MAC students doing drafting for new Great Western building here
The walls are coming down to make way for a new Great Western Bank facility at the intersection of Highway 2 and Taylor
Street in Mount Ayr and a Mount Ayr Community high school class has had a big part in getting ready for what's to come.
The bank building was closed when it was found to contain mold that couldn't be controlled and the bank has functioned
from temporary facilities in the Alliant Enery building for several months. A Mount Ayr Community high school class,
especially high school senior Hans LARSON, has been working on helping get the plans into shape for the new building.
Under the direction of high school industrial arts teacher Ron LANDPHAIR, LARSON has been drafting the plans for the new
facility for quite some time using the school's computer equipment.
LARSON began working on the project in the second quarter and has taken an independent study class the second semester
to work on this real-world project. "It's been a great experience for Hans and some of the other students to get
experience with a project that is being built," LANDPHAIR said. The plans for the new facility are using the existing
basement and vault and then constructing a new facility over it. The school as 3D CAD software, so the plans are being
drawn up so the final building plans can be shown as it is three dimensional object, not just two-dimensional drawings
on paper. "This takes a long time on the front end, but at the end changes can be made and construction drafts completed
quickly," LANDPHAIR said. Great Western Bank president Kim GREENLAND has spent a lot of time at the school in the
past few weeks as the deadline for having the drawings completed as March 17 approached. The work was fast and furious
as the deadline approached and some other students lent a helping hand to getting the drafting completed. "It was
a good experience to recognize how important it is to meet deadlines in the real world," LANDPHAIR noted. Joe MURPHY and
Rick FOX at Southwest Builder Supply also helped point LARSON in the right direction as he worked on the plans.
Construction will begin soon and bank officials hope to have the new building completed by late fall.
