Becky JAMES of Middle Fork township won the title of "Ridiculous Day Queen" Saturday following the parade, which was held
in connection with the annual Ridiculous Days celebration in Mount Ayr. First, second and third runners-up, respectively,
were Jeani BASTOW, Mount Ayr; Janice FRAME, Clearfield, and Karen Sue McQUIGG, Mount Ayr.
Ringgold 4-H baby beeves were consistently in the money in the tough competition of the Saint Joseph Interstate Show held
last week. Randall HANSON of Diagonal placed third and Don SMITH was fifth in the lightweight Hereford class. Craig ELLIOTT
was fifth in the medium weight Angus class. Judy BRAMMER rated eighth in the home-raised class with her Hereford steer,
while Jack WACKERNAGLE and David LYNCH were just out of the money with their Shorthorn steers. Don SMITH had the high
selling steer at $32.50, while Craig ELLIOTT received $32.25.
The drivers and occupants of two cars escaped injury Sunday morning when their cars collided at the intersection of
Highways 2 and 25 west of Mount Ayr. The accident happened about 11 a.m. when Earl Alvin BRINER, 23, of Mount Ayr drove
onto the highway in front of a car, driven by Helen Virginia KRUTSINGER, 36, of Chariton. BRINER had observed the stop
sign at the junction of the highways and then pulled directly into the path of the oncoming car.
Walter H. HUDSON will turn in his keys tomorrow, Sept. 28, the date that marks the close of a career of 42 years and eight
months with the Mount Ayr post office. Mr. HUDSON'S long period of service began January 16, 1920, when he was appointed
temporary rural carrier to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ebon McANINCH.
The Mount Ayr Raiders won their home opener before a large crowd as they defeated the Villisca Bluejays, 38-0, Friday
night, with coach Joe McNEILL using his entire bench in winning their first Tall Corn Conference game.
Lora Jane BAKER was installed as Worthy Advisor of Mount Ayr Assembly No. 160 Order of the Rainbow for Girls, during a
ceremony held Sunday afternoon in the Masonic Temple.
Raymond William GEPNER, 27, of Oskaloosa was killed instantly in an automobile accident about 7:30 p.m.Saturday evening on
a county road five miles southwest of Oskaloosa. He was the second eldest of the six children of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. GEPNER
of this city where he grew to manhood and was graduated from high school.
