RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 28, 1995

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

A long time Tingley building burned to the ground sunday afternoon in a fire that was fought by the Tingley and Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Departments. Destroyed was the old elevator office building south of the downtown area. The building, owned by Melvin RICHARDS, housed a scale that was used from time to time, but was mostly empty. The building was completely destroyed and there was still some smoke rising from the ruins Tuesday morning. The fire was kept from spreading to other buildings close to it. No cause for the blaze had been determined officially early this week.

It has been several years since there has been a shelter house at Loch Ayr, the city reservoir north of Mount Ayr. The last shelter house was the victim of a tornado several years ago. The Mount Ayr Sportsman's Club, which helps the city with the reservoir area, has constructed a new shelter house on the north side of the lake, with access from the east side of the lake.

A Mount Ayr gardener had a double squash grow in his garden this year -- a year when many garden items didn't do well at all. Glen AUSTIN picked the squash this week before a freeze brought the gardening season to a halt.

Vaughn CLARK, county engineer in Decatur and Ringgold counties, has announced plans to retire as of Oct. 31. CLARK has been in that capacity in Decatur county for 28 years and for the last seven years of those he also has served in Ringgold county. When CLARK began work in Decatur county, there were only four miles of the 750 total miles of road in that county that was paved!

Diagonal's Amanda SCHLAPIA was crowned the Iowa Polled Hereford queen at the cattle group's annual tour and banquet at Little Amana recently. SCHLAPIA will serve as the queen at all Polled Hereford shows in the state during the new year and will also pass out ribbons at the junior National Show in Des Moines in 1996. SCHLAPIA may also compete for national queen honors in the coming year.
