Patient at Gateway Center dies after fall from second-story window
By CLARISSA ALJENTERA
claljentera@montereyherald.com
A patient at the Gateway Center in Pacific Grove died of head injuries Saturday
after falling out of a closed second-story window, the Monterey County Coroner's
Office said Monday.
"He accidentally fell out of the window," said Tom Jenkins of the Coroner's
Office.
Kathleen Adamson, chief executive of the facility for developmentally disabled
adults, said Jeffrey Harrington, 28, suffered from extreme autism and was highly
agitated before crashing through the window.
"He was upset, and they were going to try and calm him down," said Adamson. "He
was moving around the room, and I don't think he was thinking that the window
and glass would break."
Adamson said Harrington was thrashing violently before he fell to his death. She
said patients at the Congress Avenue facility are not restrained.
Pacific Grove police responded to the 911 call around 8 a.m. Capt. Carl Miller
said Harrington was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, where
he was pronounced dead.
Adamson said the center was staffed by three or four attendants at the time of
the accident.
The death is being investigated by the state Community Care License Division as
well as the Police Department.

Schwarte's faith took her around the world
Bernice Schwarte lived out her faith in volunteer work at her church, in a
nursing home and even in far-reaching lands.
Schwarte was a longtime member of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Council
Bluffs. She took Communion to Catholic patients at Bethany Lutheran Home.
And with one of her brothers, who is a priest, she traveled around the world on
mission trips, said her sister Margaret Eipperle of Omaha.
After a four-year battle with breast cancer, Schwarte died Tuesday at Hospice
House in Omaha.
The 69-year-old retired secretary was born in Westphalia, Iowa. She graduated
from St. Mary High School in Panama, Iowa, and the Commercial Extension Business
College in Omaha.
A secretary for the Federal Land Bank for nearly 30 years, Schwarte enjoyed
landscaping her yard and spending time with friends and family.
Schwarte, who never married, was an example in her fight against cancer,
Eipperle said.
"She was always very positive. She wouldn't give in. She always thought she
would get well," she said.
Other survivors include sisters Caroline Esser of Logan, Iowa, and Marie
Sullivan of Panama, Iowa; and brothers William Schwarte and Monsignor Michael
Schwarte, both of Earling, Iowa, and Martin Schwarte of Harlan, Iowa.
