Bashor, Rosevelyn Brooks - Rosevelyn (Brooks) Bashor was born August 15, 1924 at New Market, Iowa to James and Inez (Arthur) Brooks.
Rosevelyn graduated from New Market High School in 1942. She was united in marriage May 24, 1942 to Dalphon Bashor. The couple have two children: Ron and Barb.
She and Dalphon enjoyed square dancing with Irvin and Wyleen Miller, and she participated in Eastern Star and was a 50 year plus member. Rosevelyn was a member of the United Methodist Church in New Market and led the singing in the Sunday School and was head of the Sunday School department for many years. She had a lovely singing voice and sang at many weddings and funerals for friends and neighbors. Pitch and bingo were her favorite games. Rosevelyn was an Avon representative for many years. She was an excellent cook, seamstress making prom dresses among other things, and a gardener having tremendous produce during the summer. She was a typical housewife in all respects. She and Dalphon were married 50 years when he passed away in January 2003. Dalphon served in the United States Army and when he was transferred she would follow. Their travels included Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, and Colorado. The Bashors and the Eldon Fine family enjoyed camping and the kids were especially close considering them family. The New Market graduating class remained close and the ladies would go shopping once a month together.
Rosevelyn passed away July 4, 2013 at Clarinda, Iowa. She was preceded in death by husband Dalphon; her parents; parents-in-law Arnold and Mae Bashor; sisters-in-law Shirley Brooks and Beverly Bashor; brothers-in-law Donald Bashor and Dick Graham; and great grandson Nicholas Otte.
She is survived by her children Ron and Edie Bashor of Tucson, Arizona, and Barb and Doyle Otte of Clarinda; brother, Bud Brooks Sierra Vista, Arizona; grandchildren Misty, Krissy, Luke and Chad; sister-in-law Dorlene Graham of New Market, Iowa, Helen Herzberg and husband Ben of Creston, Iowa and Maxine Bashor of Corning, Iowa; brother-in-law Charles Bashor of Clarinda; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2013 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda, with Rev. Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market. Brandon, Raymond Thomas - Graveside services for Raymond Brandon, age 86, of Bedford, who died Monday, May 27, 2013 at Creighton University Medical Center will be held Friday, May 31, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the Bedford City Cemetery.

Raymond Thomas Brandon was born October 28, 1926 in Lamar, Missouri; he was the son of Daniel and Rachel (Allen) Brandon. Raymond met Bonnie Chaney and on June 18, 1955 they were united in marriage. Raymond worked multiple places in his lifetime as a laborer but enjoyed scraping iron the most. Raymond lived in Burlington Junction, Missouri most of his life until he moved to Gravity, Iowa n 1979. He then moved to Lenox in the early 1990s and then moving into the Lenox Care Center in November of 2004. Raymond finally moved into the Bedford Nursing and Rehab in January of 2010. Raymond was an avid fisherman who loved being outdoors. He also enjoyed drinking in his younger years, hunting, laughing, and most of all, spending time with his family.

Burks, Betty L. Hendrickson - Betty L. Burks of Chandler, Arizona died peacefully Sunday May 12, 2013, at Friendship Village, Tempe, Arizona after a two year battle with cancer, having lived in her home all but the last week of her life.
Betty was born in Hepburn, Iowa on July 14, 1930 the daughter of Elmer and Ebba (Bengsten) Hendrickson. When Betty was six years old her family moved to Essex, Iowa where she finished her education. She later married Donald D Clarke of Red Oak, Iowa. After their divorce she married Edward E. (Gene) Burks of Bedford, Iowa where they raised three children; Chris, Dee and Doug.
While in Bedford, Gene and Betty enjoyed playing golf, managing the Lake of Three Fires and raising their children. In 1990 Gene and Betty retired to Chandler, Arizona where they maintained an active life style and resided until their passing.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, H. Burroughs, Glen Roger - Celebration of Life Services for Glen Burroughs, age 93 of Bedford, who passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa were held Monday, September 23, 2013, at 11:00 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation were held Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM with the family greeting friends. Interment were held in the Washington Cemetery in Gravity.
Glen Roger Burroughs was born February 14, 1920, in Nodaway, Iowa the youngest son of Jefferson and Lillian (Gathman) Burroughs. He had one brother, Ralph who died when he was 2 years old, and two sisters Leona and a Marjorie. Glen grew up attending school in the Nodaway and Villisaca areas, graduating with the Class of 1939 from Stanton High School. After high school, Glen went into the construction business, working for Lof Construction Company in Omaha, Nebraska. They built the Stanton Lutheran Memorial Church and another church in Omaha. He did roofing at Offutt Air Force Base and then moved to Parsons, Kansas where he did the underground sewer work for an army base.
In 1942, Glen answered the call to serve his country, being drafted into World War II where he served the United States Army. He served Basic Training in California, and then moved to Camp Butner in North Carolina where he trained recruits. Glen then went overseas where he trained to shoot the 90 mm cannon/gun, because of his extreme accuracy to hit targets and ability to train others, Glen was awarded the Bronze Star. After Camp Butner, Glen was stationed in London, England and re-stationed to Germany, and was discharged in 1946, from Berlin, Germany. Glen then returned to the Clarinda area where he helped to establish the National Guard, serving an additional four years.
In 1946, he also started working at Kade Plumbing in New Market. After six months, Buss Kade passed away and the business was sold to Bedford Building Supply. Glen continued working for them for 19 years. In 1967, he started Burroughs Plumbing & Heating in Bedford. Glen nearly worked in every home in Taylor County. It has been said, he could draw you a map of every underground pipeline in Bedford! Glen's specialty was hand making the duct work for furnace and air conditioning systems. It was nothing for Glen to be working on Christmas Eve or Thanksgiving morning, as he never wanted anyone to be cold! In 1996, he sold the business and continued working until 2003, when he fully retired.
One day, Glen was putting in a bathroom in a house just north of Bedford, owned by Fred & Bertha Goudie when he noticed their granddaughter, Beverly Ann Goudie. On June 8, 1952, the couple was united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Bedford. To this loving union, one son, Jeffrey Dean was born to bless their lives. Glen and Beverly were married 61 years. They enjoyed playing cards with friends, getting together with family, and listening and dancing to Jeff's music. They were also fortunate to spend time traveling to such places as Africa, Spain, Jamaica and throughout the United States.
One of Glen's joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren, Joe and Sara. He felt fortunate to see them grow into young adults. He was very proud of them and loved them very much! Glen was able to attend all of Sara's 15 dance recitals and Joe's wedding last fall. Glen faithfully served the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department; was a member of the John F. Hardin American Legion; and Bedford Country Club where he served as President.
Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather is his loving wife Beverly Burroughs of Bedford; his son, Jeff Burroughs and wife Jane; grandson Joe Burroughs and wife Bernadette and granddaughter Sara Burroughs, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; also left to cherish Glen's memory is a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Campbell, Mildred "Marie" Weaver - Marie Campbell was born Mildred Marie Weaver on March 3, 1925 in Blockton, Ia. Her parents were Raymond Weaver and Dicey Fern (Golliday) Weaver, lifetime residents of Iowa. Marie remembered loving moments spent with her mother, but sadly she was only six when her mother died. There was great sadness and confusion at the time of this untimely death and as the family struggled to reorganize Marie and her two younger siblings went to live with their father's parents. Iona, Marie's older sister lived with her mother's family. When Raymond remarried Marie, her brother Duane, and sister Thelma returned to live in the home of their father and step-mother Joyce.
Marie was a good and energetic student and enjoyed school in the Works one-room school house. She skipped a grade before transferring on to the Blockton School where she completed high school at the age of 16. After school she worked as a child caretaker in the home of relatives. She and Paul Campbell eloped during the next year with the assistance of Paul's sister, Nina Poore and her husband Guy. Paul would soon be serving in the Army as the country was in the midst of WWII.
Marie and Paul had two children, Paulette Kay and Stephen Ray. Marie was happy being a homemaker and was known for her immaculate housekeeping. She was talented at cross stitching and loved taking family pictures and organizing albums. She enjoyed traveling throughout the states and always liked just getting into the car and riding around the local area with Paul. Music always provided fun for listening and dancing, which she always enjoyed. She loved watching people as they did the activities they enjoyed, which made her the perfect support mother/spectator at ballgames, band activities, etc. She was always a loving caretaker of her family throughout her life. She valued highly her friendships and relationships with her parents, grandparents, siblings, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Four siblings are now deceased; Iona Force, Duane Weaver, Donald Dean (Buck) Weaver and Faye Weidler. Surviving family are siblings; Thelma Johnson, Fern Leight, and Mary Hildreth, Sisters-in-law; Virginia Weaver, Mary Weaver, Nina Poore and Brother-in-law Ola (Grace) Campbell. Other surviving family members are her two children, Paulette Clem and Stephen Campbell; four grandchildren, Ann (Tony) Vodacek, Christopher (Jennifer) Campbell, Jeanette (Jay) Brandnor, Douglas (Jenni) Campbell; seven great-grandchildren, Kayla, Mason, Gemma Marie, Trent, Cordelia, Samson and Canaan and two step-great-grandchildren, Dylan and Keatyn, in addition to many nieces, nephews, and their families. She enjoyed keeping up to date with all the extended family and friends.
Her beloved husband of 71 years, Paul, resides in Mount Ayr Health Care Center.

