Ringgold County 4-Hers were recipients of various awards presented during the annual Ringgold county 4-H award
recognition program held November 21 in the Mount Ayr Community high school auditorium.
Kevin MYERS of rural Mount Ayr became the 22nd member of the Mount Ayr Community high school chapter of the Future
Farmers of America to receive the American Farmer degree. MYERS was presented the degree, the highest prented
bythe National Future Famers of America organization, in a special ceremony Friday, November 15, at the 58th
national FFA convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
Gary WURSTER of Tingley is the owner of a Polled Hereford cow which has been awarded Benchmark Dam status by
the American Polled Hereford Association.
A former Ringgold County resident, Ione THOMPSON BAAL, has been recognized by peers for her contribution to the
professional growth and development of guidance and counseling, locally and nationally, during her 27years of
service as a counselor and administrative supervisor with the Des Moines school. She and her parents, Jessie E.
and Osmer R. THOMPSON, lived on the family farm near Watterson and she attended grades one through eight at
Oak Ridge country school in Lotts Creek township, completing at age 11. She entered the newly build Mount
Ayr high school, graduating in 1940.
Grand openings are scheduled at two now Mount Ayr businesses this week, DREDGE Feed Service, Mount Ayr's new
Wayne Feeds dealer, will have its grand opening Tuesday, December 3, from 8 to 5 p.m. at the business located
at Hilltop Veterinary Clinic. Grand opening and Christmas open house for Forget-Me-Not Flowers and Gifts
at 116 W. Adams is set for Friday and Saturday, December 6 and 7.
Winning the Elanco Cow Gal Award at the Ringgold County Cattlemen's Association banquet recently was Mrs.
Hester DERSCHEID of Ellston.
Mrs. Elgin SHIDLER of Mount Ayr, who taught in country schools for 47 years, pursued a goal of a college
degree for 39 of those years. Now retired, she spent half of her career in country schools and half in the
Diagonal Community Schools.
Three new teachers in the Diagonal School system this year are Darla SOBOTKA, Dianna LARSON, and Mrs. McNAUGHT.
