Mount Ayr doctor quoted on apple eating in 1909

Helen TERRY brought in an article from the December 25, 1909 Taos Valley News from Taos, NM, which had a mention of Mount Ayr in it.

Here is the article:

The Albuquerque Morning Journal prints the following, which is assuring that, if it be true, there will be a ready market for Taos Valley apples.

It reads:

A Des Moines, Iowa dispatch says,

"Dr. Samuel BAILEY, of Mount Ayre (sic), and a prominent member of the National Medical Society, today before the State Horticultural Society, declared that apple eating kills the taste for cocktails and other strong drinks.

"He says it is the meat eaters who become addicted to strong liquor and that fruit eating should be encouraged as a solution of the liquor problem. The society indorsed his theory."