Churchill, Glen "Billy" - Graveside Services for Glen "Billy" Churchill, age 87 of Bedford, who passed away Thursday, October 11, 2013, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska will be held Sunday, October 13, 2013, at 2:30 PM at the Washington Cemetery in Gravity, Iowa. Glen "Billy" Churchill was born on May 16, 1926, in Gravity, Iowa to Clarence Cecil Churchill and Nora Ellen (Garrett) Churchill. Billy grew up attending school in Gravity, graduating with the Class of 1944 from Gravity High School. After high school, Billy worked for a bread and cake distributer out of Corning, Iowa called Omar. A job which required him to go home to home through the country side selling items right from the truck.

On November 4, 1948 he was united into marriage with the love of his life, Florine Dougherty, in Bentonville, Arkansas. They lived in Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska before the love of the soil and family brought them back to Taylor County in 1952. Three boys were born to this blessed union, Larry, Monte and Craig.

Billy had a deep passion for farming and always enjoyed the outdoors. Whether he was feeding his hogs, camping, or fishing with the grandkids, he had a great love for nature and all it provided. He enjoyed camping with his family and showing them the beauties that Mother Nature provides. Even as Billy lost his eyesight, in later years, giving up the farm and being outdoors was difficult. He once stated, "I'd still be on the farm and working if I could still see."

Through the years Billy enjoyed drinking coffee with his buddies in Bedford and Gravity and in his younger years he and Florine enjoyed going to dances. Mercy, mercy, mercy, Billy did like a good party!

He is preceded in death by his parents and in-laws; son Larry Churchill; sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Henry Ronnau; and grandson Zach Churchill.

Clayton, Donald Eugene - Graveside services for Donald Clayton, age 87, of New Market, Iowa, who entered into peace October 30, 2013 at Goldenrod Manor , Clarinda, Iowa, will be held 12:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa with Reverend Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Donald Eugene Clayton was born May 22, 1926 and he died October 30, 2013. His parents were Floyd and Vera (Woldruff) Clayton of New Market, Iowa. Donald was born at Siam, Iowa; he attended grade school at Siam and graduated from New Market Iowa High School. He entered the United States Navy in May 1944 and served in World War II aboard the air craft carrier USS Commencement Bay. Don graduated from Clarinda Community College and also graduated from the Iowa State Patrol. He worked in law enforcement with Iowa State Patrol for two years. He then worked in the insurance business; Don was Vice President and Manager of American Mutual and Midwest American Mutual Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa. Later Don managed the Reliance Insurance Company, Crop Hail Office in Omaha, Nebraska. Following that, he worked for Old Republic Insurance Company of Chicago, Illinois for ten years. He then returned to the Clayton farm near New Market, Iowa and resided with his mother until she went to the nursing home. Don continued farming and retired from the insurance business in 1988. He enjoyed raising and feeding cattle and taking care of his pets.

Don was a fifty year member of the Masons, fifty year member of Scottish Rite Free Masons of Des Moines, fifty year member of Za Ga Zig Shrine of Altoona, Iowa and life time member of Shrine’s Children Hospital of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a member of the New Market American Legion and a member of the New Market Methodist Church.

Cochran, Ruth Eveline Laube - Celebration of Life Services for Ruth Cochran, age 70, of Lenox, who died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston will be held Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. Ruth Eveline (Laube) Cochran was born September 6, 1942, in Jefferson, Iowa the daughter of William Laube and Lillian (Peck) Laube. Ruth grew up in attending school in the Boone and Ogden, Iowa areas, graduating in 1961. On October 28, 1961, she was united in marriage to Robert Cochran in Marshalltown, Iowa. To this loving union, two children, Clifford and Lillian, were born to bless their lives.

