Dr. Duane E. MITCHELL had been in the practice of medicine for 42 years until the decision was made recently to retire.
He and his wife, Joy, expect to maintain their home in Mount Ayr and spend more time with their family and particularly
enjoy their six grandchildren now that they will have a less busy schedule. Everyone who has enjoyed his care and company at the hospital will be sad to see him go.
One of the tallest catalpa trees in the state of Iowa was struck by lightning in the storm that rolled through Ringgold
County Friday night. The lightning blew bark off the tree from a branch high in the tree all the way to the ground at the
Lynden TAYLOR farm south of Mount Ayr. The tree has been in the front yard of the century farm for a number of years and
the TAYLORS were hoping that the tree would survive the damage.
Injuries suffered when a trench collapsed at a work site near Lake Panorama killed a Clearfield man. Dennis KERNS, 39, owner of
Kerns Plumbing and Electric in Clearfield, was working in a trench Saturday when the sides of the ditch caved in and
buried him. Four off-duty fire fighters from Des Moines and another Des Moines man used rescue equipment brought in to try
to aid KERNS. He was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
The three point charge of Kellerton/Grand River/ Beaconsfield United Methodist Churches has a new pastor. Pastor Wendi
