Shelby County, Iowa, soon after its organization, was divided into two civil townships, "Galland's Grove", and "Round" being the names of such divisions. From time to time these divisions have been sub-divided and rebounded until about 1875, when they assumed the uniform shape and size in which they are at present. This included the townships of Cass, consituted June 7, 1869; Clay, constituted September 16, 1867; Douglas, constituted April 3, 1871; Fairview, constituted September 3, 1860; Greeley, constituted June 2, 1874; Grove, one of the two original townships, was organized with its present boundaries in 1854; Harlan, constituted September 3, 1860; Jackson, constituted September 3, 1860; Jefferson, constituted April 3, 1871; Lincoln, April 3, 1871; Monroe, January 7, 1873; Polk, April 3, 1871; Shelby, September 6, 1870; Union, September 4, 1871; Washington, April 3, 1871; and Westphalia, organized June 2, 1874.
