Jack Wendell Carmichael
July 7, 1922 - August 9, 2009
Jack Wendell Carmichael, son of Neil and Mary Lenore (Tobias) Carmichael, was
born on July 7, 1922 in rural Harlan, Iowa. He attended country school in Monroe
Township. After graduating from Harlan High School, Jack worked as a welder in
the shipyards in CA. Jack joined the Navy and came home to tell his parents good
bye before leaving for active duty. It was at this time in the kitchen of his
parents home where he met Helen Glen Algren, the Cuppy’s Grove school teacher
who was boarding with his family. Helen later became his wife. He then left for
active service for three years and 21 days, and was stationed in the North
Atlantic, Western Pacific and South Pacific Oceans during World War II. On
October 10, 1944 in Miami, Florida, Jack and Helen were married. Following
Jack’s discharge, the couple returned to his childhood home southeast of Harlan,
where they farmed for a number of years. Later, he worked construction for G.A.
Findley in Harlan. In the early 1970s, Jack began working for the Soil
Conservation Service as a State Technician.
Jack was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, and the
Helmer Reyelt A.L. Post #150, where he had served as Commander for four years.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, and his hobbies included china
painting, gardening, and baking. Community service was also important to Jack as
he often would take fresh produce to the nursing home, served as a Big Brother,
and was there to help those in need. Jack and Helen often took baked goods to
the organization of Concerned.

Howard Odel, son of Ed and Ethel M. (Alwill) French, was born November 30, 1917,
on a farm southwest of Manning in Shelby County, Iowa. Howard grew up on that
same farm and attended Jefferson #7 rural school. While in country school he met
his first and only girl friend Arlene R. Polzin. They were united in marriage on
February 8, 1940 at the home of Arlene’s parents in Audubon County. Four
children were born to this union
Howard and Arlene made their home on a farm in Polk Township in Shelby County
before settling on a farm in Jefferson Township. In the late 1980s they retired
from farming but stayed living on the home place south of Manning, near Irwin.
Howard’s son Carl started farming with him in 1974. Howard enjoyed all aspects
of farming, especially working with cattle, and considered it his hobby as well
as his livelihood. Howard and Arlene enjoyed fishing at Leach Lake in Minnesota
and playing cards with family and friends. Howard was a long time member of
Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township and continued his interest in the
church even after it was moved into Manning and he had transferred his
membership to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
Arlene became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in 1995 after
suffering a stroke and her health began to fail and she died on May 1, 2003.
Howard continued to live on the farm until he was no longer able to live alone
and drive. He moved to the Manning Plaza in September of 2006. Howard enjoyed
the activities, the food and visiting with friends while he was able. Howard’s
health began to seriously deteriorate in August of 2009 and he died at the
Manning Plaza early Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at the age of 91 years, 9
months and 3 days.

On June 13, 1938, Tillie was united in marriage to Jacob Joseph Nowatzke at St.

northeast of Panama before moving to the farm they purchased in 1942 east of
Panama. Tillie helped Jake with the farm duties including working with the
chickens, geese, and ducks and milking the cows. She also enjoyed tending to the
baby farm animals. Tillie and Jake continued to live on the farm until September
1982 when they retired from farming and moved into Panama.

family.
