Bertha Cecelia, daughter of Anders Peder and Ane Marie (Christensen) Andersen, was born August 16, 1911, in Oakfield Township, Audubon County, Iowa. She was baptized at Oak Hill Lutheran Church and later confirmed at Elk Horn Lutheran Church. Bertha attended Clay Township country school and then graduated in 1930 from Elk Horn High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska and then taught school in Elk Horn, Kimballton and Walnut. During summer vacations, she taught at the Okoboji Bible School and church conferences. Her travels to Japan and the Scandinavian countries provided many experience for her. She enjoyed showing her slides to the community and writing about her travels.

Upon retiring from teaching she was librarian of the Elk Horn Library and became active in bringing the Danish windmill to Elk Horn. Because of her Danish background, she helped establish the Danish Immigrant Museum. Her search for Danish relatives and translation of documents for Danish descendants brought much pleasure to her life. She was a member of the teaching staff for the Elder hostels conducted in Elk Horn for five years. Over the years she enjoyed writing articles about Danish heritage. Bertha was a lifelong devoted member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church where she served as organist, as well as Sunday School Superintendent. Bertha assisted the chaplaincy of Salem Homes by conducting devotions and serving as organist and soloist for many years. Bertha was also a life time member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

In October of 2004, when Bertha was no longer able to live alone, she became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. She died there early Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at the age of 97 years, 3 months and 9 days. Preceding Bertha in death are her parents; sister Hilda and husband Raymond Hemmingsen; ‘brother’ Chris Christensen and nephew Vernon Hemmingsen.

She is survived by three nephews: Raynor Hemmingsen and wife Ingrid of Atlantic; Franklin Hemmingsen and wife Jerri of Elk Horn and Dewey Hemmingsen and wife Ginger of Cedar Rapids; ten great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Charles James Andersen
November 10, 1914 - December 26, 2008

Charles James Andersen, the son of Lawrence D. and Margaret J. (Andersen) Andersen, was born on November 10, 1914, in Harlan, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Harlan High School in 1932. After graduation, Charles worked as a hired man for Frank Meyer and Martin Arentson. While attending a dance in Corley, Iowa, he met Marcella Peters. Charles and Marcella were married on January 6, 1937, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Harlan. The couple farmed for many years near Corley, Walnut (Iowa), and Harlan, and at one point, Charles also drove truck part time for Willie Sorensen. In 1964, Charles and Marcella retired from farming and moved into Harlan. Charles then worked part time for ASCS before being employed as a feed salesman by Walnut Grove. In 1973, he began working for Drs. Christensen, Havick, and Pleak as the desk clerk at their Vet Clinic; he retired from this position in 1981. He then worked part time for Dr. Early until 1985.
In 1999, Charles and Marcella became residents of the Independent Living Apartments at the Elm Crest Retirement Community. Marcella died on November 13, 2003, in Harlan. Charles had recently moved to Avoca Lodge Assisted Living in Avoca, Iowa.

Charles was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. He was a quiet man who enjoyed polka music, playing cards, and reading westerns. He had fond memories of his years as a farmer, and especially the time spent caring for his livestock.

Charles J. Andersen died on Friday, December 26, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 94 years, 1 month, and 16 days.

Preceding Charles in death were his parents; his wife, Marcella Andersen; and four brothers, Marvin Andersen, Levi Andersen, Orville Andersen, and Arthur Andersen. He is survived by one daughter, Valdine Schueman of Avoca, Iowa; one son, Richard (Shari) Andersen of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two sisters, Arlene (Darwin) Warner of Harlan, Iowa, and Marilyn (Jack) Miles of Saint Louis, Missouri; six grandchildren, Steven Schueman, David Schueman, Dean Schueman, Denise Hargens, Scott Andersen, and Michelle McCord; 12 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 29, 2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz served as the organist. Casket bearers were Dean Schueman, Steven Schueman, David Schueman, Scott Andersen, Alex Hargens, Tony McCord, and Rodney Hargens. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Elizabeth T. "Betty" Baca, age 76, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, after a brave battle with cancer. She was a member of the San Clemente Catholic Church in Los Lunas and an Army Veteran.

Betty was born in Panama, Iowa, where she attended parochial schools. She joined the U.S. Army in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. While stationed at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, Betty met her loving husband and lifetime companion, Cres Baca. She was one of the first Women's Army Corps medical technicians to be assigned to Sandia Base. Betty was an accomplished vocalist who sang professionally in her youth and headlined several performances presented at military installations while stationed there with Cres. She was also featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine as a new recruit for the Women's Army Corps.

Betty and Cres traveled extensively during their retirement years, visiting old haunts in Europe and new haunts in America. She loved to dance and paint. Betty was an avid and talented arts and crafts person, and most of the art in her home is her own work. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and especially her family. Betty was a real guardian angel over her brood, and they are confident she will continue that task. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Theresa Mickels. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Col. (Retired) Cres C. Baca of the family home; son, Ricardo Baca of Albuquerque; daughter, Pamela Baca-Sewell and her husband, James, of Pueblo, Colo.; son, James Baca of Roswell; daughter, Christine Vallejos and husband, Victor, of Belen; and son, David Baca and wife, Sarah, of Albuquerque. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Daniel Baca, Zack Baca, Elizabeth Montano, Eric Montano, Melissa Baca, Jessica Baca, Michael Baca, Kimberly Sewell and Jacob Sewell.

All services will be held at San Clemente Catholic Church, beginning with a viewing on Monday, May 26, at 5 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. A final visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 27, at 9:30 a.m. with a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2 p.m. with military honors. Pallbearers will be Richard, James and David Baca, Victor Vallejos, Eric Montaño and Dan Costello.

Esther Amelia Becker
August 24, 1913 - October 7, 2008

Esther Amelia Becker, the daughter of Raymond Oliver and Maude (Evans) Davis, was born on August 24, 1913, on a farm near Persia, Iowa. She grew up surrounded by a large family, including aunts, uncles, and cousins. Esther attended the Pleasant Ridge Country School which was located right next to her family’s farm. She later attended Tennant (Iowa) High School.

At the age of thirteen, Esther experienced a life-threatening accident on the family farm. During her recovery, her older brother brought a new friend, Herbert Becker, home for Sunday dinners with the family. When Esther was 17, Herb proposed; they were married at the First Methodist Church Parsonage in Harlan, Iowa, on January 28, 1931. After they were married, they moved to Russell, Iowa, where Herb had grown up. On November 6, 1945, Esther and Herb moved to her family farm home near Persia. Years later, they moved to a home north of Shelby, Iowa, where they were hired to manage a farm for Bob Cooper. They worked hard on the farm, raising livestock and grain crops. Herb died on May 24, 1985. Esther lived alone on the farm and continued to drive until she was ninety years old. She then became a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa.

Esther was a member of the Tennant United Methodist Church, where she was involved with the ladies of the church. A dedicated homemaker who was known for her homemade noodles and fried chicken, Esther was named Homemaker of the Year by the Harlan newspaper. She took loving care of her family and friends, and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening, and bowling in her spare time. Christmas was a special time for her, and she decorated both the inside and outside of her home for the season. Esther loved to travel to California to visit with her daughter, Karean, and family.

Esther A. Becker died on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 95 years, 1 month, and 13 days.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert William Becker; six sisters, Elsie, Martha, Mary, Margaret, Alice, and Bertha; and three brothers, Raymond, Wilbur, and Robert. She is survived by one son, Bob (Paula) Becker of Shelby, Iowa; two daughters, Betty (John) Stamp of Persia, Iowa, and Karean (Hal) Madsen of Santa Ana, California; one sister, Frances Lawrence of Avoca, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the Shelby United Methodist Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Rev. Orris L. Drake officiating. Honorary casket bearers were Gene Peters, David Whaling, Jim Hockett, Harold Nihsen, Raymond Buman, and Donald Plumb. MANILLA -- Eleanor C. Benson, 94, Manilla, formerly of Irwin and Harlan, died Sunday, Oct. 12 in Manilla.
Services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Irwin with burial in the Danway Cemetery in rural Shelby County. Friends may call Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 1-9 p.m. at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan. Family will greet friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Benson is survived by sons Edwin (Connie) Benson of Irwin and Keith Benson of Wayzata, Mn.; daughters Kathryn (Arnie) Nelson of Wayzata and Myrna Havick of Harlan; sisters Maxine Browning of Harlan and Gilma (Don) Bornholdt of Solon Springs, Wi.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Eleanor Cora (Olson) Benson

Eleanor Cora Benson, the daughter of Adolph and Nellie (Hanson) Olson, was born on August 17, 1914, in rural Irwin, Iowa. She attended Irwin and Harlan (Iowa) High Schools, graduating in 1932. She received her teaching certificate and taught at the Danway Country School for several years. On October 14, 1934, Eleanor married Jesse Milan Benson at Martin Benson’s home in Irwin. The couple farmed east of Irwin for many years, and Eleanor was a valuable helper on the farm. She later worked in the kitchen at the Irwin Community School in Irwin, and as a ward clerk at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.
After Jesse’s death, on February 28, 1968, in Omaha, Nebraska, Eleanor remained on the farm. In 1970, she moved into Irwin, where she lived until 2004. She then moved to the Westridge Apartments in Harlan. Recently, Eleanor had become a resident of the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa.