Ruth and Robert farmed in the Zearing community for seven years, moving to Lenox in 1970 where they farmed southwest of town. Ruth home schooled her children and worked as a cook in Lenox and Clarinda, and later at Walmart. She was also trained as a Reflexologist, where she cared for her clients for over 16 years. Ruth and Robert continued to live on the farm up until her death.

Ruth enjoyed gardening, raising produce and flowers. She had beautiful peonies, roses and bridal wreaths. She was also an excellent baker, with pies being her specialty. Ruth and Robert answered an ad to plant trees for the Kingston Forestry in the southern United States. The family would move to the southern states for 3 months during the winter. They enjoyed this career and lifestyle for 4 years.

Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother is her loving husband of 52 years, Robert Cochran of Lenox; a son, Clifford Cochran of Lenox; a daughter, Lillian Robertson and husband David of Diagonal; a brother, Mark Laube of Franklin, Ohio; a sister, Mary Teig and husband Ray of Highlandville, Missouri; four grandchildren, Robbie, Jolene, Jenna and Jessica; along with many other family members and friends.

Cox, Clifford "Joe" - Clifford "Joe" Cox, 79, of Lincoln, died March 2, 2013. He was born February 3, 1934 in Blockton, IA, to John and Millie (Brown) Cox.   
Clifford was a VP of underwriting for Woodmen Insurance Company for many years, and was on the board of directors for the Fall Creek Home Owners Association in Branson, MO. He loved to fish, shoot skeet, and travel, along with meeting and talking to anybody he met.
He is survived by wife, Delores; daughters, Sheri (Jason) Butler, and Lori Weakland; grandchildren, Erika and Nicolas Francisco, and Kelcy Weakland; great-grandchild, Carter Weakland; along with several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, 4 brothers, 2 sisters.
Funeral Services were held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, March 6,2013 at Roper and Sons Funeral Home, Pastor Kerry O'Bryant officiating. Burial at Wyuka Cemetery. Cozad, Inez Ione Mattly - Inez lone Cozad, 66, Clear Lake, formerly of Bedford, Iowa, died Friday, July 26, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
A celebration of Inez's life will be held at a later date.
Inez lone Cozad was born on May 20,1947, in Hancock, Iowa, the daughter of Archie Leland and Florence Ida (Snyder) Mattly. Inez attended school in Clarinda, Iowa, graduating from Clarinda High School. She also graduated from the school of cosmetology in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Richard Cozad in 1972, and to this marriage two children were born, Richie and Corbie Ann Cozad. Richard preceded her in death. The family resided in Bedford, Iowa, where she worked as a cosmetologist until 1989, when she became an EMT in Bedford, and continued in this profession at Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa, until 2005, when she had to retire due to ill health.
Inez enjoyed painting pictures, being a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, knitting, and crocheting.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Richie Cozad of Des Moines, and Corbie Arm Cozad and fiance, Joe Kloster of Clear Lake; her brothers, Leroy (Lorena) Mattly of Endicott, WA, Dewey (Judy) Mattly of Loveland, CO, and Bob (Nancy) Mattly of Omaha, NE; her sisters, Donna Cole of Macedonia, Iowa, and Marylou (Kenny) Gibbins of Shirley, Ark; several nieces, nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

Cross, Margaret "Darlene" Holker - Margaret “Darlene” Cross was born March 24, 1925 to Henry Joseph and Pearl (Wilson) Holker on a farm north of Bedford. The family later moved to the Siam area where she attended grade school and later high school in Bedford.
On March 9, 1941 she was united in marriage to William James Cross and this union was blessed two children: Carolyn Caye and Richard James.
Darlene worked through the years at Cobb’s Ice Cream, Aren’s Drug Store, Thompson’s Mercantile, O’Bryan Brothers and in 1971, opened a Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio and operated it for 25 years.
Bill and Darlene spent 32 years wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona where they made many friends from across the United States and Canada. She was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed playing cards, golf, doing ceramics, teaching many of the youth in Bedford, bowling, knitting Christmas stockings and quilting. Darlene passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center with her son and his wife by her side. She was preceded in by her parents; husband Bill of 69 years; daughter Caye; siblings: Doyle, Carol Ann and Lola; brothers-in-law: Vernon Johnston and Bob Holdren and niece Janice Thill.

Daise, Shirley Jean Gooden - Shirley Jean Daise, passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, at Golden Living Center, Maryville, Mo. Shirley was born in Bedford to Ira and Myrtle Addams Gooden on April 1, 1929. She was the 10th child in the family. All of her siblings are deceased.
Shirley is survived by her four children: Debbie Daise, Dallas, Texas, David Daise (Linda Kolega), St. Joseph, Mo., Sandra (John) Desch, Rock Hill, S.C., and Linda (Mickie) Pruitt, Elmo, Mo. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 13 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
After attending high school in Clarinda, she married Bob Daise divorcing after 21 years. Shirley moved from Clearmont, Mo., to El Cajan, Calif., in 1974 and returned to Missouri six years ago to be closer to family. She worked at the Clarinda Mental Health Hospital for several years and was also a nurse’s aide at Grossmont Hospital in California until her retirement in 1988. She was also actively involved in the Sonrise Church in Santee, Calif.
The family received friends from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda. The memorial service began immediately following the visitation.

