Howard Dean Nickles, who had served since March 14, 1966, in Vietnam, returned March 10 to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Nickles, of Benton, for a two week visit before being reassigned to duty. A member of Company C, 2n Battalion, 2nd Infantry, Nickles was awarded two Bronze Star Medals for heroism from Nov. 15 to Nov. 16, 1966, and meritorious achievement from March, 1966 to February 1967, and also the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on Nov. 15, 1966.
A fire Tuesday afternoon caused extensive damage to the Elbert Strange home and its contents.
Larry Giles is the newly eleted president of the Mount Ayr Education Association.
Alice Minnick, senior trumpeter, has received the Arion award as outstanding senior member of the Mount Ayr Community High School Band.
