Members of the Mount Ayr chapter of Future Farmers of America won three gold and one silver ratings in sub-district
competition Saturday in Creston. The chapter program demonstration team, composed of Philip DRAKE, James McCREARY and
Jack GOODALE, projector operator, was the only team to receive a gold rating, which entitles them to enter district
competition. In the publich speaking contest, David LYNCH won a gold rating on his speech entitled "Our Soil Prosperity or
Poverty." He is also eligible for district competition. With its demonstration, the F.F.A. parliamentartary procedure team,
composed of Ronald BURGHER, David KNAPP, Robert MARLER, Craig ELLIOTT and Keith BASTOW, also won a gold rating and the right
to advance to district competition. A silver rating was awarded to Stephen SWANK in the highly competitive freshman creed
speaking contest.
Nine bowlers of this area, who participated recently in the district Farm Bureau tournament in Creston, have qualified for
the state finals of the tournament to be played March 5 at Merle Hay Plaza in Des Moines. The Laurance BISHOP team, members of
which are Mr. BISHOP, Keith COLE, Bill MONAGHAN, Phil WHITE and Albert BAGLEY, which placed first in the district tournament,
will bowl in the team event. Bob LESAN and Albert BAGLEY will bowl in the doubles event and bowling in the singles event will
be Elmo ROE, Gary McCULLOUGH and Lester SICKELS.
Jerry KNIGHT, Mount Ayr's first entry in a state wrestling tournament, was defeated 8-0 by Reg WICKS of Decorah in the
154-pound class Friday in Waterloo. KNIGHT became eligible for state competition when he placed second in his class at the
district tournament held last week in Corning.
The Rebel Raiderettes recently finished their most successful season since girls basketball was organized in the
Mount Ayr Center in 1959. The girls are credited with a record of 15 straight wins and only one loss, their opening game
last year.
Ringgold county's first member of the Peace Corps is Jerold L. DRAKE, son of Mrs. Georgia DRAKE of Mount Ayr and Winterset.
DRAKE, a 1959 graduate of the Mount Ayr Community high school, received the degree of bachelor of laws from the University
of Missouri, Columbia, on January 25.
The good citizens of Delphos community assisted the Bud WILSON family in moving Tuesday of last week to their new home
southwest of Mount Ayr, which they recently purchased.
