Byron G. Eaton was born in New Hampshire, 24 October, 1827.
He was a
farmer and married at least three times. According to the Sullivan
County, New Hampshire, 1850 census Mr. Eaton's wife, Mary F. who was
born about 1830. She and Mr. Eaton had two living children, William
Berton
Eaton, born ca 1852 in New Hampshire and Carrie E. Eaton, born ca
1858 in Illinois.
When the 1860 Kane county census was taken Mr. Eaton and his two
children were living on a farm in Kane County, Illinois. Apparently
his first wife had passed away.
On 24 September, 1860 Mr. Eaton married Jane Olmstead, who was born
1 Mar 1829 in New York. Mr. Eaton and Miss Olmstead were married
in Batavia, Kane, Illinois. She was the daughter of Aaron and
Betsy Wilson Olmstead.
Mr. Eaton and his wife, Jane had at least four children before she
died
in 1870. Jane was still living when the 1870 Taylor County, Iowa census
was taken. Based on the ages of the children it is likely the Eatons
moved to Taylor County not long before 1870. Jane likely died
in Taylor
county, but a death record has not been found to date. Their
children
were: Bessie Jane Eaton, born 1864-Jun 1932, Mary Eaton born ca 1863,
Illinois, Rhoda Eaton, born ca 1866, Illinois, and Emiline Eaton born
ca
1868 in Illinois.
Based on Taylor County marriage records, Byron G. Eaton and Melissa
V.
Campbell were married in Taylor county on 4 May 1871. The couple
only
had one living son, Byron P. Eaton 1877-1932.
Melissa V. Campbell was the daughter of John and Esther McClain Campbell.
She was born in Farmington, Lee, Iowa 22 March, 1846.
John and Esther Campbell's other children were: Allen M. 1840-1878l,
Catherine 1842-1917, Susan F. 1843-1857, Lock 1848-1929, Emma 1852-1854,
Orr 1854-aft 1927 and an infant 1856-1857.
Catharine Campbell married John P. Wright in Taylor county, Iowa
6 Nov.
1866. Her brother Lock Campbell married Ethel Wright.
Several of the Campbells, Wrights and Eatons are buried in Graceland
Cemetery at Bedford, Taylor, Iowa.
For a brief period of time Mr. Eaton served as a Private in Company
C.,
127th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Mr.
Eaton joined
the Illinois 127th from Kane county, Illinois. He was granted
a Civil
War pension prior to his death and his wife, Melissa received a Widow's
Pension.
Byron G. Eaton and his family moved from Taylor county, Iowa to Hopkins,
Missouri and also lived in St. Joseph, Missouri. Though the
Eatons died
in Missouri their bodies were returned to Taylor County, Iowa for
burial.
Mr. Eaton's daughter, Bessie Jane Eaton married Edward Ransom Coleman
20 September, 1885 in Missouri or Arkansas. They were the parents
of nine
children. The family moved to La Veta, Huerfano, Colorado in 1890
so Mr.
Coleman and his brother, Elmer E. Coleman could continue with their
stone
mason trade. The Coleman Bros. built many very fine sandstone
homes and
buildings in Huerfano County, before their deaths. Mr. and Mrs.
Edward
R. Coleman are buried in La Veta, Huerfano, Colorado.
(Data is documented by Dorothy B. Logozzo with census, birth, death,
marriage, newspaper, cemetery, biographical records and personal
knowledge of the Coleman family. She looks forward to hearing
from
persons who are interested in more information about the families
noted
above.)
