Glenda Rosalie, age 88, died suddenly and unexpectedly at her home in Elk Horn
on Thursday, August 28, 2008.
She was born September 3, 1919 to Antony and Katie (Eskov) Jensen, in Clay
Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She attended Clay #2 country school and Elk Horn
Public School. On July 11, 1942, Glenda was united in marriage with Clifford
Andersen and five children were born to this union. The family lived around the
Elk Horn area in several locations before settling in Elk Horn. Glenda owned and
operated the Elk Café in Elk Horn and worked at the Salem Lutheran Home for 34
years until her retirement. She earned her G.E.D. as an adult when her children
were young. Glenda was a member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church. She was always
smiling and she enjoyed gardening, volleyball, Frisbee golf and playing the
piano. She enjoyed good health and was able to live on her own even after the
death of her husband in 1998.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; grandson, Jeff Patten;
great-grandson Chad Sevey; two sisters, Mildred Andersen and Evelyn Hansen; and
two sons-in-law, Larry Leslie and Russ Patten.
Glenda is survived by her five children, Sharon Leslie and Mike Siderewicz of
Minden, Jim Andersen and wife Mona of Georgetown, Texas, Donna Patten of
Hastings, Neb.; Avis and husband Dave Fuller of The Woodlands, Texas and Ron
Andersen and wife Pat of Council Bluffs; numerous grandchildren;
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother, Maynard Jensen and
wife Rose Marie of Kimballton; brothers-in-law, Elmer Andersen of Avoca and Dale
Andersen of Atlantic; sisters-in-law, Millie Eskov of Elk Horn and Leila Mae and
husband Lloyd Nelsen of Kimballton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 11:00 a.m., at the Elk Horn
Lutheran Church, Elk Horn, Iowa.

here, she was a former Defiance resident. Visitation is Thursday, July 10 from 8
a.m. - 9 p.m. Wake service will be at 7 p.m. that same evening all at Pauley
Jones Funeral Home, Harlan. Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery. Services are
Friday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Defiance with
burial in the Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery. She is survived by son Jack Wageman,

Elizabeth Emma Booth, the daughter of Emil William and Emma Christina (Pieper)
Stuhr, was born on February 23, 1918, in Minden, Iowa. She graduated from
Tennant (Iowa) High School in 1936, and from Nebraska Methodist Hospital as a
registered nurse (RN) in 1941. She first practiced nursing at the Red Oak (Iowa)
Hospital, and later spent many years as a nurse at Myrtue Medical Center in
Harlan, Iowa.
On October 5, 1968, Elizabeth married Nathaniel Pierce Booth in Harlan. He died
on April 30, 1977, in Carroll, Iowa.
Elizabeth was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan,
Iowa. She enjoyed cooking, reading, sewing, and taking walks. She loved nature
and visiting with family members.
Elizabeth Emma Booth died on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at the Avoca Nursing and
Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 13 days.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nathaniel P. Booth;
and one infant brother. She is survived by one brother, Robert E. (Betty) Stuhr
of Shelby, Iowa; three nieces; one nephew; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 18, 2008, at the
Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Donna Ewert of the
Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan officiating. Casket bearers
were Rich Stuhr, Brad Hayner, Dix Scranton, Dan Manhart, and Paul Stuhr. Burial
was in the Minden Cemetery in Minden, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral
Home in Harlan was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorial services for Douglas "Doug" Christensen, age 83, of Avera Holy Family
Health in Estherville, and formerly of Audubon and Harlan, were held Tuesday,
June 24, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with Pastor Lynn A.
Potter officiating. Military rites were by VFW POST 3388 and American Legion
Post 91 of Estherville. The Henry-Olson Funeral Home in Estherville was in
charge of arrangements.
Douglas Harmon Christensen, the son of Thomas and Martha (Rold) Christensen, was
born Sept. 4, 1924, in Harlan, and died Friday, June 20, 2008, at Avera Holy
Family Health in Estherville.
He received his education in the Harlan schools, graduating from Harlan High
School. After graduating from high school Doug attended Iowa State University in
Ames, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree. He served in the United
States Army during World War II in Calcutta, India. He remained in the United
States Army Reserve and returned to military duty in the Korean Conflict.
After his honorable discharge from military duty in 1951, Doug returned to
Manson, where he taught veteran farmers on the GI Bill. On Nov. 29, 1951, he was
united in marriage to Joann Thomas in Manson. The couple lived for a time in
Spirit Lake, Waverly and Audubon, before moving to Estherville in 1983, where
they purchased and operated Paris Cleaners until they retired. In his leisure
time Doug was an avid reader. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and
growing roses. Doug was well known as an avid story teller and as everyone knew,
he was a huge Iowa State University fan and supporter.
Doug was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville. He was
also a lifetime member of Estherville VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91
in Estherville. Doug also belonged to the North Star Masonic Lodge and the Elks
Lodge, both in Estherville.schroedermemorialchapel.com.
Preceding Doug in death were an infant son, Charles; his parents and sisters,
Arlene Christensen and Muriel Olsen.
Surviving are his wife, Joann of Estherville; his four children, Susan Dickman
and her husband, Ira of West Des Moines; Linda Siver and her husband, Tom of
Milford; Carol Heuton and her husband, Randy of Albert City; Craig Christensen
and his wife, Melanie of McAllen, Texas; six grandchildren, Bill Maples
(Stephanie Tang), Rick (Pathana) Maples, Jina (Ron) Vandervort, Nick
Christensen, Cassidy (Travis) Hatland, Joel Broich; and four
great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Jaylan, Taylor Vandervort, Addison Hatland; many
more relatives; and a host of good friends.