Daly, Loren Edward - Loren Edward Daly, son of Clarence E. and Rosa Lee (Yowell) Daly was born in Decatur County, near Lamoni on Feb. 7, 1924 and departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 at his home in New Market at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 6 days.
Loren grew up in the rural Lamoni and Kellerton area where he attended and graduated from 8th grade at the Modoc School in Riley Township. He was united in marriage to Erma June Troxel on July 9, 1943 in Bethany, Missouri. To this union three children were born; twins, Marilyn Rae and Carolyn Kay, and Loren, Jr.
In 1949 Loren moved his family to Ottumwa where he enrolled into Midwest School of Evangelism to prepare for the ministry. While attending school they ministered to a rural church in Riley Township in the area that Loren grew up in, known as Mt. Zion Church. In 1953 they moved to Angus, Neb. where they served the Church of Christ. They spent several years in Nebraska churches in Harvard, Trumbull, Deweese, Superior as well as Angus. While ministering to these churches Loren also worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings, Neb., the Mullet Hardware, Furniture and Funeral Home in Superior, Neb. and for Abbotts Dairy of Superior, Neb.
In 1966 they moved to Sidney where they served the Church of Christ at Sidney and Riverton. In 1969 they moved to New Market where they served the New Market and Siam Church of Christ. In 1978 their ministry ended with the New Market Church but their ministry was continued at Siam until Aug. 2012. From Oct. 1978 until he retired in 1987, Loren worked for NSK Bearing Corporation. Loren also served as the New Market Mayor for eight years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Erma in 2007; his daughter, Carolyn; two brothers, Chauncey and Lyle; and three sisters, Madeline, Arleta and Irene.
Survivors include his children, Marilyn Brennfoerder and her husband Gary of Edgar, Neb., Loren Edawrd Daly, Jr. and his wife Beth of New Market; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a brother, Rollin Daly and his wife Dorothy of Osceola; a step sister, Rosalie Price of Lincoln, Neb.; along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Minor Pavilion in New Market with Rev. Russ Clark officiating. Burial was in the Dallas Center Cemetery near New Market. Visitation with the family present was held on Friday evening, Nov. 15 from 5-7 p.m. at the Siam Church of Christ. Davidson, Arthur "Verne" ,78, of Atlantic. Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the Cass County Me­morial Hospital in Atlantic.
Verne was born March 15, 1934, east of Bedford, Iowa, to Court Boyd and Bethel Mary (Bradley) Davidson, on the family farm. He attended country school and graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1953. In March of 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for 2 years at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, as a radar specialist. On December 28, 1958, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Pearson at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita, Iowa.
In March of 1960 Verne and Rosemary moved to a farm located west of Cumberland where he farmed and shelled corn. In 1975 Verne began working at Dahl Air Conditioning and Heating in Van Meter. Iowa. He suffered a stroke in September of 1979 which left him disabled and forced him to retire.
Verne was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Wiota since 1960. He and Rosemary belonged to the Circle 71 Square Dance Club. Verne was also a member of the Elm Park Pinochle Club.
He was a good neighbor and always willing to help everyone. Verne enjoyed boating and camping trips with cousins' at Lake Okoboji. In December 2007, Verne became a resident at Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa. One of the things he enjoyed was riding his scooter around Atlantic. Verne loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Another joy of his was having his favorite cat. Ramona, sit on his lap.
Surviving Verne are his wife, Rosemary, of 54 years, of Atlantic, Iowa; his sons, Reverend Ken (Alice) Davidson of Atlantic and Roger (Phuong) Davidson of New Albany, Ohio; his grandchildren, Justin, Jeannie, Jessica, Elizabeth, Matthew and Timothy, all of Atlantic; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Wright; brother-in-law, Clifford Fries of Anita; aunt, Sadie Wesack of Adair; several nieces, cousins and many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents: his brother-in-law, John Pearson: and sister-in-law. Barbara Fries.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 14,2013. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Wiota, Iowa. Davies, Alice Jean Beattie Wardlow - Alice Jean Wardlow-Davies, daughter of John Leonard and Audrey Mae (Maples) Beattie, was born on April 9, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri. Alice entered eternal rest on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of sixty-two years, three months and six days.

Alice lived in Maryville, Missouri prior to moving to the Guss area in 1983. In 2009 Alice moved to Corning and was united in marriage to Leo Davies on October 24, 2010. The couple had been together… twenty-six years prior to his death on September 3, 2012.

Alice was a Nurse’s Aide and part of the Direct Care Staff at Midwest Opportunities in Corning, caring for the mentally and physically challenged.

Alice was a member of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church at Guss.

Marguerite Lucille Davis, age 74 of Gravity, Iowa, passed away November 22, 2013, at Jennie Edmondson Hospital after a brief illness.

Marguerite was born September 21, 1939, in Hacklebarney, Douglas Township, located in Adams County, Iowa to the late Hobert and Elizabeth (Ziehe) Briggs. She graduated from Nodaway High School in 1958 with the last graduating class from that school. She continued her education by attending cosmetology school in Council Bluffs. From there, she owned and operated her own salon in Nodaway and then later in Gravity until she retired. Marguerite's favorite pastimes included volunteering at the Clarinda Public Library, working in her gardens, exploring the family's genealogy and her pets.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester R. (Rex) Davis.
Marguerite is survived by her sister, Karen Larson of Gravity and brother, Robert Briggs of Clarinda; nieces, Cheri (Larson) Frain, Lori (Larson) Holley, Kathy (Larson) Surbeck, Brenda (Briggs) Farrens; nephews Mark Larson, Kevin Larson, Jason Briggs; one grandniece, four grand nephews; one great-grandniece, five great-grand nephews; many other family members and friends.
In lieu of cards and flowers, a memorial fund has been set up at Bank of Iowa in Clarinda. Services to celebrate the life of Marguerite will be announced at a later date.

Davis, Sandra Lee Lundy - Celebration of Life Services for Sandra Davis, age 71, of Lenox, who died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the Lenox Care Center will be held Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. Sandra Lee (Lundy) Davis was born June 16, 1942, in Greenfield, Iowa the daughter of Raymond Lundy and Harriet (Frederick) Lundy. On September 10, 1961 she was united in marriage to Roquel "Rocky" Davis of Lenox. To this loving union four children were born, son Kevin and wife Sally of Leola, South Dakota; son, Doug and wife Cindy of Fort Madison, Iowa; daughter Lisa and husband Eric of Fort Dodge, Iowa and a daughter, Traci and husband Pete Nelson of Corning, Iowa.

Also surviving Sandy is her sister, Patricia and husband Dale Walker of Fontanelle, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Rachel (Ryan), Sara (Toby), and Shane Davis of Leola, South Dakota; Brittnee (Justin) Jameson and Nick (Nikki) Samuelson of Fort Dodge, IA; Brandon Clayton of Des Moines, Iowa; Jentri (Josh) Clayton of DeSoto, Iowa and Dustin Clayton of Corning, Iowa and one great-grandchild, Keaton Clayton of Lenox, Iowa.

