George JACKSON, president of the Mount Ayr Businessme's Club, presented a $25 savings bond to Mrs. Larry KONOPASEK of Davis
City for her son, Scott Neal, the 2,000th baby born in the Ringgold County Hospital during its eleven years of operation.
Following a meeting of the town council held Monday evening, for the purpose of discussing a proposed swimming pool for
the town, the meeting was turned over to the Mount Ayr Improvement Council. Jake DAILEY, president, appointed a
nominating committee, composed of Marian CARR, David IRVING and Supt. C. Arthur HANSEN, which, in turn, named the
following to a swimming pool committee -- Bill HAROVER, chairman; Charles LAWHEAD, publicity, Joe GROSS, Marian CARR,
Richard GISH and Irma NELSON. These six persons will function to determine where financial assistance can be secured to
inspect pools in nearby communities and otherwise work towards securing a pool.
Mrs. Charles W. LAWHEAD of this city was elected president of the Northwest Missouri State College Alumni Association
during its annual meeting held Thursday night in Maryville. A 1942 graduate of the college, Mrs. LAWHEAD served the past
year as vice president of the alumni association.
Keith COLE defeated Dr. Charles W. LAWHEAD in the finals of the match play handicap tournament,which has been in progress
since April at the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club. Fifty-two local golfers participated in the tournament, the finals of
which were played Sunday.
Five persons -- two school children and three adults -- were winners of $25 U.S. Savings Bonds Monday on the occasion
of the visit to Mount Ayr of the Iowa National Guard display, which featured a replica of the Liberty Bell and a mock-up
of an Honest John rocket. The winners were as follows: school children - Steve O'GRADY, Ellston and Allan HUNTER, Mount
Ayr; adults - Forest JOHNSTON, Mount Ayr; Jim VANATTA, Creston, and Doyle TRULLINGER, Lamoni. Names of the winners were
drawn by Pauletta DAVIDSON and Kenneth McCAY.
The property of the late Mary BROWN was sold Saturday at public auction for a total of $5,365. The residential property,
one block west of the southwest corner of the square in Mount Ayr, was sold to Dr. Charles W. LAWHEAD for $2,900.
The 40 acres of land, five miles southwest of Mount Ayr in Rice township, was sold to Clair WOOLLUMS for $2,440. The
west half of Lot 17 and all of Lot 18 in Benton were sold to Merle BUTLER for $25. The sale was conducted by Jim ROSS,
administrator, and Jack HUTCHINSON and Charles McNUTT, auctioneers.
At a special awards assembly, held May 23, Karen DOLECHECK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank DOLECHECK of Mount Ayr, and
Donald SMITH, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted SMITH of Delphos, were awarded perfect attendance medals. These students have been
neither absent nor tardy during their four years of high school.
Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the Redding lumberyard Friday about midnight during a severe thunder storm.
The 40x80 building, located on the west side of the square and owned by Fred HIATT, housed some used lumber, a tractor
and electrical equipment owned by Denzil WAUGH, all of which were destroyed.