Paul Peter Eischeid, son of William and Bernadine (Dalhoff) Eischeid was born
August 3, 1922 in Carroll, Iowa. Paul graduated from St. Paul High School in
Defiance, Iowa in 1940.
On October 18, 1958 he was married to Betty Inez Lux at Holy Family Catholic
Church in Lidderdale, Iowa by Frather Robert Philips. He worked for his father
in the Eischeid Grocery in Defiance, Iowa from 1937-1951. He worked for the
Carroll Times Herald in the advertising department from 1953-1986. Paul was a
member of the Holy Spirit Parish and a Honorary Life Member of the Carroll
Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golf, bowling, and a game of horse shoes.
Paul died early Wednesday morning, July 16, 2008, at St. Anthony Hospital in
Carroll.
Paul is survived by his wife Betty of Carroll, a brother-in-law Fred Kaus of
Carroll and a niece and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Irma M. Kaus and a brother
Alver Eischeid, in infancy.

Marcus Paul Esser was born December 9, 1919, to Herman and Katherine (Bissen)
Esser. Marcus attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Earling, Iowa. Marcus
proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII from 1942 to
1946. Marcus married Sophia Brandt on April 28, 1953 at St. Rose of Lima in
Denison, Iowa. The couple farmed and had dairy cows southwest of Woodbine.
Marcus was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling,
horseshoes and countless games of cards. Marcus loved spending time with his
family.
Marcus died on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs,
Iowa attaining the age of 88 years, six months, and 16 days.
Marcus was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings, Alex, Tony,
Sylvan, Cletus, Ivo, and Herman Esser, Marcella Kaufmann and Modesta Creager. He
is survived by his wife, Sophia Esser of Woodbine, Iowa; seven children, Denise
(Thomas) Reinig of Portsmouth, Iowa, Debra (Steve) Karman of Hixon, Tennessee,

Richard Hemmingsen, 72, of Marne, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at
his home.
Richard was born on April 24, 1936, at his parents’ home southeast of Elk Horn
in Shelby County, Iowa. He was the son of Peter and Elsie (Peterson) Hemmingsen.
Peter and Elsie were Danish immigrants moving from Mon, Denmark, to New York in
1928, then in 1929 they moved to Elk Horn, Iowa, and started farming.
Richard attended country school and graduated from Audubon High School in 1955.
On May 16, 1959, he married Caroline Johnson at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic
Church in Atlantic, Iowa. They lived in Elk Horn and the Marne area until moving
to their current farm near Marne in 1972.
Richard drove a truck for various people in the Elk Horn area. He started
farming with his dad and continued farming with his son until his health
prevented it.
He was a former member of the Marne Volunteer Fire Department and a current
member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic.
Richard enjoyed fishing and dancing in his earlier years and didn’t turn down an
opportunity to listen to Polka music. He was quite handy and enjoyed fixing
things or just tinkering around. He liked watching the Baseball World Series on
television, whether it was the Cubs or St. Louis Cardinals. Richard was an easy
going person who liked to tease and humor others. Most of all Richard loved the
time he spent with his family.
Richard is survived by his wife, Caroline of Marne, Iowa; and his son, Rodney
Hemmingsen and his wife, Patti, and their children, Trey and Zachary of Marne,
Iowa; sister-in-law, LaVila Nielsen, and her husband Dale, of Johnston, Iowa;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Elsie Hemmingsen and his
parents-in-law, Arnold and Frances Johnson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2008,
at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa.
Burial will be in the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2008, with the
family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service at 6:00
p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.

