Collision with SUV kills motorcyclist
A 55-year-old Elk Horn man was killed Monday when the motorcycle he was driving
collided with an SUV in Harlan, the Iowa State Patrol said.
The motorcyclist was identified as Ross Boeck. He was taken by ambulance to the
hospital in Harlan, where he died.
The driver of the SUV, Shannon Bartley, 34, of Harlan, was taken by private
vehicle to the hospital with injuries that were not believed to be
life-threatening.
The collision occurred about 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 59
and Cyclone Avenue.
Bartley was stopped on Cyclone waiting to turn onto Highway 59. After a blue van
traveling on Highway 59 turned onto Cyclone, Bartley began to make her turn. She
told authorities she did not see Boeck, who was northbound on the highway.
Boeck's 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with the front of Bartley's
2003 GMC Yukon.
Boeck was thrown from the bike onto the highway. A State Patrol trooper worked
to revive him until Harlan Fire and Rescue arrived.

Fredericksen, Martin LaVern December 8, 1921 - April 1, 2008
M. LaVern Fredericksen
(December 8, 1921 - April 1, 2008)
LaVern Fredericksen, 86, of Elk Horn, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008,
at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa.
Martin LaVern Fredericksen was born on December 8, 1921, in Kimballton, Iowa,
the son of Martin Fred and Carrie (Petersen) Fredericksen. He was baptized and
confirmed at the Bethany Lutheran Church, northeast of Kimballton.
He served his country as a respected Sergeant in the United States Army during
World War II. He was assigned to Company B of the 365th Anti-Aircraft and
Searchlight Battalion. On his tour of duty he visited New Hebrides, Guadalcanal,
and the Philippine Islands. He played catcher for an Army softball team, which
made it into a tournament called the "Jungle Bowl". LaVern served his country
proudly and faithfully and this trait followed him throughout his life.
On June 7, 1946, he married Clara Luella Aagaard at the Elk Horn Lutheran
Church. After their marriage, LaVern became a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran
Church. They moved from Kimballton to Elk Horn in 1949, and lived there for the
remainder of his life.
LaVern was employed by Kaltoft Bros Construction, Nelson Jessen Oil Company,
Conway Transport Company, Elk Horn Brand Eggs, and the City of Elk Horn.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #322 and the Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
LaVern loved watching a good baseball game on TV, Wheel of Fortune, and old
shows such as, Lawrence Welk, Johnny Carson, Gun Smoke, John Wayne, and Bonanza.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, duck and pheasant hunting. LaVern's passion was his
woodworking shop in the basement where he built birdhouses, flower boxes, church
replicas, horse drawn wagons, golf carts, and various other objects. If there
was something he admired, he would go right to his shop and build it. More quiet
times were spent reading, doing cross word puzzles and seek-a-word puzzles.
LaVern took great pride in his home, enjoyed mowing, helping Luella water
flowers, making house repairs, visiting with friends and helping with family
projects.
He dearly loved his wife, Luella, of 61 years. The highlight everyday was to
take her for a car ride. Some days they would go from Elk Horn to Kimballton and
through the country until finally arriving at Prairie Rose State Park to see if
the fish were biting.
In the months at the Salem Home, LaVern developed a close relationship with his
friends and staff. The best times were the times spent talking, singing, and
watching old movies. Salem Home's loving and tender care was a great comfort to
LaVern.
LaVern loved his family and always looked forward to the holidays when he was
able to see his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
LaVern is survived by his wife, Luella of Elk Horn, Iowa; his daughter, Beth
Heitman and her husband, Kenny of Mineola, Iowa; his son, Tim Fredericksen and
his wife, Cindy of Elk Horn, Iowa; five grandchildren, Holly Greiner and her

