"When rural schoolhouses were first built in Ringgold County, they were built where the need was
the greatest. But eventually districts were formed and education became organized. It was decided to place a rural school every two miles
so a pupil would never have to walk more than a mile to school. My notes say
[July 1890. . . ] is the time frame when the schools were placed about every two miles. . ."

Mrs. Mildred CANNON was the teacher at the Saltzman School for the year 1954-55. ~ ~ ~ ~
Saltzman School, which had been open for the 1959-60 School year, was acquired by Mount Ayr District School District.

Three rural schools in the Mount Ayr Community school district were sold Saturday at public auction for $697. Lotts
Creek No. 2 (Caledonia) was sold to Orville Van WINKLE for $147; Lotts Creek No. 5 (Watterson) was purchased by Ted
HIGHTSHOE for $200, and Poe No. 6 (Saltzman) went to Sam ADAMS for $350.00. Dennis OWENS was the auctioneer and
Kermit MILLER served as clerk.

Saltzman School had been moved two times from its original location. It is located two miles east of
Mount Ayr on Highway 2, then south 4 1/2 miles where it is used as a home.
