Born 1819, Kentucky. Died Apr. 11, 1973. War Record: Major General U.S. Army

Photographic History of the Civil War, Vo. 10, page 182; Maj. Gen. Edward Richard Sprigg Canby (U.S.M.A.1839) Entering the Army, he served in the Seminole and Mexican wars. When the Civil War broke out he served as Colonel in New Mexico, held that territory for the Union, and prevented a Confederate invasion of California. Then, for some time he was on special duty in the North and East. In May 1864, with the rank of major-general of volunteers, he assumed command of the Military Division of West Mississippi. He captured Mobile, April 12, 1865, and following month arranged for the surrender of the Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi Dept. June 3, 1865, he succeeded to the command of the Army and Department of the Gulf. After the close of the war he was made brigadier-general in the regular army, and was put in command of the Dept. of the Columbia. While engaged in attempting to settle difficulties between the Government and the Modoc Indians, he was treacherously murdered by their chief, April 11, 1873.