Hockenberry, Scott Allan April 8, 1950 - April 27, 2008
Scott A. Hockenberry
(April 8, 1950 - April 27, 2008)
Scott A. Hockenberry, 58, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2008,
at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Scott Allan Hockenberry was born April 8, 1950, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Donald
Scott and Cora Maxine (Herrick) Hockenberry.
He attended grade school in the last country school in the Atlantic area and
went to Atlantic High School, graduating in 1968. He then went on to Iowa
Western Community College in Clarinda, Iowa, graduating with an Associates
Degree.
Not following a course he desired, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and
received an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Radio Broadcasting at Brown
College. Returning to Iowa, he worked briefly for KSIB Radio in Creston. When an
opportunity for employment as an announcer was offered by KJAN Radio Atlantic,
Scott moved home. He enjoyed his employment, the golf outings, the activities
they organized frequently, and his co-workers at KJAN, but after a time he felt
the need to continue his quest for a long nagging curiosity towards the funeral
industry.
Scott researched the requirements for mortuary science school and discovered he
would need additional courses in science, anatomy and psychology. He returned to
Iowa Western College in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for another year to attain the
necessary credits. Following that, in 1976, he applied to Worsham College of
Mortuary Science in Chicago, Illinois, and was accepted. He attended Worsham's,
and at the same time collected a couple more classes at Illinois State
University in Chicago. He graduated 2nd in his class at Worsham's receiving a
gold watch and the Morazak and Russ Award for Excellence in Restorative Art. In
1991, Scott returned for education and attended the Vernie Fountain National
Academy in Springfield, Missouri, which focuses on highly specialized embalming
practices and post mortem reconstructive surgery.
Scott served his internship and worked at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines,
Iowa, before starting work for Service Corporation International, a large
funeral company. He quickly became a district manager for 12 funeral homes in
central Iowa and was based out of McLaren's Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa.
While that was enlightening and educational, after a few years he decided to
purchase a funeral home. He bought funeral homes in Sioux City and Moville,
Iowa. He owned and operated Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Homes for 15
years before deciding to sell out and take time for some of life's enjoyments.
Aside from his avid reading practices and philosophical thinking, bike riding
was one of Scott's passions. He was a member of the Sioux City Cycle Club and
made many trips with his riding buddies. Among his favorites were Okoboji Bike
Rides and RAGBRAI. He enticed his children into riding and in 1995, Scott and
Shawn joined 300 others in the Iowa 150 Sesquicentennial Great Bike Ride Across
America.
In 1998, Scott realized his longtime dream and drove down the Elk Horn Road,
stopping at the corner where it meets the Marne Road, and, absorbing the night
lights of Atlantic sparkling across the valley, he returned home once more, for
good. Not knowing for certain his goal when he arrived, he decided to try a
different career and once again returned to Iowa Western College in Council
Bluffs to get a certificate in drug and alcohol counseling. He worked at ADAA
for a while until he concluded the void in his life was not being a funeral
director.
In 2001, after a brief time spent in semi-retirement, plans and work began to
remodel a building in Atlantic, and in 2002 Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home
opened its doors. In 2005, he acquired the funeral homes in Anita, Adair and
Casey, Iowa. He continued his love of the funeral industry until his untimely
death. His unique talents and ideas he taught and shared, will continue to be in
place for many years. He shall unquestionably be missed by many of his fellow
professionals, co-workers and families, who entrusted him with their loved ones
for over 30 years.
The art of humorous wit and ad-libs were exchanged between Scott and staff on a
daily basis. Others, too, will have a smile on their face as they remember his
ability to relate jokes and use his own distinct style of combining words. His
finger pointing upward, as we all laughed and taunted each other, will leave a
great emptiness in us as we continue on. He believed in the power of laughter.
Scott was a member of the Atlantic Elks Lodge 445, Pymosa Lodge A.F. & A. M.,
Kiwanis, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a Mortuary Fraternity, and the Iowa Funeral
Directors Association.
Scott married Kathie Hogue on June 16, 1973, in Harlan, Iowa. In addition to
Kathie, Scott is survived by his daughter, Karyn Powell, and her husband Jay, of
Rockford, Illinois, and his son, Shawn, of Atlantic, Iowa. Also saddened by his
death are, his father-in-law, Larry Hogue of Harlan, IA; brothers-in-law, Brad
Hogue of Oklahoma, Keary (Sheri) Hogue of Harlan, IA, Mark (Carla) Hogue of

IA; sister-in-law, Deb (Russ) Mangels of Waukee, IA; his many cherished cousins,
aunts and uncles; many nieces & nephews; his loyal and dedicated staff at the
funeral home; and countless friends from various locations.
Prior to Scott's death, he lost his parents, Donald and Maxine Hockenberry; his
mother-in-law, Shirley Hogue; a sister-in-law, Kelly Christiansen; and a number
of aunts and uncles.