Eleanor was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa, where she had served as Sunday School superintendent and was a member of the ladies groups. She enjoyed quilting and was well-known for making her wonderful chicken noodle soup. A dedicated volunteer, Eleanor was awarded the 1989 Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award.

Eleanor C. Benson died on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at the Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa, having reached the age of 94 years, 1 month, and 25 days.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesse Milan Benson; two sisters, Bernice Wareberg and Adeline Stolz; and one brother, LaVerne Olson. She is survived by two sons, Edwin (Connie) Benson of Irwin, Iowa, and Keith Benson of Wayzata, Minnesota; two daughters, Kathryn (Arnie) Nelson of Wayzata, Minnesota, and Myrna Havick of Harlan, Iowa; two sisters, Maxine Browning of Harlan, Iowa, and Gilma (Don) Bornholdt of Solon Springs, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.

Opal Lorraine (Jorgensen) Faaborg, 86, of Anita, Iowa, formerly of Atlantic, Iowa, was born May 14, 1922, the daughter of Thorvald and Stella (Justesen) Jorgensen in Sharon Township, Audubon County, Iowa, and passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at Colonial Manor in Anita, Iowa.
Opal grew up and attended school in the Elk Horn- Kimballton area. On April 7, 1945, she was married to Lyle Faaborg in Killeen, Texas. The couple spent most of their lives farming around the Exira, Kimballton, and Atlantic, Iowa areas, retiring in 1992. During the early years of their marriage, Opal worked as a waitress and cleaned houses in Elk Horn and Kimballton. After the birth of her sons, Opal’s life was dedicated to taking care of her family and helping with the farm. Opal will be remembered as a wonderful cook and an adoring Grandmother. She will be missed as a loving soul who loved the Lord.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 27, 2008, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. No visitation is planned. Burial will be in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery in Elk Horn, Iowa.

The family invites friends to a luncheon in the church fellowship hall following the funeral service, prior to the committal service.

Opal is survived by her sons, Dennis Faaborg of Nashville, Tennessee, and Rick Faaborg and his wife Debbie of Buckley, Washington; her grandchildren, Nicole Faaborg of Denver, Colorado, Brooke Faaborg of Nashville, Tennessee, Chad Faaborg of Portland, Oregon, and Clay Faaborg of Bothel, Washington; her sister, Frankie Bladt of Elk Horn, Iowa; her niece, Zelda Marxen of Atlantic, Iowa; her nephew, Terry Jorgensen and his wife Barb, of Ida Grove, Iowa; and her brothers-in-law Jerry Faaborg and his wife, Lee of Joplin, Missouri, and Darwin Faaborg and his wife, Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Jara Evelyn Fondren was born on December 10, 1978, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and departed this life on Sunday, November 23, 2008, in Stroud, OK, at the age of 29.

Jara, the daughter of Leslie Harrell, was a resident of Stroud. She married Charles Fondren on May 13, 2002, in Bentonville, Arkansas. Jara was a Hair Stylist and a member of the Lincoln County on Stage.

Survivors include, Husband, Charles Fondren of the home, Son, Colton Fondren of the home, Brother, Nocus Ahtone of Stroud, OK, Other relatives and many friends.

Everett Andrew Greve

Everett Andrew Greve, son of Peter and Alvina (Henricksen) Greve, was born on September 3, 1919 on a farm southeast of Harlan, Iowa. He attended Jackson #8 country school through the eighth grade and then worked for various area farmers. On August 6, 1941 Everett married Mabel Hansen in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple farmed for six years before purchasing a trucking business from Marcussen Brothers. Mabel passed away in August 1975. On July 19, 1986 Everett married Virginia “Ginnie” O’Neil. She passed away in January 2006. Everett continued to operate a gas station and tire business until January 2008. On February 6 of this year he became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa.
Everett was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. When he was young he enjoyed playing baseball and later coached the Jacksonville cub team for nine years. Three of those teams won the Marne Tournament! Everett liked to dance, bowl, golf, and play cards, especially Jacksonville Pitch. He was well known for his great sense of humor and big, warm smile.

Everett passed away October 28, 2008 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 1 month, and 25 days.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Alvina Greve, his first wife, Mabel (Hansen) Greve, his second wife, Virginia “Ginnie” (O’Neil) Greve, and one brother, Elliot Greve. He is survived by two sons, Karl (Judith) Greve of Ellsworth, Iowa and Calvin Greve of Ocala, Florida, two sisters, Dorothy (Victor) Hoogensen of Harlan, Iowa and Elaine Christoffersen of Kimballton, Iowa, one brother, Harvey (Doris) Greve of Walnut, Iowa, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Kurt D. Gahm, age 42, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., died October 22, 2008.

Kurt was born on February 4, 1966, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Charles J. (Joe) and Norma J. (Graybill) Gahm. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1984 and attended airline school in St. Louis, Mo. Kurt was employed in the airline industry for several years, based in Kansas City, Mo., then moved with his family to Tennessee in 1990. He was seriously injured in a work-related accident in 1999, and was disabled as a result of his injuries.

In addition to his parents, Joe and Norma, Kurt is survived by his beloved sons, Trevor and Dylan, Franklin, of Tenn.; his "big" brothers, Mark and wife Kristin, Karl Lee and special friend, Desiree, of Council Bluffs; "little" sister, Gina Gahm and special friend Ryan of Alliance, Ohio; grandmother, Vera Long, of Harlan, Iowa; nieces, Tessa and Anna; nephews, Gary and Blaine; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends, as well as his constant companions, two Boston Terriers, Gizmo and Gigi.

Mildred Lucille Griener, the daughter of Carl T. and Mathilda (Knudson) Brue, was born on July 20, 1918, in rural Manilla, Iowa. She was raised south of Irwin, Iowa, and graduated from Irwin High School in 1935. Mildred lived in California for a short time before returning to Iowa. In the mid-1940s, she married Larry Griener. Mildred settled in Harlan, Iowa, where she owned and operated the Griener Café for many years.
Mildred was a member of the Auxiliary of the Harlan VFW Post #941. She enjoyed gardening and loved flowers. She and Larry were interested in bee-keeping. Mildred was a good cook, and loved music and dancing.

Mildred L. Griener died on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa, having reached the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 29 days.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry Griener; one sister, Norma Barratt; and two brothers, Harold Brue and Lavern Brue. She is survived by one stepson, Bruce (Sharon) Griener of Chicago, Illinois; one brother, Bill (Peggy) Brue of Irwin, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Andrew Orlando “Juny” Hanson III, son of Andrew and Olga (Rasmussen) Hanson II, was born October 17, 1926, at Polk Township, Shelby County, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Polk Township. Juny was a 1944 graduate from Kirkman High School. As a boy he was active in 4-H Club and showed cattle at the Iowa State Fair. Juny worked on the family farm and for other area farmers, drove a livestock truck and delivered the Sunday newspaper.

On November 13, 1949, Juny was united in marriage with Ladelle Wiese at Sioux City. The couple lived near Manilla and farmed with his brother Homer. Beginning in 1970 Juny worked at Farmland Foods in Denison for 17 years. They moved closer to Manilla in 1981.

Juny was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. He enjoyed watching auto racing and was a Dale Earnhardt fan. Juny enjoyed special times at the lake, family gatherings and especially time with his grandchildren.

In August 2008 Juny’s health began to decline. He died at home in Manilla surrounded by his family on Monday night, November 3, 2008, at the age of 82 years and 17 days.

Juny is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Raynard, Alvin and Homer Hanson; brother-in-law Allan Wiese; and sisters-in-law Lyla Thompson, Phyllis Hanson and Ruby Hanson.

Wilma Havick, age 91, of Harlan, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at the Creighton University Medical Center.

She was born on August 16, 1917, in Oakland, Iowa. She was a nurse at Oakland Manor Nursing Home.

