The late Virgil FRENCH of rural Bedford has been presented an Iowa Wildlife Farmer of the Year award
program by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The award was presented to Mrs. Norma FRENCH, a former
Mount Ayr resident, by Mel MOE, wildlife biologist from Mount Ayr. In presenting the award, MOE noted that the
diverse farming practices on the FRENCH farm have provided winter cover, food and travel lanes for a variety of
wildlife species and that planting of trees and shrubs has also been beneficial to small non-game birds. FRENCH,
who died this past year, donated 80 acres of wildlife habitat in Gay township in Taylor county, 16 miles west
of Mount Ayr, to the state of Iowa and this land will be managed by the Taylor County Conservation Board.
