(January 26, 1920 - November 28, 2007)
Helen Dorothy Freund, 87, of Lewis, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 28,
2007, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.
Helen Dorothy Freund was born January 26, 1920, on a farm near Earling, Iowa,
the daughter of John Peter and Ida E. (Schimerowski) Zimmer. She was raised and
lived near Earling until she moved to Cass County following her marriage to Tony
Freund, February 4, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Church at Buck Grove, Iowa.
She was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic where she
had served on the Altar and Rosary Society.
Helen was an active farm wife and homemaker. She was well-known for her homemade
bread (big loaves!), cinnamon rolls, pies and more! She effortlessly cooked
meals for her family and whoever else happened to stop by at mealtime.
She was always available to her grandchildren – whether it was for “overnight
stays,” quick snacks/meals, “taxi service” and more.
An avid reader, she kept up on religion, current events and could hold her own
on “politics.” Helen also taught her kids and grandkids about birds and their
calls.
For Helen (and her late husband, Tony), it was all about family. While the
“boys” stayed close to home, the “girls” moved out of state and she’d always
say, “None of my girls live close to home anymore.” And her “family” extended
well beyond her own. We all remember that her door was always open.
Surviving Helen are her daughters, Joan Redler and her husband, Leroy, of
Aurora, Colorado; Jean Gerschermann of Placerville, California; Sherry Stodolski
and her husband, Neil, of Spearfish, South Dakota; Carole Lowe and her husband,
George, of Aurora, Colorado; and Julia Freund of Denver, Colorado; her sons,
Tony G. Freund, Jr. and his wife, Rhea, and Michael (Mike) Freund and his wife,
Debbie, all of Lewis, Iowa; her daughters-in-law, Marilyn Freund of Atlantic,
Iowa and Linda Freund-Ebbinga of Griswold, Iowa; 33 grandchildren; 32
great-grandchildren; a sister, Delphine Molony of Harlan, Iowa; two brothers,
Arthur Zimmer of Casey, Iowa and John (Bud) Zimmer of Dunlap, Iowa; as well as a
number of nieces and nephews.
Preceding Helen in death are her parents, John and Ida Zimmer; her husband,
Tony; a daughter, Mary Lea Freund; two sons, Charles (Chuck) Freund and Jack
Freund; a grandson, Mark Redler; a sister, Marie Freund; and a son-in-law, Heinz
Gerschermann.
The Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 3,
2007, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic with Father Dan
Siepker officiating.
A rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 2, followed by
visitation with the family at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.
Committal service and interment will be in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery.
A memorial is being established. Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, is

(Feldman) Kramer, in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St.
Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling. He received his schooling at St. Joseph's
Catholic School in Earling and graduated with the Class of 1949.
After graduation, Mark worked for area farmers as a hired man. On March 16,
1953, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean
War. He was honorably discharged from active duty on December 29, 1954, and
remained in the Army Reserves.
Mark was united in marriage to Mary Ann Fuhs on February 15, 1955, six weeks
after his return from service. Six children were born to this union: Dennis,

The family lived and farmed in the Portsmouth, Irwin and Manilla areas, before
settling back on the Kramer family farm in Earling in 1966. He and Bernie

or from the stands. In time, it was his grandchildren that he would be found
playing catch with. He would also put together puzzles or do anything to spend
time with them. The television always seemed to stop on a sports channel or a
good western.
Mark was a Fourth Degree past Grand Knight with the Earling Council No. 1741 of
the Knights of Columbus. He served on the St. Joseph's school board, Earling
city council, Earling Development Corporation, St. Joseph's parish board, and as

Obituary:
DOROTHY MAE MOLGAARD
Dorothy Mae Molgaard, 91, of Atlantic, Iowa, fell asleep in the arms of Jesus on
Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at her home in the Allen House for Assisted Living.
She was born November 13, 1916 to Joseph and Ruby Peterson Wheatley in a rural
Atlantic, Iowa farmhouse, where Dorothy spent her early childhood years. She was
educated at the country school close by. She met her husband to be in 1933, as
he worked for Dorothy’s father on the family farm. On September 6, 1935, they
were united in marriage. To this union were born two children: Marlene and
Merlyn.
Dorothy loved her family, polka music, her kittens, (there was never an untamed
one near), and the Danish traditions. Her home was open to all, but not to leave
without a cup of coffee and a Danish delight. She loved to cook the favorites
for her grandchildren, gearing especially toward pancakes, Johnny Cake, bran
muffins, and aeblskivers. She had a sweet tooth, which even demanded she
could-maybe-eat dessert before the main course????? She had a gentle, caring
nature, and could often “outfox the best” by simply sitting back and saying
nothing. In her later years, she enjoyed socializing and being with her “family”
at the Allen House. While there, Dorothy loved to play and WIN at Bingo and play
and WIN at cards. Dorothy’s faith and love for God was also an important element
in her life. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church.
Surviving are her children; daughter and son in law, Marlene and Bob McCoy,
Bedford; a son and daughter in law, Merlyn and Vonnie Molgaard, Loveland,
Colorado; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a
brother and sister in law, Lester and Elleen Wheatley, Elk Horn, Iowa, and a
sister and brother in law, M.J. (Sam) and Wayne King, Des Moines, Iowa. Her
parents and a brother, Boyd, preceded her in death. Dorothy will be greatly
missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., for visitation, with services
following at 11:00, Monday, December 17 at the Roland Funeral Home. Burial will
be in the Marne Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Allen