Wilma is survived by sons, Bruce (Kay) Havick, of Harlan, James (Darlene) Havick, of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Steven (Jill) Havick, of Urbandale, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; and 2 step great grandchildren; and sister, Helen (Roy) Forbis, of Dallas, Texas.

Gladys L. Herbst, age 87, of Council Bluffs, passed away December 23, 2008, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

Gladys was born June 10, 1921, in Panama, Iowa to the late Emmet and Matilda (Stolz) Carroll. She graduated from Panama, St. Mary's High School in 1938. She married Victor Herbst in 1940, and to this union 10 children were born. Gladys was a homemaker and accomplished seamstress. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Herbst in 1988; daughter, Julie in 1954; son, Kerry in 2006; sister, Carmen Haines; brother, Robert Carroll.

Dorothy Ann Hoogensen, daughter of Peter J. and Alvina (Henriksen) Greve, was born March 25, 1922, in Center Township, Shelby County, Iowa.
She attended school at Jackson Township No.8 for six years and Monroe Township No.1 for two years. After graduating with honors from the eighth grade in 1935, she went to work in many homes in the area and also helped with the farming by driving the horses and tractors and milking cows.

On August 20, 1941, she married Victor Leo Hoogensen at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. In later years, their claim was that they belonged to that church longer than any other couple because both were baptized and confirmed there, too. She was active in Luther League, the Women's Organization, and was Superintendent and a teacher for Sunday School. She was also a leader for the Junior Mission Society and 4-H.

Dorothy enjoyed camping, entertaining, writing poetry and skits, playing cards, and sewing. She sewed many quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief.

Victor and Dorothy lived on three different Jackson Township farms before moving to Harlan in 1980, and they enjoyed fifteen winters in their mobile home in Apache Junction, Arizona.

Dorothy died peacefully in her sleep at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan on November 25, 2008, having attained the age of 86 years and eight months.

Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Elliot and Everett Greve, sisters-in-law Mabel Greve, Arlene Hoogensen, and Ginnie Greve, and brother-in-law Kenneth Christoffersen. Survivors include her husband Victor of Harlan, her children Ken and Patsy (Mayr) Hoogensen of West Des Moines, Bob and Judy (Swisher) Hoogensen of Harlan, Vicki and Manny Salazar of Harlan, and Linda Hoogensen Graff of West Des Moines, brother Harvey and Doris Greve of Walnut, sister Elaine Christoffersen of Kimballton, sister-in-law Elaine Greve Hoffman of Avoca, and brother-in-law Gilbert Hoogensen of Harlan. She is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren: Jeff and Susan Hoogensen of Marshalltown; Jon and Angie, Jacob, Finn, and Laurel Hoogensen; Julie and Ted, Grace, Olivia, and Andrew Peelen all of West Des Moines; Jennifer and Gregg and Garrett Tiehen of Harrisburg, South Dakota; and Steve and Kara, Kate and Mallory Hoogensen of Ankeny. Also surviving Dorothy are nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, with Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiating. Peggy Doonan was the organist, and Phyllis Larsen and Adrienne Petersen were the vocalists. Casket bearers were Karl Greve, Peter Greve, Gerry Greve, Bryan Greve, Dave Greve, and Don Christoffersen. Burial was in the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements. Virginia Mae Hulsebus
May 8, 1914 - November 25, 2008

Virginia Mae Hulsebus, the daughter of James Harold and Cecil L. (Sunderland) Philson, was born on May 8, 1914, in rural Harlan, Iowa. She grew up in rural Harlan and moved into town with her family in 1920, where she attended Harlan schools. After graduating from Harlan High School in 1932, Virginia taught country school in Jackson and Center Townships. On October 20, 1934, she married John Theodore Hulsebus in Decorah, Iowa. From 1943-1945, under an emergency war teaching certificate, Virginia again taught school.
From 1973-1979, Virginia and John spent time at their retirement home on Big Stone Lake in Ortonville, Minnesota. John died on January 18, 1995, in Omaha, Nebraska.

Virginia joined the First United Methodist Church in Harlan in 1927. She became a member of the Zenobia Rebekah Lodge #286 in 1933, and continued membership until her death. Virginia received the Lodge’s highest honor, “Decoration of Chivalry” on July 17, 1986. She enjoyed sports, gardening, and feeding and watching birds. Virginia loved people and found great pleasure in visiting with them.

Virginia M. Hulsebus died on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 17 days.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John T. Hulsebus; one brother, James Philson; one infant sister; and two grandsons, Kelly Hulsebus and Scott Hulsebus. She is survived by three sons, Clinton (Jean) Hulsebus of Kimberling City, Missouri, Keith (Cindy) Hulsebus of Harlan, Iowa, and James (Pearl) Hulsebus of Rochester, Minnesota; one brother, Merlin Philson of Hamilton, Montana; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Dave Swinton officiating. Marge Ahrenholtz was the organist, and Lee Nelson was the soloist. Casket bearers were Mark Hulsebus, Travis Culp, Don Petsche, Justin Hulsebus, Joel Hulsebus, Jerry Hulsebus, Mike Humphrey, and Tom Humphrey. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Daisy June (Lidgett) James
November 16, 1924 - October 23, 2008

Daisy June James, the daughter of John Lewis and Daisy (Whiltshire) Lidgett, was born on November 16, 1924, in Elgin, Nebraska. She attended school in Elgin and Neligh, Nebraska. On January 18, 1940, in Yankton, South Dakota, Daisy married George Hanley James. The couple moved to the Harlan, Iowa, area in 1941, where Daisy was employed as a waitress for Ray and Fern Rasmussen. She also helped area farmers with their farm work. For many years, Daisy and George worked on a rented farm located south of Harlan. George died on June 19, 1973; during that fall, she moved into Harlan.
From 1966-1980, Daisy worked at the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan. In 1980, she became a 911 Operator at the Shelby County Communication Center; she remained at this job until her retirement in 1993.

Daisy, whose favorite color was red, enjoyed reading, playing cards with her grandchildren, and doing crossword puzzles. She spent time crocheting and mending, and was a great cook. Having lived through the Great Depression, she was known as a thrifty individual. After her retirement, she enjoyed babysitting. Daisy recognized the importance of blood donation, and had the distinction of having personally donated nearly eight gallons.

Daisy J. James died on Thursday, October 23, 2008, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 7 days.

Daisy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Hanley James; and two sisters, Dolly Imsiek and Roma Good. She is survived by three sons, Hanley James of North Carolina, Rusty (Claudia) James of Des Moines, Iowa, and Michael (Kay) James of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one daughter, Patty (Pete) Stein of Portsmouth, Iowa; one sister, Dona Ganskow of Marbury, Maryland; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 27, 2008, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Donna Ewert and Pastor Roger Good officiating. Leota Swensen served as the pianist. Casket bearers were Sam Stein, Jorge Stein, Peter Stein, Scott James, Jason James, Tim Goeser, Shawn James, and Brian James. Zelda Marie Johannsen, the daughter of Herman C. and Amalia M. (Karstens) Burmeister, was born on November 8, 1914, near Corley, Iowa. She attended Fairview Township country school through the eighth grade. On August 2, 1939, Zelda married Norman Russell Johannsen in Avoca, Iowa. From 1940-1975, the couple farmed in Jackson and Monroe Townships. In 1975, their son, Galan, and his family moved to the farm, and Norman and Zelda moved to an acreage in Monroe Township. They lived there for ten years before retiring to Harlan, Iowa. In May, 2007, Zelda became a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa.
Zelda helped with farm work, gardening and helping pick corn. She and Norman enjoyed traveling south to Texas and Arizona. They liked to spend time camping, fishing at area lakes, playing cards, and dancing. Zelda loved to do quilting for herself, her family, and her church.

Zelda was an active member of Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She was a member of the Farm Bureau Women, and was named the Farm Bureau Homemaker of the Year in 1954. Zelda was involved in various neighborhood clubs, including the Meet Your Neighbor Club and the Friday Club.

Zelda M. Johannsen died on Friday, October 17, 2008, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, at the age of 93 years, 11 months, and 9 days.

Zelda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Alvin Burmeister and Harry Burmeister; and one son-in-law, Willis Krummel. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Norman Johannsen of Harlan, Iowa; one daughter, JoAnn Krummel of Avoca, Iowa; one son, Galan (Janet) Johannsen of Harlan, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 20, 2008, at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa, with Rev. Gail Muckey and Wayne Paulsen officiating. Sarah Kock served as the pianist, and Lesley Krummel, Amber McGreevy, and Eric Johannsen were the vocalists. Casket bearers were LuAnn Jensen, John Krummel, Michael Krummel, Bruce Krummel, Eric Johannsen, Sarah Fink, and Reid Johannsen. Burial was in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa. KLEIN, Frederick B. born on March 12, 1919 in Harlan, Iowa to the late John and Mary Klein. Baptized and confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa and attended county school in Harlan. On June 18, 1951 Fred was united in marriage to Dorothy Nebel at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union Bill, Charlotte, Marilyn and Larry. After their marriage Fred and Dorothy farmed in Cedar Rapids, NE until 1956. They moved to Omaha, NE where Fred worked for the Union Stockyards for 13 years then later Fred worked for the Omaha Public Schools where he retired from. Fred enjoyed Big Band music and most of all cherished his children and grandchildren.

