This is a picture of George W. Barnes Sr. He was blind at the
time this was taken, and that's why he has the cane in this photograph.
He was married five times and had sixteen children by four of them.
He lived in Johnson County, Iowa until he became
blind and too old to manage the home place. He then went to live
in Taylor County, Iowa with his sons George Jr., Joseph, Henry and Isam.
He also spent some time at his
daughter Ann's farm in Poweshiek County, Iowa. In 1895 his son Gus
came from
Smith County, Kansas and took him back there to live with his other sons
William F. and Chesley, and this is where he died on 6 May 1896.