Sandy's greatest passion in life was her family and spending time with them. In the summertime, you could always catch her in her garden and flowerbeds. She loved country living and being outside as much as possible. She also got lots of joy from helping others and enjoyed her many years employed as a CNA with the Greenfield Manor, Lenox Care Center and later Taylor Ridge Estates. Her constant smile and lively personality were her greatest assets while also working at the Applebarn and Dally Post. Sandy was 'one of a kind' and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Dorl, Charles Edwin Sr - Charles Edwin Dorl, Sr., son of Wilson Charles and Beulah (Nelson) Dorl was born on September 3, 1936 in New Market, Iowa. Charles entered into eternal peace on December 4, 2013 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

Charles grew up in the community of New Market. He graduated from New Market Community School with the Class of 1954. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country with pride until 1966. Following his discharge he worked for the University of Nebraska in Omaha for a year, after that he working for the Veterans Administration in Lincoln for 5 years.

Charles retired from the VA on disability in September of 1982; he then went to work for the Bent County Sheriffs Department as a deputy sheriff. He worked there for three years before taking a job with the Douglas County Corrections Department. He also worked for Ralph Kohler as a guide for geese and duck hunters in Tekamah, Nebraska.

On December 13, 2008 he was united in marriage to Shirley Racine at the Norwich United Methodist Church. Some of his hobbies included duck hunting, fishing, gardening, planting flowers, bowling, cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and going to the casino.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents: Wilson and Jean Dorl and Beulah and Joe Kelly; sister Carolyn Owens; sons Carl, John and Roger Dorl and grandson Austin Winters.

Richard Lee Dougherty was born June 7, 1934, the son of John Dougherty and Mildred (Chambers) Dougherty. He had an older brother Duane and a younger brother Glen. He grew up in the Omaha Louisville area, graduating from Westside High School with the Class of 1952. He then trucked and sold hay and also farmed. He met Annette Goeken at a dance and on April 23, 1955, the couple were united in marriage. Together they were blessed with 58 wonderful years together. From this loving union, two daughters were born, Cheryl and Cathy. Later came two granddaughters, Noelle and Nicole plus one great-grandson, Laytyn and two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Channing all to bless their lives.

Richard and Annette farmed in the Omaha/Bennington, Nebraska areas then moved to Iowa and farmed in the Corning/Prescott and Lenox areas. Richard suffered a heart attack in 1977, and was forced to give up hog farming, however, he owned his own semi tractor-trailer, which he drove for 20 years, retiring in 2009. He always enjoyed his hog and farming business.

He enjoyed going to flea markets and he and Annette often attended square dances in the area when they were younger. He also loved horses and was a member of the Omaha Saddle Club. His family was his pride and joy and he looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend is his loving wife Annette Dougherty of Lenox; his two daughters, Cheryl Ramsbottom and husband Richard of Springfield, Missouri; and Cathy Rutz and husband Dave of Lincoln, Nebraska; two granddaughters, Noelle Parrish and husband Dirk of Lenox; and Nicole Cunningham and husband Jesse of Lincoln, Nebraska; three great-grandchildren, Laytyn, Olivia and Channing; a brother, Duane Dougherty of the Lenox/Glenwood, Iowa area; along with many other family members and friends.

Doyle Linden Dunkin, age 90, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2013. He was born February 21, 1923 on a farm near Gravity, Iowa to Carl Emanuel and Bina Feme (Akers) Dunkin, both deceased. Doyle is survived by his wife of 25 years, Virginia; two sisters, Jean Marie Roeder of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Lois D. Novak of Houston, Texas; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Doyle was a WWII veteran of the Army where he received a Purple Heart. He was active with the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite for over 61 years. Doyle was also a life time member of the VFW, American Legion, D.A.V. and other Veteran groups. He worked 31 years as a Civil Engineer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Transportation. Doyle retired in 1975 and enjoyed the many associates and friends he came to know all across the United States.

Eberly, John Leroy - John Leroy Eberly was born to Ray Martin and Onieda Bell (Beery) Eberly on April 10, 1933 in Taylor County, Iowa. He served his country as a soldier with the United States Army serving during the Korean War.

He married Helen Hewitt-Hanson on May 24, 1975 at the Kuntz Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska.

Leroy worked for the City of Villisca for 15 years and for Montgomery County for another 15 years. He retired from Eaton’s after 15 years as a forklift operator in the Transmission Division. He enjoyed watching old western movies and was an avid John Deere collector.

Leroy was a lifelong resident of Villisca and a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran church there.

Leroy passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the age of 80 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Society. He is preceded in death by his parents Ray and Onieda; first wife Ruth, wife Helen; daughters: Denise Diane and Dixie Lynne; son Kenneth Otis Frese; step daughter Judy Hanson; brother-in-law Darwin Snyder.

David Allan Eighmy, 58, of New Market passed away Saturday, Sept. 21 at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Clarinda on May 12, 1955 to Larry and Lorraine (Wells) Eighmy. Words are inadequate to express the joy of his arrival by his parents as well as extended family. He grew up in the New Market area and graduated from New Market High School and attended Iowa Western College, Clarinda. Dave was united in marriage on Dec. 3, 1982 to Maggie Hatch.
Dave enjoyed farming in the New Market/Siam area. He was employed at Clarinda Mental Health for seventeen years and was later employed by Orr Trucking for almost twenty years. Dave had a quick wit and a very dry sense of humor. He will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtfulness of others. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and was musically inclined; playing the Saxophone, piano and organ.
Dave is preceded in death by his father, Larry Eighmy.

Gold, Billy Duane - Billy Duane Gold was born March 4, 1929 at Bedford, Iowa to Cleo Clyde and Nellie B. (Munn) Gold. He graduated Bedford High School and served his country in the National Guard. He met Mary Ann Elliott and they were married November 12, 1948 at Bentonville, Arkansas. Bill and Mary Ann were married for 59 years until her death in 2008. To this union two children were born: Danny and Mickey.
Bill worked for Iowa Power in the 50’s and the 60’s. His hobbies and activities included square dance calling for many years, an auctioneer and he held his own monthly auction in Hamburg, and became a pilot in 1969. Bill and Mary Ann moved to Clarinda in 1974 and he began his own electrical and plumbing business called Gold Home Center which he worked at until his retirement. Following retirement he remained active in home appliances buying, repairing and selling them from his shop in Shambaugh.
Bill entered into rest Monday, October 21, 2013 at University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann; parents; and sister Arleta Roberts and her husband Don.
Surviving are his children: son Dan Gold and wife Barbara of Carroll, IA, and daughter Mickey Nook and husband Rick of Shenandoah, IA; brother Jack Gold and wife Norma of Bedford, IA; grandchildren Corey Nook and his wife Meadow, Matthew Nook and his wife Amy, Christopher Gold, Jennifer Moberg and her husband Eric, Brandon Gold; and nine great grandchildren.