Darlene Doris (Fuqua) Luxford
January 1, 1923 - April 1, 2008
Darlene Doris Luxford, the daughter of Ernest C. and Anna C. (Easton) Fuqua, was
born on January 1, 1923, in Fairfield, Iowa. She graduated from Fairfield High
School, where she was an award-winning baton twirler. Darlene then attended
Parsons College in Fairfield for two years, where she was a majorette, and
worked at a civil defense plant, also in Fairfield. On December 21, 1945, she
married Dean Howard Luxford at the Parsons College Chapel; this was shortly
after Dean's return from active duty in World War II. The couple moved to
Shelby, Iowa, where Darlene helped start the marching band in the Shelby school.
In 1952, she began working at Dean's insurance office. She later worked in real
estate, as well. Both Dean and Darlene retired on August 1, 1965. From 1970-72,
they were part owners of the Shelby Dairy Queen, helping to build the building
and business.
Darlene was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shelby, Iowa, where she
was active in the church ladies group. She was a member of the "Corner Attic
Artist Club" in Shelby, and was formerly an active Eastern Star member. Darlene
loved to travel, and she and Dean would take their RV south to Corpus Christi,
Texas. She enjoyed painting; she had the honor of designing the Shelby
Centennial emblem.
Darlene D. Luxford died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in
Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 85 years and 3 months.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Fuqua. She

Lucille Catherine (Pauley) Wendt was born march 19, 1929, to Leo and Louise
(Schmitz) Pauley in Panama, Iowa. The oldest of nine children, she attended
school in both Panama and Portsmouth, Iowa. She died on Friday, May 23, 2008, at
Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 79 years, two months,
and four days.
Babysitting, detasseling, and walking to her grandparents' home south of Panama,
are memories Lucille stated she would never forget. Such episodes as having her
hair cut like a boy by her Aunt Catherine Aggedie, sliding down the steep barn
roof, and swimming in the mud holes made Grandpa Schmitz say, "Worse than any
four boys," meaning her aunts Catherine and Marge and her sister Bernadine.
Lucille married Charles E. Wendt on August 28, 1946, in Panama, Iowa and resided
on the Thompson family farm between Panama and Earling until 1957. Charles
passed away June 13, 2000, they had been married 53 years. The union was blessed
with 17 children; Richard Wendt, Deanna (Harry) Kuhl of Glenwood, IA, Charles
Jr. (Sheryl) Wendt of Galena, MO, David (Brenda) Wendt of Logan, IA, Shirley
(David) Sigler of Logan, IA, Bette (Neil) Jensen of Woodbine, IA. S. Michael
(Barbara) Wendt of Anita, IA, Edward (Beverly) Wendt of Dunlap, IA, Roxann,
Darlene (Kelley) McMartin of Hancock, IA; Jeffrey (Sue) Wendt of Denison, IA,
Sharon (Dan) Royer of Woodbine, IA, Anthony Wendt, William (Fran) Wendt of
Woodbine, IA, Bruce (Kristina) Pauley of Woodbine, IA, MaryAnn, and Margaret.
They lived in Westphalia from 1957 to 1959 where Charles and Lucille managed the
St. Hubert Clubhouse. Lucille and Charlie moved to Woodbine in 1960, to the farm
where their grandson, Michael Jensen and his family now live. From 1960 to 1965,
they purchased and ran the Sunnyside Tap in Woodbine. Lucy worked at the Corn
Palace in Woodbine and then worked at the Logan Missouri Valley County Club and
GTE Telephone Company until she retired. Lucille enjoyed winters in Texas,
traveling to Mexico with kids and grandkids, especially showing the good places
to shop and eat. They belonged to a dance club and they loved to polka. She was
a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed the social gatherings.
After Charlie's death Lucille continued to live in the home they built in 1975
southeast of Woodbine on Highway 44. After a stroke on Easter 2004, she then
moved in with her daughter, Bette. In late 2005, she moved into the Rose Vista
Nursing Home in Woodbine.
Lucille was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Woodbine and St. Anne's in Logan,
which she made all the children attend every Sunday even though it took two
cars. Hobbies included cooking, cleaning, laundry and raising children.
Babysitting was not a hobby; it was an adventure for Lucille. Genealogy was
Lucille's greatest pastime, her answer to the question, "Who are they?" She'd
say, "You are related to them!"
In addition to her parents, Leo and Louise Pauley; she was preceded in death by
her children, Roxann in 1956, Anthony in 1960, MaryAnn in 1966, Margaret in
1967, Dr. Richard D.D.S. in 1992, grandchild LaVonne Wendt in 1973, brothers
Gerald and Walter Pauley; and sisters, Thelma Pauley and Bernadine Hayes.
Lucille is survived by her children; two sisters, MaryElla (Gary) Wilke and
Janice (Gerald) Waltz all of Portsmouth, IA; two brothers, Alfred (Delores)
Pauley and Kenneth (Eileen) Pauley all of Panama, IA; brother-in-law, Charles
Hayes of Portsmouth, IA: daughter-in-law, Connie (Wendt) Caskey of Albuquerque,
NM; 35 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law,
John (Buzz) and Elaine Wendt of Portsmouth, IA and Donna Wendt of Missouri
Valley, IA; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
