Gene started his schooling in a country school and finished in Sharpsburg when his folks moved closer to town. He graduated from the eighth grade and went to work for Howard Weller at his service station. In 1960, he purchased the inventory of the Standard Oil Station from Spencer Peck and Paul Roberts and rented the building from Joe Brammer. Later on, he took over the gas station on the south end of Wabash Street. On September 24, 1961, he was united in marriage to Connie Kemery in Lenox, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Leonard Scott and Coleen Ann. Sometime in the late 1960's he went to work on road construction working for several different contractors. In the winter months he would work at his other lifelong passion . . . . his repair shop.

Gene was a "people person". While on road construction he made life-long friends, keeping tabs on them through the telephone lines the rest of his life. He never met a stranger! Gene and Connie couldn't go anywhere but what they would have to stop to visit with someone! Gene always enjoyed the town's celebrations, serving on the Sharpsburg Fire Department for over 50 years. And he was always up for a good card game!

Gene's other passions were making peanut brittle, growing a big garden so he could share the produce with his friends and family. Enjoyed going to auctions, deer hunting and cooking. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, Gene would get his family together for a big pot luck dinner . . . . he loved good food!

Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend are his loving wife Connie Mains of Sharpsburg; daughter Coleen Hogue and husband Matt; and grandchildren Garrett and Gabrielle. Granddaughters Melissa Kennan and friend Jack Marler and great-grandchildren Andrew, Abigail, Ava Kennan and Kolten Marler.