Mary Harris was born June 8, 1922 at Hartley, Iowa to Peter Graff and Anna (Poos) Graff. She graduated from Akron High School, Akron, Iowa on May 23, 1940. She graduated from Mercy College of Nursing, Sioux City, Iowa with an R.N. degree in 1944. Mary and Lyle Harris were united in marriage March 25, 1946 at Hiawatha, Kansas. After her marriage to Lyle they lived on the family farm north of New Market for over 50 years. They were blessed with three sons, Thomas, Stephen and Roger.

Mary's passion was her family. Her parents emigrated from Europe instilling a strong work ethic and the importance of family, which she continued through her life. As a farm wife she gardened, raised chickens, sold eggs, milked a cow, and enjoyed her flowers. She did all these things while working full time.

When her boys were young she had time to take them fishing and welcomed their friends into their home. As the grandkids came along Grandma loved to hear about their activities and lives. Summer time fun abounded when the grandkids from Washington came to visit. Her door was always open and she always had time to play. In later years she loved seeing her great grandchildren, watching them grow and change. She always called them her "greats."

Mary was a Registered Nurse who began her career at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital in 1944. She came to Clarinda along with 4 other young nurses from Sioux City. In the early years of her career she did private nursing and went along with patients to the city. She was the "Charge Nurse" on the 2nd floor and cared for many people over her 40 plus years at the hospital.

Mary enjoyed life to its fullest and was always ready for a fun time. She loved cooking for her family, friends and anyone who stopped by. The coffee pot was always on and salesmen used to make it a point to stop by around lunch for her wonderful meals. She will especially be remembered for her fried chicken, noodles, dilly bread and cinnamon rolls. She loved to try new recipes out of her many cookbooks. Mary belonged to several clubs, always enjoying the dominos, cards, and visiting. She was also a 50 plus year member of Eastern Star and the New Market United Methodist Church.

Hawkins, Laverta Ethel Gray - Laverta Ethel Hawkins, daughter of James Walter Gray and Ethel Swaim Gray was born on November 19, 1918 in Taylor County Iowa and passed from this life on November 15, 2013 at Parkdale Care Center in Maryville Missouri, four days before her 95th birthday.
She graduated from Hopkins High School in 1937 and married Frank Oren Riley on May 22, 1937 in Grant City, Missouri. To this union three sons were born: Maurice Dean, Larry Gene and Frank Walter Riley.
Her first husband Frank, was killed on March 26, 1943 in a truck accident in Oregon. Laverta returned to Hopkins, Missouri. On January 20, 1945 she married Milo Wilson. Together they operated the Wilson Supply Store and the Wilson Grocery Store in Hopkins, Missouri for many years. Milo passed away in January, 1975. She married James Hawkins in Mesa, Arizona on January 26, 1980. They enjoyed traveling, living in Arizona in the winter months and spending time with friends and relatives. Laverta was a fifty year member of the Order of Eastern Star and held several offices over the years. In addition, she was a Worthy Advisor for the Rainbow girls. She was a member of the Hopkins Christian Church.
Laverta was raised during the Great Depression and was the oldest of five daughters. She learned to work hard with her dad. She kept the same work ethic her entire life and instilled the same in her sons. Laverta faced many obstacles in her lifetime. She was widowed at the age of 24 with two young sons and expecting a third one. In 1975 she was again widowed and left with a business to run.
Those relatives who preceded Laverta in death were her parents, husbands: Frank Riley, Milo Wilson and Jim Hawkins, brother John Harvey Gray, sisters Irma Gill, Marcella O'Brien, Emily Arieta Gordon and Irene Schwindt, her brothers-in-law, step-daughter Linda (Hawkins) Villar, granddaughter Lisa (Riley) Willey and great-grandson Phillip Landess.
She leaves to cherish her memory sons Maurice (wife Donna) Riley, Hopkins, Missouri, Larry (wife Barbara) Riley, Greenfield, Iowa and Frank (wife Dianne) Riley, Osceola, Iowa, step-son Duane (wife Beverly) Wilson, Winnemucca, Nevada and cousin Theda Bennett, Sun City Center, Florida. In addition, she is survived by 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. She enjoyed spending time with her family. They were the love of her life.
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 23, 2013, at 10:30 am at the Hopkins, Missouri First Christian Church

Claire Ilene Hendrix went to be with our Heavenly Father on July 25, 2013.  

On March 9, 1919 Ilene was born to Raymond and Verna (Houck) Johnson in Bedford, Iowa. She married Harold Hendrix on Dec. 9, 1939, and had nine children. He passed away in 1985.  

She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, James; one grandchild; two great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; her brother, Eugene Johnson, and her sister, Annabelle Lucas.  

Survivors include her children, Carrol Bruntmyer and Helen Runnels of Mound City, Bonnie Crum (Don) of Clarinda, Iowa, Karen Sipes of St. Joseph, Missouri, Larry (Denise) Hendrix of Maryville, Missouri, Sandy Cochran of Maryville, Richard (Betty) Hendrix of Fairfax, Missouri, and Joyce (Randy) Young of Lubbock, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.  

Ilene was a resident of Tiffany Care Center in Mound City for seven years. She enjoyed life and family. 

Services will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 10:30 am at the Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City. Family visitation will be Sunday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, also at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Maitland Cemetery

Hensley, Gretchen Timberlake - Celebration of Life Services for Gretchen Hensley, age 81, of Humeston, formerly of Bedford, who died Thursday, June 6, 2013 in Des Moines, Iowa were held Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation with the family greeting friends was Tuesday from 1:00 PM until service time. A private family inurnment at Graceland Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Gretchen Timberlake Hensley was born on January 8, 1932 in Maryville, Missouri at Saint Francis Hospital. Her parents were Verne and Helen (Keith) Timberlake of Bedford. She attended the Timberlake School, a one room country school, the first eight years of her formal education and high school in Bedford to graduate with the class of 1949.
In 1950 she was united in marriage to Dean Hensley and on September 26, 1956 their son, Thomas Mark was born.
Gretchen worked at as a secretary for many years at Farm Bureau, Lucas Products, and Head Start just to name a few. Later she attended Iowa Western Community College at Clarinda and completed the LPN course. She spent the next few years working in care centers and private care as an LPN.
Caring for people was not Gretchen's only passion. She also loved animals, especially dogs and cats. Over the years she raised and cared for many of the little critters.
In recent times failing health brought her to Humeston to live with her son Tom. She enjoyed the time she was able to spend with him.
She is survived by her son, Tom, grand-daughter Amanda Ann. She also has two great grandsons, Carter and Chase. Survivors also include sister, Ann Robinson and husband Ray along with many other family and friends.
Gretchen will be missed dearly by those that knew and loved her

