The three-story (plus basement) brick school, Kellerton's third school house, was constructed in 1915. A gynmasium was built in the summer of 1952. In 1960, Kellerton and Grand River consolidated to create Grand Valley Community School District in time for the opening of the 1960-61 school year in the fall.

Grand Valley Community School was dissolved with the Class of 1992 as the last graduating class. For a while, elementary students attended class in the building until 1996. Final deposition of the property was conducted in the fall of 1998. Upon Grand Valley's closing, there was a proposal to convert the school building into a safe house for abused women, among other things. Of the main concern was the ability to provide proper security should such a transformation take place. Ultimately, it was decided to demolish both schoolhouses instead of allowing the buildings to deteriorate and fall into a state of decline and decay.

The gym at the Kellerton school grounds serves as a community center [former shop and voc ag rooms]. The one-roomed school house, formerly the Foland School n.e. of Grand River then GV's music room, was moved uptown. It was returned to the school grounds in 2001. It now serves as a museum for Kellerton Public School, Grand Valley Community School and the town of Kellerton, Iowa.