Fred passed away Monday, December 1, 2008 at Blair Hospital in Blair, NE having attained the age of 89 years, 8 months and 19 days. In addition to his parents Fred is preceded in death by his brothers Tony, Vitus and Joe Klein, sisters, Catherine Petsche, Lenora Arkfeld, Susan Petsche and Josephine Book.

Survivors include his wife; Dorothy of 51 years, sons; William Klein, wife Jill of Greenfield, MA, Larry Klein, wife Cathy of Omaha, NE, daughters; Charlotte Sheehan, husband George of Omaha, NE and Marilyn White, husband Howard of Omaha, NE; brother John Klein, wife Isabel and sister; Cecilia Gross. She married Michael Kobold on May 10, 1948, at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Sioux City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1970, in Sioux City. She was employed at various companies in Sioux City and South Sioux City. She also was employed with Zenith, when the plant closed.

In her free time, she loved cooking and working in her vegetable garden. She attended Nativity Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Barb Flom of Sioux City; a son, Larry Kobold of Omaha; a grandson, Michael Kobold serving in the U.S. Navy stationed in the gulf; a brother and his wife, John and Dorothy Stanek of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joseph Stanek; and a sister, Mary Bekish.

Michael Kobold's parents, Joseph and Theresia (Bauer) Kobold, were former Shelby County, Iowa residents.

Roger Clifford Larson, the son of Clifford R. and Laura Mae (Pedersen) Larson, was born on September 6, 1955, in Riceville, Iowa. He graduated from Irwin (Iowa) High School in 1975. Roger worked at a number of jobs including construction, janitorial services, and most recently, as a packer at Variety Distributors in Harlan, Iowa. On April 10, 1999, Roger married Cindy Rae Feller at Peace Lutheran Church in Harlan. Roger was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed target shooting and reading gun magazines. Since his health prevented him from working during the last several years, he enjoyed spending time watching the History and Discovery channels, as well as televised tractor pulls. Roger had a wonderful sense of humor and loved a good joke. He also took pleasure in enjoying a delicious meal.

Roger C. Larson died on Thursday, December 4, 2008, at his home in Defiance, Iowa, at the age of 53 years, 2 months, and 28 days.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Roxann Schultz and one in infancy. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Larson of Defiance, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

A prayer service was held on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Merlene Ostebee of Peace Lutheran Church, Harlan, officiating. Casket bearers were Michael Krajicek, Michael Feller, Jason Feller, Adam Feller, Shane Ehlers, Jacob Feller, and Steven Arnold. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Kirkman, Iowa. Elsie M. Lehmer, age 86, of Council Bluffs, passed away November 13, 2008, at her home.

Elsie was born August 15, 1922, in Shelby, Iowa to the late Jens and Ellen (Lauritsen) Andersen. She attended Avenue B Elementary and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1940. Elsie married Walter B. Lehmer on August 8, 1942, in Omaha. To this union four sons were born. Elsie was a homemaker, fiddle player and avid bowler. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir; Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #441; former secretary for the Junior Bowling League.

Elsie was preceded in death by her infant son, John D. Lehmer; sister, Norma Jean Thomas.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Walter B. Vera Leona (Edwards) Long
October 29, 1915 - November 29, 2008

Vera Leona Long, the daughter of Roy and Myrtle (Brown) Edwards, was born on October 29, 1915, near Shelby, Iowa. She grew up on farms in the Shelby area and graduated from Shelby High School in 1933. On April 4, 1934, Vera married Wilbur Henry Graybill in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple had four children: Norma, Joyce, Wayne, and Derald. They farmed in the Persia (Iowa) area until 1943, when they moved to a farm near Tennant, Iowa; they farmed there for 29 years. Following retirement, Vera and Wilbur moved to Shelby and wintered in Arizona. Wilbur died in April, 1976, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Vera married her second husband, Cloyce Beresford Long, in 1976. They enjoyed 14 years of marriage before his death, in January, 1992, in Harlan, Iowa. Vera remained in her home until 1997, when she became a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.

Vera was a member of the Shelby United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, working on the farm, square dancing, playing cards, and gardening. She especially liked to visit the casinos.

Vera L. Long died on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 93 years and 1 month.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Wilbur Henry Graybill and Cloyce Beresford Long; one daughter, Joyce Berg, in 1996; one son, Wayne Graybill, in 1999; two sisters; three brothers; two grandsons, David Berg and Kurt Gahm; and one great-granddaughter, Lyndsey Gahm. She is survived by one son, Derald (Bette) Graybill of Shelby, Iowa; one daughter, Norma J. (C. Joe) Gahm of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews; longtime devoted friends, John and Helen Barrett of Tennant, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at the Shelby United Methodist Church in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Orris L. Drake officiating. Shirley Pattee was the organist, and Reva Jean Drake was the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were John and Helen Barrett. Active casket bearers were Mark Gahm, Krista Austin, Nikki Graybill, Karl Lee Gahm, Wayne Graybill, Jr., and Rodney Graybill. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa. Herbert James Mengwasser
June 18, 1928 - November 14, 2008

Herbert James Mengwasser, the son of John and Marcella (Leenan) Mengwasser, was born on June 18, 1928 in Union Township, Shelby County, Iowa. He was raised in the Defiance, Iowa, area and attended Defiance area country school. For a time, he drove a produce truck for Goeser Produce in Defiance. In December 1946, Herb enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed at Fort Crook, Nebraska. In 1948, Herbert was assigned to the 5001st Supply Squadron in Alaska as an ammunition worker. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in the USAF on December 12, 1949.
On May 1, 1952, Herbert married Sarah Corinne Walker at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Herbert worked for a plumbing firm in Harlan before joining the Harlan Municipal Utilities. He worked within the Water Department until his retirement in 1993. Sarah died on January 12, 2003, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Herbert became a resident of the Woodlands Nursing Home in Council Bluffs in March of 2008.

Herbert was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. He enjoyed gardening and raised vegetables. He also participated in the annual Christmas Lights Contest in Harlan.

Herbert J. Mengwasser died on Friday, November 14, 2008, at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, 4 months, and 27 days.

Preceding Herbert in death were his wife of 51 years, Sarah Corinne Mengwasser; his parents; one sister, Betty Jean Gross; and one brother, Raymond Mengwasser. Survivors include his one and only daughter, Elizabeth (John) Plott of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one granddaughter, Jessica (Kevin) McCarthy and two great grand children, Alexis and Levi McCarthy, all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two brothers, Bernard Mengwasser of Altoona, Iowa, and Louis (Rosie) Mengwasser of Denison, Iowa; and one uncle, Lawrence Leenan of Harlan, Iowa.

Pauline Adala Mickelsen, the daughter of Orlie and Clara Paulsen, was born
north of Atlantic, Iowa on April 23, 1919. While growing up, she attended
country school in Cass County.

Pauline was married to Lawrence Christian Mickelsen on January 4, 1941 in
Atlantic. The couple was blessed with three children. They farmed for
fifty-seven years until retiring in 1997. Pauline was a member of Peace
United Church of Christ in Walnut.

She is survived by her children, Joan Odsather and her husband Jerry of
Porterville, CA; Barbara Tweedt and her husband Larry of Sayre, PA; and
Darryl Mickelsen and his wife Deborah of Austin, MN; and six grandchildren,
Lori Odsather Daugherty and her husband Nick of San Jose, CA; Mark Odsather
and his wife Michelle of Porterville, CA; David Tweedt and his wife Despina
of Scarborough, ME; Shawn Tweedt and his wife April of Brookville, MD, Sarah

Dorothy Irene Neubauer, age 48, of Council Bluffs, passed away September 2, 2008, at Mercy Hospital, in Council Bluffs.

Dorothy was born February 29, 1960, in Omaha, Neb. Dorothy worked for the Amelia House and was a member of the Church of Freedom.