Hiatt, Delores May Wilson - Delores May (Wilson) Hiatt was born to Vernon and Opal (Heatherington) Wilson on May 8, 1925 on a farm near Villisca. She spent most of her childhood on farmsteads in Taylor County, attending rural schools and Gravity High School. Delores met and married William Lyle “Johnny” Hiatt on November 9, 1940. To this union eight children were born. Delores was a member of the Hazel Doll Club and the Maple Grove United Methodist Church in Guss. She was also a 47 year member with the Gravity Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Church of Christ in New Market. Delores loved her family birthday gatherings, picnics, square dancing, playing board games and cards. She also enjoyed gardening and flowers along with feeding and watching a variety of birds from her deck. She would also watch all the different species of wild life and track the progress of the livestock. But most of all, Delores cherished her dogs Star and (Cute) Scoot-- her furry kids. Delores was a gentle giant and the mainstay of her family. She had a heart of gold and a spirit of a lioness. She passed away Sunday, August 11, 2013, at her residence in Gravity. Delores is preceded in death by her husband Johnny; son Francis; sisters: Erma and Edna; brother Harold; grandson Timothy Wayne Hiatt; and great grandson Eathon Wyatt O’Connor.
Delores will be greatly missed by her surviving family including children: Vernon Hiatt and wife Gladius of New Market, Carroll Hiatt and wife Marilyn of Bedford, Harrell Hiatt and wife Margaret of Casper, WY, Gailen Hiatt and wife Sharlene of Cotopaxi, CO, Joyce Zurmuehlen and husband Jim of Gravity, Larry Hiatt and wife Teresa of New Market, Laura Johnson and husband Gail of Corning; 17 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister Wilma Richardson and husband Terry of Des Moines; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Johnny and Delores are probably on a pond bank fishing, square dancing or planning the next family picnic.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda, with Reverend Lowell Schaaf officiating. Interment at Tabor Cemetery, Tabor, Iowa. Hullinger, Virginia Jean Thompson - Virginia Jean (Thompson) Hullinger, 77, of Glendale, Arizona, entered into God’s presence on May 25, 2013. Virginia was born near New Market, Iowa on July 28, 1935. She was raised on a farm there and North Star Grade School on land donated by the Kelso family.
On December 23, 1954, she married her sweetheart Donald Hullinger after he was discharged from the Navy, and supported him through Pharmacy School at the University of Iowa, where he attended and they lived.
In 1959, she and Donald moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they eventually purchased Grunow Pharmacy on McDowell Road, and she supported the administrative and accounting side of the business. Virginia was also a homemaker and very involved with the First (North Hills) Church of God. Virginia moved to Kennewick, Washington in 2010 in order to be close to her two daughters and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Mary Ethel (Kelso) Thompson, brother Darrell, sister Rosalie Thompson Gray, niece Joleen Hardee, and husband of 51 years, Donald.
Virginia is survived by sister Doris (Emory) Hardee of Bedford, Iowa, brother Max (Wyleen) of Mountain Home, Arkansas, four children Pamela (Jeff) Wheatley of Pasco, Washington, Marcia (John) Deffenbaugh of Kennewick, Washington, Robert of Phoenix, Arizona, and Rodney (Laura) of Englewood, Colorado, 12 grandchildren-Shawn, Ryan and Brooke Wheatley, Ashley (JR) Aytch, John Olin and Megan Deffenbaugh, Andra and Madisen Hullinger, Gavin Griffey, Bradley, Taylor and Jordan Hullinger, 4 great grandchildren-Ethan, Anna and Kyle Wheatley and Trey Aytch, Lisa Hullinger and numerous extended family and friends.
A special thanks is given to those who have supported the family with calls, letters, and prayers, along with the caregivers, Visiting Angels, Kennewick Life Care, and also the staff of Hawthorne Court.

Husband, Alice Lucile Eden - Funeral services for Alice Husband, age 93, of Bedford, who entered into peace Friday, Aug. 8 at Greater Regional Hospice, Creston, were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Siam Church of Christ with Russ Clark officiating. Alice Lucile Husband was born Jan. 10, 1920 near Hepburn to Axsel and Bertha (Whitehead) Eden. She attended Country schools in Page and Taylor counties and graduated from New Market High School with the class of 1937. Alice earned a Bachelor of Science teaching degree from Northwest Missouri State College, Maryville, MO in 1943 and was a school teacher for several years.
On Aug. 8, 1956, she married Mervin Husband and they have lived on a farm near Bedford for 57 years.
Preceding Alice in death were her parents; and a brother, Burdell Eden.

Johnson, Brice Glenn - Brice Glenn Johnson, 78, of Goodyear, AZ passed away on Saturday, June 1. He was born on June 3, 1934 on the rural Taylor County farm to Mary Melvin and LeRoy Ellis Johnson.
He graduated from Gravity High School and joined the US Army Nov. 30, 1954. He was discharged with a Medal of Good Honor on Nov. 14, 1957 and continued to serve under the Army Reserves until Nov., 29, 1962. Brice had recently been awarded the Freedom Team Salute Award from the US Army for his continued service to his county.
Upon return to the family farm he continued his education at Iowa Western Community College where he met his future bride, Carolyn Mae Pugh. They were united in marriage at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox, Iowa on June 28, 1959. They later settled on the family farm near Gravity, Iowa were they raised their family, Deborah and Brent. Along with being an farmer raising livestock and crops Brice was also very active in various community activities of which some included the Gravity Volunteer Fire Department, the Gravity Masonic Lodge (which is now part of the Bedford Masonic Lodge and from which he was awarded via the Grand Lodge of Iowa his 50 year membership), the Bedford Community School Board, Iowa Cattlemen's Association, various other community events, school and sporting events, and other various organizations. Brice and Carolyn relocated to Arizona in 1986 and enjoyed the warmth while exploring the Southwest.
Left to cherish his memory is daughter Deborah of Goodyear, son Brent (Tamara) of Spirit Lake, grandson Marcus, step-grandson Chad (Liz), sister Irene, brothers Edward and Russel, and sister-in-law Marlene, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Carolyn Mae (Struwe) Johnson, age (74) of Goodyear, Arizona died January 8, 2013. She was born May 3, 1938 in Corning, Iowa to Iva (Struwe) and Homer Pugh.
She graduated from Lenox High School, obtained her teaching certificate from Iowa Western Community College, and began her teaching career.

