Lightning strikes tree in Mount Ayr
Spring has brought its share of thunderstorms to Ringgold county. One storm last week brought
an early morning lightning strike to an evergreen tree in the yard of R. B. and Mary DAVENPORT at 1104 W. Madison Street
in Mount Ayr. R. B. DAVENPORT was already on his school bus route when the lightning strike startled Mary, who was still
at home. It wasn't until later in the day, however, that a neighbor pointed out the damage to the tree. The lightning
struck the top of the tree and splintered bark all the way down to the ground, throwing bark around the yard. The force
of the explosion was so strong that one splinter of the bark struck in the soffit of the house. "We're just glad the
tree took the bolt instead of the house," the DAVENPORTS said.
