Chicks from Sticks debut cookbook of area recipes
Two former Grand River residents debuted their new cookbook, "Two Chicks from the Sticks: Back Home Baking"
at the Iowa State Fair. Jill SCHWALBE MEANS and Jamie GREENLAND GOREY grew up on neighboring farms and have
been lifelong friends. After high school at Grand Valley, the girls both graduated from Iowa State University
with foods degrees and followed each other to Chicago, IL. From there they married and went their separate ways
with Jill ending up in Des Moines and Jamie in Atlanta, GA. Not too long ago the two of them decided to form
their own company "Two Chicks from the Sticks LLC" and develop projects that they could work on together.
After sampling baked goods from some of the best known bakeries around the country, they came to the same
conclusion -- "It was good but it wasn't as good as Merna's Famous Cinnamon Rolls or Patricia's Raisin Cream
Bars back home." The two decided to compile a cookbook of great southern Iowa baking recipes along with a
few stories about growing up in rural Iowa and the people behind some of their favorite recipes. The two sold
and autographed cookbooks for the first 10 days of the Iowa State Fair and even sponsored three baking
competitions at the fair. The pair have a blog at http://twochicksfromthesticks com/blog and can also be
found on Facebook and Twitter.
