J. D. Finch Traer Star Clipper "Civil War Veteran Is Dead - J. D. Finch, of Traer, Succumbs at Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown of Heart Disease" John D. Finch, a Civil war veteran who has been living in the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown the past few years, died at the Home hospital Sunday at 12:15 p.m. of heart disease. Mr. Finch went to the Home from Boone September 15, 1902, but had lived near Traer many years. He was born in Delaware county, Ohio, June 4, 1843, and enlisted at Toledo, July 14, 1862, in Company K, Eighteenth Iowa infantry. Mr. Finch was discharged at Little Rock, Ark., July 20, 1865. On August 5, 1866, he was united in marriage with Hattie H. Bartholemew, of Tama county, who died at Buckingham April 29, 1917. To this union eight children were born, one dying when a baby. Mr. Finch married again March 8, 1921, to Cynthia Bruner. Descendent is survived by the widow, who is a member of the Home, and five sons and two daughter. The sons are A. R., Fred W. and Orrin Finch, of Traer; Harry Finch of Boone; and Loren Finch of Rock Island, Ill. The daughters are Mrs. Minnie Beatty and Mrs. Lula Davis, of Traer. A short service was held at the Soldiers' Home at 1:30 Monday afternoon and the body was brought to Traer for burial. More extended services were held at the M. E. church here on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Mr. Billingsley. Members of the American Legion in uniform served as pall bearers. Interment was in Buckingham cemetery.