LOLA MAE JIPSEN
Lola Mae Jipsen, age 95, formerly of Atlantic, passed away July 29, 2008 at
Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, Iowa, where she had been a resident for
several years.
Lola was born July 20, 1913 to Harry and Daisy (Brown) Moore in Atlantic, Iowa.
She grew up in Wiota where she attended school and graduated from the Wiota High
School. On June 26, 1938 she was married to John B. Jipsen in Atlantic.
Following their marriage, they managed a grocery store in Portsmouth for two
years. In 1940 they moved to Kansas City, Missouri where John graduated that
year from the National School of Aeronautics and worked in the ammunition plant
in Kansas City. In 1944 they moved to a farm southeast of Wiota, Lola always had
a huge
garden and was usually outside working. She took great pride in her yard and
garden. She led a simple life working hard and was all about her family and her
church. She was a devout Methodist.
Survivors include three grandsons, Brian Walter Ballinger and wife Sherri of
Hollandale, MS, , Robert Roy Ballinger and wife Sherry of Hollandale, MS, and
Michael John Ballinger of Atlantic; four great grandchildren, Branden Ballinger,
Shelby Ballinger, Bryce Ballinger and Sarah Ballinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter Barbara Ann Ballinger
and son-in-law Rex Ballinger
Funeral Information
Services for Lola will be held on Friday, August 1, at the Roland Funeral Home
in Atlantic at 1:30 PM with Pastor Gary DeGeest officiating. Interment will be
in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Thomas Peter Keane died peacefully during a dialysis treatment on June 9, 2008.
He was 80 years old.
Tom was born September 11, 1927, to Catherine (Croghan) and Eugene Keane, in
Panama, Iowa. Tom served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II,
working with shell-shocked soldiers. Tom married Marcine (Herman) on October 11,
1958 and together they raised three children in Council Bluffs, where Tom was a
successful businessman with his own barbershop. His career there spanned 34
years and brought him great joy, as did his love of family and God.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary; brother, John; and his
infant son, Henry Eugene.
Tom leaves behind his beloved wife, Marcine, of Oro Valley, Ariz.; sons, Mark,
of Clarkston, Wash., Craig and his wife Maggie Baird, of Oro Valley; daughter,
Kelly Housewright and husband Tom; grandchildren, Abigale and Gabriel, all of
Glen Haven, Colo.; sisters, Theresa and Elizabeth.
A memorial mass service is being planned for December. He will be greatly
missed.

July 20, 2008 following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were Wednesday, July
23 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle, Nebr. with burial in St. Peter's
Catholic Cemetery, Newcastle. She was born in Harlan and grew up in Earling the
daughter of Alfons and Marie (Goeres) Goeser. She was a 1971 Harlan High School

McANDREWS-Neil. The love of Therese's life, Neil went home to God on Saturday
morning, July 12, 2008, after a short battle with liver cancer. Neil was born
November 1, 1939 in Harlan, IA. At the age of 6 months, his family of 12 moved
to Omaha where he lived until he moved to Renton, WA with his wife Therese.
Before his marriage, he served 4 years in the Air Force. He worked at Boeing for
28 years as a flight line mechanic and later as a manager. While at Boeing, Neil
and Therese spent 3 years in Iraq and Iran. One of his passions was owning race
horses and racing throughout Canada and Washington. His second passion was being
an avid bowler in which his highest game was 298. Neil is survived by his wife,
Therese of 42 years; brother, Bill McAndrews; sisters, Jean Szczepanowski, Mary
Albon, Carmen Leahy and many nieces and nephews.
Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony Church in Renton, WA on Wednesday July 16
at 11am. Reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St.
Anthony Church or Providence Hospice of Seattle.