On June 28, 1959 she was united in marriage to Brice Glen Johnson at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox, Iowa. They settled on the Gravity family farm. Carolyn taught in the Bedford Community School District teaching at both the Gravity and the Bedford elementary schools, raised their family, and was very active in the community, school events, and various organizations. Brice and Carolyn relocated to Arizona in 1986 and enjoyed the warmth while exploring the Southwest.

Kean, Maxine Smith - Maxine Smith Kean passed away July 8, 2013 at Mt. Ayr Health Care Center in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. Maxine was visited daily by her loving brother Paul Jennings Smith, formerly of Blockton, Iowa.
Maxine Smith Kean, the oldest child of Bertha (Jennings) Smith and Samuel Jesse Smith, was born on the family farm near Blockton, Iowa, in Ringgold County, close to the Missouri border, January 24, 1920. That same family farm is where Kirk and Susie Smith, Cora and Samuel, Maxine's great-nephew and his family live today.
Maxine was a quiet studious child who loved books. She milked cows twice a day and attended Brush College, a rural school near the family farm. Maxine rode a Shetland pony to Blockton High School. After graduation when she was only 18, she began teaching at a country school near Clearfield, Iowa and then lived in a teacherage at Lamoille, Iowa where she taught. Maxine continued her education at Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Missouri where she received her Bachelor Degree and then furthered her education, receiving her Master Degree in Education from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Maxine taught elementary grades in the Des Moines Public Schools for 36 years, retiring in 1983.
Maxine was an active member of the West Des Moines Christian Church, enjoying the fellowship of the Church Ladies Organization and playing in the bell choir. She was also a member of the Polk County Historical Society, the American Association of University Women, West Des Moines Book Review Club, and was on the Program Committee for the West Des Moines AARP. Additionally, Maxine was a member of the West Des Moines Women's Club, Retired Teachers Association and Toastmasters. She was an involved member in each of her organizations.
Maxine and her husband Daniel J. Kean, loved to square dance and travel together. Their most memorable trip was to Ireland, where they traced Dan's lineage and met some of his Irish relatives.
Dan passed away in 1985. Maxine so appreciated the loving care he received from Hospice of Central Iowa that she became a dedicated Hospice volunteer, spending hours weekly, handwriting thank you notes for the many memorial contributions and donations received by Hospice of Central Iowa. In 1990 alone Maxine wrote well over 2,000 letters, each one thoughtfully and creatively handwritten. Maxine Smith Kean's involvement with Hospice came full circle when she entered Hospice care in July, 2013.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha (Jennings) and Samuel Jesse Smith, her husband Daniel J. Kean, sister Gayle Hilt, brother-in-law Edward Hilt, and niece Paula Lynette Smith.
Maxine is survived by her brother Paul Jennings Smith and wife Frances of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, niece Marcia (Smith) Allen and husband Gary of Corning, Iowa, nephew Kenneth Jay Smith and wife Linda of Independence, Missouri, great nieces, great nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, dear friends Pam and John Duesing of West Des Moines, Iowa, and numerous relatives and friends.

Services were held on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mt Ayr, Iowa with Rev Scott Marcum officiating. Burial was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to H.C.I. Care Services of Mt Ayr, Iowa.

King, Opal Darlene Hoops - Celebration of Life Services for Opal King, age 91, of Bedford, who died Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center were held Monday, September 16, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation were held Sunday afternoon from 4:00 - 6:00 with the family greeting friends. Interment were held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be given in Opal's name.

Opal Darlene (Hoops) King was born August 14, 1922, in rural Taylor County, Iowa the daughter of Ernest Hoops and Minnie May (Archer) Hoops. She grew up attending school through 10th grade. On January 20, 1938, when she was only 16, she was united in marriage to Frank King in Lenox, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple moved to Iowa City where Frank worked for Montgomery Wards. They later moved to California where he was employed by the Lockheed Aircraft Company. Frank served his country during World War II and upon his discharge, they lived between Iowa and Colorado. With Colorado being Opal's favorite place to live. In 1955, they returned to Iowa to the family farm south of Bedford. Frank and Opal were blessed with the birth of three sons, Raymond, David and Frank and one daughter, Julia.
Opal and Frank had a 5-wheel camper and they enjoyed traveling extensively after their retirement from the farm in 1989. Sometimes they traveled alone, but mostly with other family members. Opal loved to cook, garden, canning the vegetables and tending her flowers. She also enjoyed helping Frank on the farm and fishing when time allowed. She was a wonderful seamstress and did beautiful needlework. She also enjoyed playing the piano. However, Opal loved her family dearly and she truly enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Left to cherish the memories of a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend are her two sons, David King and special friend Helen Dukes, of Bedford; and Frank King and wife Judie of Clarinda; a daughter-in-law, Donna King of Arizona; a daughter, Julia King of Omaha; five grandchildren, Vicky Swaney and husband Rick; Angela King; Carl King and wife Shannon; and Ronald King and wife Rena; Kimberly Allen and husband Elvin; 15 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; along with many other family members and friends.

Ronald (Ron) Kingery was born on July 18, 1943 in Corning, Iowa to Ronald and Mildred Kingery. Most of Ron's younger years were spent in Corning where he was raised by his paternal grandparents, Chester and Grace Ann Kingery. Ron graduated from Corning High School in 1964.

Ron was married on November 11, 1969 to Norma May Miller and to this union 2 children were born, Sean and Jessica. Ron and Norma later divorced in 1974, but found love again as they reunited in marriage on July 4, 2002.

Ron was an outstanding baseball player when he was younger playing for the Clarinda A's. During his playing days he was approached to play for the Pittsburg Pirates farm team, but he turned down the offer because he was a Saint Louis Cardinals fan.

Ron lived in many different places throughout his life. Besides Iowa he also lived in Florida, Arizona, Massachusetts and Michigan. During his time away from Iowa he worked many jobs including security, pest control, waste management, and at different factories. He was also a member of the National Guard and Reserves for several years.

After his health started to decline Ron kept busy with odd jobs here and there including being a mail carrier for about two years for the Omaha World Herald.

Ron enjoyed many things in his life, but the absolute joy of his life was his many grandchildren and his great-granddaughter. He also was the biggest St. Louis Cardinal fan you would ever be able to find. Ron was an avid sports fan and never wanted to miss a single high school game even when his health was fading.