Dorothy is survived by husband, Bart; daughters, Emily L. Hayes, Kimberly D. Hayes, all of Council Bluffs; son, Jessie W. Gustin, of Savanna, Ga; 2 grandsons, Konnor and Grannt Parrott; parents, Tom and Betty Hayes; sister, Cindy Doucette, of Papillion, Neb.; brother, Craig Hayes and wife Margo, of Ashland, Neb; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family present will be Sunday, 4-6 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with Pastor Bob Thompson, of the Church of Freedom, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, in Omaha.

Mildred Irene, daughter of Rasmus and Mary (Mardesen) Nissen was born August 27, 1914 at Elk Horn, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Elk Horn Lutheran Church. Mildred attended Elk Horn Schools, graduating in 1932.

On March 10, 1942 Mildred was united in marriage with Emmert Olson at Maryville, Missouri. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Elk Horn where Mildred worked as a homemaker and helped out on the farm.

After the death of her husband on December 7, 1975, Mildred remained on the farm and began working as a nurse’s aid. In 1984 she moved to Elk Horn. Mildred was a life-long member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church and in her spare time she enjoyed gardening and playing cards.

In 2003 Mildred became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. She died there on October 24, 2008 at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 27 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters: Rena Paulsen, Florence Petersen, Frankie Namanny and Annabelle Nelson; and brothers: Clarence, Harvey, Melvin and Mick Nissen.

Mildred is survived by her son Lanny Olson and wife Margaret of rural Exira; grandson Kyle Olson of rural Exira; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Thelma Christena Olson, age 98, formerly of Irwin, died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Irwin, with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery near Kirkman. Visitation was held from to 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2008, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan. Pastor Ron Rasmussen served as both clergy and soloist. Nancy Larson was the organist. Casket bearers were Eugene Juhl, LeRoy Heese, Cyrus Monson, Eugene Monson, Dick Sorensen, and Danny Mickelson. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Irwin Fire and Rescue Department. Thelma was born June 3, 1910, near Irwin, and lived most of her life in the Irwin area. As a young person, Thelma spent several years living in Minnesota in the Spicer, New London, Belgrade, and Willmar areas. In 1933 she married Bertram Olson and the couple lived near Hancock for 10 years. Then the family moved to a farm southeast of Irwin, where they farmed for many years. Following retirement, Bert and Thelma moved to Irwin. Thelma is survived by two daughters, Cherrie Wiese of Topeka, KS, and Wanda (Ron) Sabby of Wallingford, by a daughter-in-law, Sue Olson of Sioux City, by three sons, Dean (Joyce) Olson of Minden, Alan Olson of LeMars, and David Olson of Lake Park, by a son-in-law, Tom Merritt of Harlan, by thirteen grandchildren, and by fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Elmer (Alice) Monson of Huntley, IL, and by a sister-in-law, Lillian Monson of Green Valley, AZ, and by many nieces and nephews. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Bert, by three sons, Clyde, Duane, and Stephen, by one daughter, Helen Merritt, and by one daughter-in-law, Sally Olson. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Ephriam and Mollie Monson, her brothers, Sanford, Herman, Orval, and Archie, and her sisters, Evona Monson, Alvah Johnson, Myrtle Mason, and Ruby Pump. As a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church, Thelma was active as a Sunday school teacher, a circle member, and a church committee person. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a Gold Star Mother. In her retirement years, Thelma enjoyed gardening, painting, traveling, and fishing. She spent many hours fishing and relaxing at East Okoboji at the cabin of her close friend, Arline Gans.

Larry Leonard "Horse" Patten

Larry “Horse” Leonard Patten, the son of Duane J. and Marlis J. (Herbst) Patten, was born on July 19, 1957, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended the Harlan Community Schools. On May 11, 1974, Horse married Tami Ann Holzer in Lohraville, Iowa. They remained very close friends. In 1977, Larry entered the United States Marine Corps; he served his country for three years.
For several years, Horse worked around the United States as a foreman for underground cable construction and road construction crews. Most recently, he worked for Cogdill Farm Supply in Panama, Iowa.

Horse enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially like to spend time with his dog, Lucas.

Larry L. Patten died on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 51 years, 3 months, and 17 days.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, and one sister-in-law, Sandy Patten. He is survived by three daughters, Billie Jo (Steve) Thompson of Harlan, Iowa, Lisa Patten of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Diane (Brian) Baxter of Harlan, Iowa; his mother, Marlis Patten of Harlan, Iowa; four brothers, Steven Patten of Harlan, Iowa, Garry Patten of Magnolia, Texas, Ronald (Gena) Patten of Conroe, Texas, and Danny (Faye) Patten of Earling, Iowa; one sister, Jane (Dennis) Olson of Des Moines, Iowa; his former wife, Tami Patten of Harlan, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Curtis Dean Petersen, 57, the son of Arnold K. Petersen and Eleanor Annabel (Andersen) Petersen, was born November 9, 1950 in Audubon County, Iowa. He was a graduate of the Elk Horn, Iowa Senior High School, Class of 1969. He later graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, with a degree in Agriculture Education. Curtis had lived in Elk Horn, Menlo and Anita, Iowa, prior to moving to Newton, Iowa in 1987. He was employed as a Senior Vice President of the First Newton National Bank

Curtis had devoted his life to his family and friends, and attended the First Lutheran Church in Newton. He was a member of the Iowa Bankers Association, Jasper County Extension Council and on the Board of Directors for Capstone. He enjoyed his family, gardening, yard work, the outdoors, and woodworking.

Curtis died Wednesday morning, October 29, 2008 at his home in Newton. He was preceded in death by his mother, Annabel; step-brother Jamie Doonan; and step-sister Linda Ahrenholtz.

Those left to honor the memory of Curtis include his sons: Michael Petersen of West Des Moines, Iowa and Matthew (Marisa) Petersen of Ankeny, Iowa; daughter Megan (John Vladea) Petersen of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren: Karenna and Brendan Petersen; his father and step-mother: Arnold (Loretta) Petersen of Elk Horn, Iowa; his brother Allan (Carol) Petersen of Elk Horn; sister Deloris (Butch) Nelsen of Ankeny; his very special friend Louise "Lou" Warnick of Newton; his step-sisters: Denise (Dennis) Juhl of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jane (Dean) Fabian of Elk Horn and Ann (Chuck) Wolken of Harlan, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and his many good neighbors and friends.

Robert K. Petersen, age 85, of Council Bluffs passed away September 28, 2008, at his home.

Robert was born September 18, 1923, in Green Castle, Missouri to the late Nels and Marie (Nielsen) Petersen. At the age of one he moved with his family to Macedonia, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1942. After helping his father farm for 3 years, he moved to Atlantic, Iowa and worked for Earl May. He started working construction when they added onto the light plant. Robert stayed in construction working for Winger Construction. In 1952 he married Erna Barker and they moved to Council Bluffs. Robert joined the union and worked for Weibe Construction. He was vice president for 9 years before starting his own company, Petersen Construction Company. Robert retired at the age of 77. He was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church.

Robert was preceded in death by his sister, Annie Henry; brothers, Victor and Henry Petersen.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Erna Petersen of Council Bluffs; stepdaughters, Jackie Andersen and husband Roger of Elk Horn, Iowa, Janet Berger of Audubon, Iowa; stepsons, Connie L. Barker and wife Dorcee of Fort Mohave, Ariz., Gary L. A celebration of life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 at Harlan Seventh-Day Adventist Church with inurnment at the Harlan Cemetery following the service, and a reception at the Settle Inn in Harlan at 4 p.m.

A man who was shot near 86th and Q Streets died Saturday, and a second shooting victim remained in critical condition, Omaha police said.

Police said Timothy C. Potts, 31, died at the Nebraska Medical Center.

A second shooting victim, Mario I. Beltran-Rodriguez, 26, of Omaha went to Bergan Mercy Medical Center by private vehicle. Police said the man was in critical condition.

Police responded at 10:34 p.m. Friday to the Citadel Apartments and Townhomes, where they found a man lying in the street with a gunshot wound.

Markeis Townsell, 24, who lives near the Citadel Apartments, said he was returning from the grocery store when he saw a group huddled around an injured man lying facedown.

"I think they were trying to help him," he said.

Police had made no arrests and not identified any suspects.

Fatal shooting casts pall over Citadel Apartments

Twenty hours after the killing, the signs of violence were still evident Saturday in the building on the southwest corner of the sprawling Citadel Apartments and Townhomes complex near 84th and Q Streets in Omaha.

A large piece of plywood had replaced glass that had been shot out of a door. A window next to it had two large holes with cracks extending out like spider webs. And fingerprint powder still stuck to doors and windows upstairs.

"This was a nice, calm, area until this happened," said a building resident, whose door had been pierced by a bullet just above the lock. He feared for his safety and did not want to be identified.

