Iowa State sesquicentennial celebrated

The 150th anniversary of the founding of Iowa State University was celebrated with an open house and a tree planting project at the Ringgold county extension office in Mount Ayr Friday. Two trees were planted in Mable Rice Park to mark the occasion and a plaque was presented, which will be placed on a gazebo planned for the park at a later date.

As part of the observance, an Iowa State University graduate was chosen to be honored for service to IUS extension and Ringgold County Farm Bureau, which also helped with the observance. Mount Ayr Record-News publisher H. Alan SMith received a certificate and a copy of the new sesquicentennial history of Iowa State University.

Shown at the tree planting are, from left: extension field specialist Joyce Lash, county extension council chairperson Karen Pettinger, extension county youth coordinator and office assistant Dawn Dugan, H. Alan Smith, county extension education director Judy Hensley, Farm Bureau representative Raymond Shields and Iowa State University professor Roger Smith from the College of Human Services.