ELK HORN - Karen Monahan, 51, of Harlan died Saturday, after her vehicle was
involved in a one-car crash on eastbound County Road F58, five miles west of Elk
Horn at 6:50 p.m.
Monahan was the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer when she missed a curve
in the road. The vehicle traveled into the south ditch and rolled, ejecting
Monahan.
Monahan's 17-year-old daughter, Amanda Monahan, was the passenger.
Elk Horn Fire and Rescue transported both from the scene to Myrtue Memorial
Hospital in Harlan where Monahan was pronounced dead from her injuries. Amanda
was treated for her injuries and release. Both were wearing seat belts at the
time of the crash.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Iowa State Patrol,
is investigating.

ELK HORN -- A 51-year-old Harlan woman died Saturday evening July 19, following
a one vehicle accident near here. Karen Monahan, 51, Harlan, died in a one
vehicle accident at 6:50 p.m. on County Road F58. Monahan was driving a 2003

in the accident. Elk Horn Fire and Rescue transported both from the scene to
Myrtue Medical Center, Harlan. Karen Monahan was pronounced dead at the hospital
and her daughter was treated and released. Monahan was a long time CDS Global
employee and was a member of the Harlan site's senior management team. The Iowa
State Patrol assisted the Shelby County Sheriff's office at the scene with the

Marlene S. Nielsen, of Harlan, Iowa, passed away August 12, 2008, at the age of
74 at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home after a short battle with cancer.
Marlene was born September 7, 1933, in Harrison County, Iowa to Harry and Agnes
(Baker) Simmons. She married Elvin Leroy Nielsen and raised 7 children in the
rural Oakland and Hancock, Iowa areas. Marlene worked for Jennie Edmundson
Hospital for over 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and Elvin Leroy Nielsen.
Marlene is survived by her children, Les Nielsen and wife LaVaughn, Pam Reed and
husband Stan, Cheryl Oloff and husband Lyle, Deb Calhoon and husband Jeff, Gene

Funeral services for Sandra K. Olesen, 55, were conducted by Pastor Dwayne
Ferguson on Monday, July 14, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist
Church in Audubon. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Honorary casket bearers were David Christensen, Keith Christensen, Chris
Christensen, Michael Christensen, Walt Suominen, James Brown, Stephen Asmus, and
Michael Bauer. Casket bearers were Jacob Christensen, Zane Christensen, Zebediah
Christensen, Cole Christensen, Clint Howard, Nick Kaiser, Cory Albert, and

Sandra Kay Olesen, the daughter of Chester and Ruth Genevieve McVicker
Christensen, was born Dec. 27, 1952, in Audubon, Iowa, and died peacefully at
her home on July 9, 2008, in Audubon, Iowa.
Sandy was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Audubon. She
attended Audubon Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of
1971.
On June 6, 1971 she was united in marriage to Vernon Tibben at the First United
Methodist Church in Audubon. Three children Christopher, Jennifer and Carrie
were born to this union. They lived in the Des Moines, Iowa area and she was
employed as a bookkeeper and also provided child care. Sandy returned to Audubon
in 1981.
On Jan. 22, 1982, she married Dennis Earl Olesen at the First United Methodist
Church in Audubon. Sandy's family was joined with Dennis and his children Matt
and Sarah. Later two children Nicole and Seth were born to this union. They
farmed east of Audubon and Sandy helped farm and raise the children. Later Sandy
was employed at the Friendship Home in Audubon as a Certified Nurses Aide for
several years. She then was a teacher's associate at the Audubon Elementary
School for eight years. For the past six years she has co-owned and helped
manage Audubon Real Estate with her husband Dennis.
Sandy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon where she was
the Church Historian, a member of the Abigail Circle, and taught Sunday School.
She also enjoyed various Bible Studies. Sandy and Dennis were foster parents for
several years. Most important to her was her family especially her grandchildren
who brought her great joy.
Preceding her in death were her son Christopher Shane Tibben; her mother Ruth
Genevieve McVicker; her niece Alexandra Ruth Christensen and her sister-at-heart
Susan Kay Suominen.
Survivors include her husband Dennis E. Olesen of Audubon, IA; her children:
Matthew Noel Olesen of Harlan, IA; Sarah Ann and Stephen Asmus; Jennifer Renae
Greazel; Carrie Michele and Michael Bauer; Nicole Channing and James Brown; Seth