Police on Saturday continued to investigate the Friday night shooting, which left one man dead and another seriously wounded. They did not announce any arrests.

Timothy C. Potts, 31, died Saturday at the Nebraska Medical Center. Initial radio reports from the scene indicated that he had been shot in the chest. The other victim, Mario I. Beltran-Rodriguez, 26, was taken to Bergan Mercy Medical Center by private vehicle. He was in critical but stable condition late Saturday night.

The shooting was reported at 10:34 p.m. Authorities released few details about what may have led to it.

They did not have a current address for Potts; the last known one was in Plattsmouth, said Officer Michael Pecha, an Omaha police spokesman. Beltran-Rodriguez was listed as having a south Omaha address.

Olga Cuevas, 22, and her 4-month-old son were watching the animated movie "Brother Bear" in her third-floor apartment Friday night when, from the hallway, she heard an argument, a scream and a thud, as if somebody had kicked the wall.

Fifteen minutes later, two gunshots roared from the hallway. She grabbed her baby.

"I got so scared," she said. "I ran to my room and got inside the closet."

Another resident said she thought she had heard two shots from the hallway and three from outside the building. Like the man with the bullet hole in his door, she did not want her name published, fearing for her safety.

What occurred next was unclear. But Markeis Townsell, who lives nearby, later said he saw a man lying in the main street of the complex, roughly 400 feet from the building. Several people appeared to be trying to help him.

Saturday evening, parts of the complex were still sealed off by police tape. Returning from an errand, Cuevas and her boyfriend walked through the entrance with the wrecked door, stepped over shards of glass and walked past the two police officers standing in the hallway outside their apartment.

"It's kind of scary," she said. "I feel so insecure now."

Iowa man's truck-driving dream ends with fatal gunshot

Debra Hawkins is having a hard time trying to explain her son's absence to his faithful dog, Anka.

The 2-year-old German shepherd spends a big part of each day staring out the front window watching for her owner, Timothy C. Potts, to return to their Defiance, Iowa, home. Potts lived there with his mother and stepfather, Howard Hawkins.

Potts, 31, died Friday night at the Nebraska Medical Center after he was shot about 10:30 p.m. at the Citadel Apartments and Townhomes near 86th and Q Streets.

A memorial service for the former Bellevue West student is still being planned, his mother said.

A second shooting victim, Mario I. Beltran-Rodriguez, 26, of Omaha went to Bergan Mercy Medical Center by private vehicle. A hospital spokeswoman said he remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Police have made no arrests and have not identified any suspects.

Hawkins said her son had a history of trouble with the law as a young man but recently obtained his commercial driver's license. He planned to take over his stepfather's semitrailer truck and work as an over-the-road trucker.

"He studied three weeks on his own and got his CDL license without any special training," Debra Hawkins said. "He was always reading. His room is full of books, especially on history and politics"

Hawkins said she last talked to her son about 10 p.m. the night of his death.

"When I talked to him, he was sober and doing fine," she said. "He went to visit somebody and he ended up dead."

Having a family and earning his commercial license seemed to energize Potts after two stints in prison, his mother said. At 18, Potts received a five-year sentence in Nebraska for second-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon.

A few years later, Potts was sentenced to six years in an Iowa prison for possession of methamphetamine, his mother said.

"I'm not saying he was perfect by any means because he had been in trouble with the law," Debra Hawkins said. "Tim could be talked into going along on something, and if that's what happened, he paid for it."

Bob Gubbels of Farm Service Cooperative in Defiance knew Potts had a criminal history but gave him a chance to work last fall. Potts delivered fertilizer and anhydrous ammonia until the winter snows came.

"I was just getting ready to give him a call to see if he wanted to get back to work," Gubbels said. "Tim did a good job from start to finish for us. He really cared about his work and was very dependable."

Potts' girlfriend, Terri Westenberger, 30, of Omaha, last saw him Christmas night when he visited their 6-year-old daughter, Angelina. The couple hoped to marry next year.

Westenberger and Hawkins agreed that Angelina had a big influence over Potts.

"She was the best thing in his life," Westenberger said. "He was a really good father to Angelina. He loved her more than anything."

Potts is also survived by two brothers and two sisters.

Franklin “Fraz” Christian Rasmussen, the son of Hans Christian and Lula (Boeck) Rasmussen, was born on January 16, 1934, in Harlan, Iowa. Franklin was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. He attended Elementary and High School in Harlan, graduating in 1952.
In 1953, Franklin enlisted in the Marine Corps; he was discharged in 1956. He returned home to help his father with the family business, the Harlan Cement Works. Franklin purchased the business from his father when he retired. In 2000, Franklin's son, Mark, who had worked at the Cement Works since age 14, purchased the business from his father. In the 1980’s, Franklin and Bill Brower worked together to build homes in the Harlan area.

In 1957, Franklin was married to Doris Dalrymple. Two children, Mark and Erik, were born to this union. On January 21, 1989, Franklin married Donna Marie Williams at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Franklin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, where he had served as treasurer. He was also active with the Boy Scouts. Franklin, along with Ed Swank and Jerry Lytle, founded Concerned, Inc. in Harlan. This service began in a small house on Eighth Street in Harlan. It was later relocated to a new building on Willow Street, and now is located on Industrial Parkway. He loved to fish in Missouri and Canada, and enjoyed traveling with Donna.

Franklin C. Rasmussen died on Monday, October 6, 2008, in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 74 years, 8 months, and 20 days.

Franklin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bob Rasmussen; and one sister, Karlene Rasmussen. He is survived by his wife, Donna (Williams) Rasmussen of Harlan, Iowa; two sons, Mark Rasmussen of Harlan, Iowa, and Erik Rasmussen of Glenwood, Iowa; two grandchildren, Matthew Rasmussen of Harlan, Iowa, and Katie Ann Rasmussen of Ames, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Chellew of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Serving as honorary bearers were Mark Hervey, Chris Whitaker, Ron Mathiasen, Gary Murray, Byron Christensen, and Larry Reep. Military rites were provided by the Harlan VFW Post #941 and the Helmer Reyelt AL Post #150. Burial of ashes was in the Harlan Cemetery. Debra Lee Rounds was born to Gerald and Alma (Rau) Kramer on December 4, 1955,
in Carroll, Iowa. She was baptized at Saint Anthony's Hospital on the day of her birth
after arriving two months early: she was not expected to survive the night. She lived in
Wiota, Iowa, until she was four years old, when the family moved to Marne, Iowa, to a
farm. She attended school in Marne until moving to Harlan, Iowa, in 1965. She attended
school in Harlan and graduated with the Class of 1974.

Debbie was united in marriage to Robert Glenn Rounds on Groundhog's Day,
February 2, 1974, in Harlan, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Jeremy, Marcus,
Sarah, and Lynzie.

Debbie worked at Mickel's Restaurant for nine years before going to CDS. She held
several different positions in her twenty-six years at CDS, the most recent being a
batcher. She was a radio station DJ for KNOD on the weekends for four and a half years.
She took medical leave from both jobs in 2005.

She committed her life to Jesus on December 28, 2002, and in March of 2003, Debbie
was baptized at First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa.

Debbie had many activities through the years: coaching and playing women's
softball, co-ed softball, and co-ed volleyball. She loved bingo, camping, eating out with
friends, and monthly cousin outings. Debbie also had a love for great Motown music. Her
greatest accomplishment was being a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Debbie was known for her unending optimism, her catchy smile, and for making
friends wherever she went.

She died at her home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, December, 31,
2008, having attained the age of fifty-three years and twenty-seven days. She was
preceded in death by her father, Gerald Kramer, brother-in-law Marcus Rounds, sister-in-
law Leona Parks, father-in-law Marcus Rounds, mother-in-law Ella Rounds, and nephew
Jay Rounds.

Debbie is survived by her husband of thirty-five years, Robert Rounds of Harlan,
Iowa; her children: Jeremy Rounds and his wife Angie of Creston, Iowa, Marcus Rounds
of San Diego, California, Sarah Rounds of Omaha, Nebraska, and Lynzie Rounds of Council
Bluffs; four grandchildren: Mark, Alexis, Hannah Joy, and Ethan, all of Creston; mother
Alma and step-father Paul Bissen of Harlan; sisters: Sandy and her husband Dave Hopper
of Carroll, Iowa, Geralyn Ratslaff of Mason City, Iowa, and Tami and her husband Alan

Russell M. Sandbothe, Sr. - Age 71

Russell Michael Sandbothe, Sr., son of Steven John and Barbara Agnus (Pauley) Sandbothe, was born on June 23, 1937, at the RR farmhouse in Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama and attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama.

