Incorporated 1891. Railroads - Toledo and Northwestern 1882, Great
Northern (Sioux City Northern) 1882 First post office August 25,
1882.
Cemetery
- Sherman Township Cemetery in Section 15, two and a
half mile east of town. First burial was in 1886. Records and
very complete including birth dates Records are kept by Jim
Vlieger, Maurice, and are very complete including birth dates.
Burials before that were made in Orange City.
- St. Mary’s Cemetery Sec 17 in located a half mile
south of town. First burial 1884. Records are at St. Joseph
Catholic Church at Struble IA.
- St John’s Lutheran Cemetery Reading Township
located four miles west and a half mile south of town. Records
are kept by Roy Hawkins, Maurice.
Churches
- First Reformed Church was organized 23 October 1884.
They have a church histories of 50th, 75th, and 100 year
anniversaries in the church library. Records are at the church
office and at the Gr. Soc Co. Gen. Soc Sioux Center Library.
- American Reformed Church from 1907 to 1945 when it
was disbanded. Most members joined the existing Reformed
Church. Records at the Dutch Heritage Room Northwestern
College Orange City IA and at the Gr. So. Co. Gen. Soc. Sioux
Center Library.
- St. Mary’s Catholic Church Organized Aug 1884
closed 1996. Church records are at St. Joseph Catholic Church
at Struble, IA.
- Methodist Church 1887 - 1907 Records unknown.
- St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is located
in Reading Township. Organized in 1875. Records - contact
Wendall Toenjes, Lemars IA.
- Histories of the church are in the Maurice Centennial Book
1991 which is in area libraries and the First Reformed Church
Library.
Histories
- The Maurice Centennial Book 1991 is an excellent
resource for town, churches, cemeteries, and organizations.
Also contains many family histories. The book is at the
Reformed Church Library, the Gr. So. Co. Gen. Soc at the Sioux
Center Library and many area libraries.
Newspapers
- Maurice Times files are on microfilm at the Newspaper
Library in the State Historical Building in Des Moines from
1916-1919. These are also in the Dutch Heritage Room at
Northwestern College at Orange City, IA.
- The Maurice News was carried in the Sioux County Herald
(now the Capital) and the Alton Democrat.
- News was also in the DeVolkvriend (in Dutch) Orange
City , IA.