In 1956, Russell enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country for two years. In 1958, he was honorably discharged.

On April 8, 1961, Russell was united in marriage to Karen Lee Jensen at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. The couple moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Russell worked two jobs at a time to support his new family, including working at Firestone and Wilson Packing House. In 1965, Russell and his family moved back to Panama where he began farming and continued to work at Wilson Packing House.

After leaving Wilson Packing House, Russell began driving truck where he enjoyed seeing some of the country. He always enjoyed sharing his traveling memories with his children and grandchildren.

In 1976, Russell and Karen went their separate ways but still remained close throughout the years.

In the mid-1980's Russell sold the farm and moved to Nebraska where he became interested in scraping and worked as a Laborer for Local 1140 Labor Union. He remained in Nebraska for about ten years before he moved back to Iowa where he continued his scraping interest.

When Russell wasn’t busy working, he enjoyed playing cards and going to auctions and sales. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Russell never really retired because he could always be found tinkering with sales and scraps

Russell was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Earling Council No. 1741, of Earling, Iowa, and the Panama Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a parishioner of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama.

Russell was found at his home on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, having attained the age of seventy-one years and four months. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Bernice Klindt.

He is survived by his children: Beverly Jean Sandbothe and her significant other Thomas E. Turgeon of Omaha, Nebraska; Russell Michael Sandbothe, II and his significant other Becky Forman of Denison, Iowa; four grandchildren: Christopher William Lee Thomas Dougherty, MaryEllen Elizabeth Turgeon, Harley Starr-Lynn Turgeon, and Savannah Makayla Turgeon all of Omaha, Nebraska; his former wife Karen Lee Jensen of Denison; his brother Vernon J. Sandbothe and his wife Mary of Atlantic, Iowa; and his sisters: Clara Smith of Kansas City, Missouri; Mary Wright of Magnolia, Texas; and Bonnie Ferguson of Independence, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Serving has honorary pallbearers were: Christopher W.L.T. Doughtery, MaryEllen Elizabeth Turgeon, Harley Starr-Lynn Turgeon, and Savannah Makayla Turgeon. Highlands Ranch man dies in rollover crash on E470

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a rollover accident that claimed the life of a Highlands Ranch man.

Minutes after midnight on Dec. 1, the Colorado State Patrol was called to mile marker 7 on the northbound side of E 470.

They found Douglas J. Schaben, 39, lying near his silver 2008 Toyota Tacoma.

He was taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital, where he died of his injuries, the patrol said.

From what the patrol can reconstruct, Schaben was driving north on the tollway when he drove off the roadway to the right, and struck a delineator post alongside the road.

The Tacoma turned clockwise and rolled over twice, ejecting him through the driver’s side window.

Doug is the son of Dennis & Carol (Assmann) Schaben;
Grandson of Lillian (Kramer) Schaben and the late Leo "Jack" Schaben; and the late Ferdinand and Cecelia (Franck) Assmann.

Gerald Robert Schafer was born on March 23, 1928 to Nick and Theresia (Behrendt) Schafer at their home in Panama, Gerald completed 12 years of Catholic education in May of 1946. He worked for local businesses until joining his brother Nick in an Egg and Cream Business. He was married to Ethel Christina Mahlberg (Leo and Anna (Muell) Mahlberg) of Panama at St. Mary’s Church on June 20th, 1949. They spent all but one year on Panama and that was when he apprenticed for Kloewer Plumbing. He worked at Panama Oil and many local farmers. Gerald owned Panama Produce and Schafer's Cafe before becoming a truck driver for many years in the area retiring finally in 2002.

Gerald was a lifetime member of the St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. He was a fireman since he was 16. He is a past president of Community Club, founding member of the Panama Athletic Association and the Rosman-Glendale County Golf course. He was a long time member of Panama Community Chorus. He was also a two sport athlete as a long time town team basketball player and played semi-pro baseball for among others the Harlan Cardinals.

Gerald died on Sunday, November 30, 2008, at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 80 years, eight months and seven days.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel in 1990; one sister, Verna Stinn; and one brother, Nick Schafer, Jr. He is survived by his seven children, Robert (Michelle) Schafer, Cape Coral, FL, William (Kathy) Schafer, Panama, IA, Deb (Russ) Tremel, Woodbine, IA, Barry (Mary) Schafer San Antonio, TX, June (Bill) Hastert Westphalia, IA, Joy (Jeff) Schaben, Westphalia, IA & Amy Schafer (Craig Rau), Portsmouth, IA; 18 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one brother, Dan (Norma) Schafer, Loveland, CO; and many other relatives and many, many friends. Since the death of his wife in 1990, he had two special friends, Theola Theulen of Earling and Evelyn Alvis of Woodbine. Jerry will be remembered for his humor, his friendship and his love of his family.

LaRoyce C. Shepard, 83 of Loveland, Colorado died on December 18, 2008. He was born on November 19, 1925 in Pisgah, Iowa to parents Samuel B and Eva F. (Henderson) Shepard. He graduated from Defiance High School in Iowa in 1943. L.C. married Doris L. Razee on July 26, 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska. L. C. was a nursing home administrator for 30 years. The couple moved to Loveland in 1986. L. C. was a full time caregiver to his wife, Doris for her last 15 years. Doris died in December 11, 2001.

L. C. became a born again Christian in 1949. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Loveland. L. C. enjoyed elk hunting.

L. C. was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris, three brothers, Dwayne, Cloyce and Lyle Shepard and an infant daughter Connie Lee. He is survived by his three children, Stephen Shepard and his wife Donna of Loveland, Colorado, Lance Shepard and his wife Janetta of Louisville, Colorado and Becky and her husband Tom Burns of Pikeville, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Leisha Jon (Johnson) Smith, 47, of Elk Horn, Iowa passed on to be with her Lord, following a courageous battle with cancer, at the Elk Horn Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, on October 24, 2008.

Leisha was born the daughter of W.L. “John” and Nancy (McElroy) Johnson in Fort Worth, TX on December 29th, 1960. She lived most of her life in Iowa; however, growing up she lived in California, South Carolina, and Missouri also.

Her survivors are her children: John Ryan Cannon and wife Dana of Newton, Aaron Ihnken of Atlantic; her grandson Ethan Simmons of Atlantic; father W. L. "John" Johnson of Elk Horn; brother Rev. Mike Miller and wife Carolyn of Taiwan and their three daughters and one son; sister Jan Smith and husband David of Baton Rouge, LA and their two children; and sister Sheila Bintner and her children Elijah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Madeline, Abigail and Gabriella, all of Brayton; and her son Nate Potts and wife Carrie and children, Trey, Aiden and Anna, all of Elk Horn; her fiancé Jason Yager of Gretna, NE; aunt Kate of Indianola, aunt Betty and uncle Edward of Fortworth, TX, uncle Bill Graham and wife Jackie of Newton; uncle Duane Johnson of Kansas City, KS, uncle Donnie Johnson of Florida and numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Ethel Beulah, daughter of Nels A. and Carrie (Mattson) Nelson was born May 2, 1915 at Fiscus, Iowa. She attended country school near her home in Guthrie County. Ethel then worked in Omaha, Nebraska at Wilson Packing.

On February 7, 1946 Ethel was united in marriage with Jake T. Smouse at the Gospel Tabernacle in Omaha by Rev. R.R. Brown. A daughter, Donna, was born into this union. Ethel and Jake made their home in Coon Rapids, Iowa, where they owned and operated Smouse Jewelry Store until their retirement in 1983.

As a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ethel was active in leading group meetings and in the offices of the secretary and treasurer. She was also a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge.

In 2001, Ethel became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. She died there on November 14, 2008 at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 12 days.

Besides her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by a grandson Jacob "Jake" Hughes; sister Helen Brumback; and brothers John, Art, Clarence and Sam Nelson.

She is survived by her husband Jake Smouse of Coon Rapids; daughter Donna and husband Charly Hughes of Story City; granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Hughes of Gilbert, Arizona; great-granddaughter Kelsey Hughes; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Eldron J. "Sam" Stangl, age 81, of Neola passed away December 24, 2008.

Sam was born September 21, 1927, in Dedham, Iowa to Albert G. and Elizabeth Hoffman Stangl. He attended St. Joe's School in Neola and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Sam worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as the signal maintainer and married wife Jane on November 26, 1960. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Neola American Legion, Signal Maintainers Union and served for over twenty years on the Neola Fire and Rescue.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jane in 1993; brothers, Joseph, Casey and Kenneth Stangl; and sister Marietta Groat.

Survivors include daughters, Bev Stangl of Neola, Donna Raygor and husband Tom of Council Bluffs; sons, Mark and wife Dolores, Tony all of Neola; eight grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Jolene Wetmore of Council Bluffs, Kay Schechinger; brother, Warren "Punchy" both of Harlan; nieces and nephews.

Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 in Harlan. Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9 at
10:30 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan
Cemetery. A prayer service was held Monday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at
Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan. Friends were asked to call

Dagny Amalia (Swensen) Svendsen

Dagny Amalia Svendsen, the daughter of Christian and JoHanna (Jensen)
Swensen, was born on October 31, 1911, in Denmark. At the age of two, she
came to the United States with her parents. After attending country school
through the eighth grade, Dagny worked as a hired girl for area familes. On
October 31, 1932, Dagny married Wilbert Svendsen in Botna, Iowa, northeast
of Irwin, Iowa. From 1941-61, the couple farmed east of Kirkman, Iowa.
Following their farm sale, Dagny and Wilbert moved to Harlan, Iowa. Dagny
worked for the Harlan Community School’s lunch program from 1964-77, and
served as the program director for several years. Wilbert died on March 17,
2002. Dagny later became a resident of the Elk Horn Lutheran Home in Elk
Horn, Iowa.

Dagny was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. She had
previously taught Sunday School at Bethel Baptist Church, and served on the
Women’s Missionary Fellowship. Dagny enjoyed spending time crocheting
afghans for family members, and was an avid Harlan sports fan. She and
Wilbert liked to travel, and had once visited Hawaii.

Dagny A. Svendsen died on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Myrtue Medical
Center in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 96 years, 10 months, and 6
days.

Dagny was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilbert Svendsen;
one brother, Norman “Rocky” Swensen; and one sister, Christina Johnson. She
is survived by three sons, Elliott (Ardis) Svendsen of Harlan, Iowa, Rev.
Larry (Janice) Svendsen of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Keith (Cheryl) Svendsen
of Loveland, Colorado; one daughter, Carol (John) Stoll of Coralville, Iowa;
one brother, Donald (JoAnn) Swensen of Bellevue, Nebraska; five sisters, Ina
Carroll of Jewell, Iowa, Violet (Wayne) Fiscus of Harlan, Iowa, Mae Heileg

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at the Grace
Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Larry Svendsen and Rev. Steven
Svendsen officiating. Casket bearers were Doug Svendsen, Steve Svendsen,
Bradley Svendsen, Darren Svendsen, Roland Svendsen, Ryan Stoll, Christopher
Stoll, and Nathaniel Stoll. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan,
Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of the
arrangements.

Marion E. Thomas (nee Lund), age 99, of Peoria, Ariz., passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2008.

She was born in Council Bluffs, and was the last surviving graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1927. She married Otis Thomas in 1929, celebrating 62 years together. She was very active in Eastern Star where she was Worthy Matron and also a representative for the state of Iowa. Marion was also an accomplished artist, creating beautiful oil paintings.

Her husband, Otis; daughters, Shirley and Sharon; granddaughter, Sharolyn, preceded her in death.

She is survived by three daughters, Beverley Loseke, of Cary, N.C.; Sally Kloostra (Harlan) and Barbara Winters (Jack), both of Sun City, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held October 31st, at the Silver City Cemetery, in Silver City, Iowa. Persons wanting to attend will meet at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home, 545 Willow Avenue, Council Bluffs, at 9:45 a.m., leaving at 10 a.m., to proceed to the cemetery.

HARLAN -- Elva Jeannette White, 93, Harlan, died Friday, Sept. 5 at Elm
Crest Retirement Community. Services were held Monday, Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m.
at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.
White is survived by nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Elva J. White - Age 93

Elva Jeanette White was born on September 27, 1914 to Milton and Myrtle
(Edwards) Blair in Harlan, Iowa.

She spent her entire life in Harlan, graduating from Harlan High School
in 1931 and then working in the office of the superintendent of schools
until her marriage.

On September 16, 1939, Elva was united in marriage to Glee White at the
Methodist parsonage in Forest City, Iowa. They made their home in Harlan and
enjoyed thirty-seven years together before Glee’s sudden death in 1977.
During these years Elva was a secretary in the Federal Land Bank office and
also for the law firm of Jake and Keith More.

She was a member of the Harlan First United Methodist Church since
childhood, a member of United Methodist Women, the Myrtue Memorial Hospital
and auxiliary, and the Harlan Friday Club.

She enjoyed knitting and made everything from baby booties to jackets.
She was proud of her roses at the house and loved her terriers: Tiny and
Midge. At one time she inherited a labrador named Hap from a neighbor
because the dog kept coming back to Elva’s house and they finally gave it to
her.

Elva became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in November of
2007. It was there that she died on Friday, September 5, 2008, having
attained the age of ninety-three years, eleven months, and nine days. She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glee, her sisters: June
Sorensen and Lela Mueller and her brothers Percy Blair and Loren Blair.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, other family members,
and friends.

A funeral service was held on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Pauley
Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Dave Swinton officiating the
10:30 AM service. Casket bearers were Milton Mueller, Ron Sedlak, Tom
Pansing, Robert Blair, Dar Lund, and Bill Lemons. Interment was held at the
Harlan Cemetery.

August 14, 1926 - October 3, 2008

Gertrude June Lesher Cross Will was born August 14, 1926, on the family farm, three miles west of Clarion, Iowa, to Lawrence Hauman and Bernice Christina (Bubeck) Lesher. She attended country school in Dayton Township, went to Clarion (Iowa) High School, and graduated in 1943. Gertrude worked in the high school office for Mr. Christensen and in the Courthouse. She later went to Des Moines, Iowa, to work for a cosmetic company, and in 1945, she moved to Denver, Colorado.

In 1946, Gertrude returned to Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she earned a teacher’s certificate. Gertrude met True Aldrian Cross in Cedar Falls and they were married on March 20, 1954, in the First United Methodist Church in Clarion.

True and Gertrude had three children, Thomas, Randall and Kathryn. They operated a crop and dairy farm business, milking up to 190 Jersey cows at the operation west of Cedar Falls, and crop farming locations south of Cedar Falls and Waterloo, Iowa. Gertrude was part of the farm venture, working in the small calf nursery and dairy operations. Gertrude also worked seven years for the Waterloo Probationary Court as a technical secretary.

Gertrude’s husband, T.A., preceded her in death on November 30, 1986. She met and married Delbert Will of Irwin, Iowa. Delbert was a crop and livestock farmer and they eventually retired, traveled and moved into Irwin. Delbert died in 2001.

Gertrude was an active member of the Irwin Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Library Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Shelby County Garden Club, and the Ladies Missionary Society.

Gertrude J. Will died on October 3, 2008, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, having reached the age of 82 years, 1 month, and 19 days.

Preceding Gertrude in death were her parents; her husbands, T.A. Cross and Delbert Will; and two brothers, Melvin Lesher and Orville Lesher. She is survived by three children, Thomas (Rebecca) Cross of South Beloit, Illinois, Randall Cross of Waterloo, Iowa, and Kathryn Morris of New Virginia, Iowa; one sister, Beulah Lesher of Iowa; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at the Irwin Church of Christ in Irwin, Iowa, with Pastor Ted Sieck officiating. Burial of ashes took place in Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin. Yates, Wayne Arlo September 13, 1921 - April 16, 2008

Wayne Arlo Yates, the son of Richard and Ellen Hite Yates, was born on September 13, 1921 in Red Oak, Iowa. He graduated from Harlan High School in 1941. After graduation Wayne enlisted into the United States Army on October 7, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the European Theater from December 16, 1943 until his return to the States in July of 1945. He was Honorably discharged from the Army in September of 1945.

Wayne was united in marriage to Phyllis Krieger on June 15, 1947 in Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union one son Steven was born. Wayne worked as a type setter at the Journal Herald in Avoca for over twenty-five years. He enjoyed gardening, dominoes; especially growing tomatoes; building bird houses; baseball, horse racing and football. Wayne moved to Elm Crest in October 2007. He enjoyed visiting with his many friends.

Wayne died on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-six years, seven months and three days. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife (Phyllis) Elaine and his sister Delores Andersen.

Survivors include his son Steven and his wife Korla of Avoca, Iowa; two grandchildren: Kamie and her husband Kenny of Harlan and Mike and Erin of Avoca; four great grandchildren: Martin and Jessica; Adryan and Lauren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 18, 2008 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca with Pastor Jeff Erlemeier officiating. Military rites by Fred Funston Post #277 were held at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca. Those serving as casket bearers were Dan Rihner, Jeff Schoemann, David Rihner, Randy Smyser, Charlie Ronnfeldt and Wayne Martin.
