When Mary CAVIN of rural Blockton, now director, accepted employment at the newly established Neighborhood Center at Mount
Ayr in June of 1967 she said she would do so on a six-month trial basis. She has stayed 20 years. Richard GROSE was the
first director and Mary assisted. After close to two years, she became director when GROSE resigned to take additional
educational training.
Ringgold County Extension Council elections were completed Monday, Nov. 23, with seven being re-electd and one new member
elected. Marla BICKEL was selected as the member in Grant township succeeding Gerald ZOLLAR. Reelected for another term
were: Monroe township, Ivan DOLECHECK; Benton, David LYNCH; Tingley, Carl RIGGS; Rice, Craig ELLIOTT; Washington, Jerry
WIMER; Lotts Creek, Randy BISHOP, and Liberty, Marvin TRIGGS.
New job training agreements between Southwestern Community College and a number of area industries were signed at the
regular meeting of the Southwestern Community College board of directors recently. Setmakers Industries, Inc. of Mount
Ayr, the new business here which manufactures restaurant seating equipment, was one of the industries signing a job
training agreement by which SWCC will help train employees of the firm.
New coordinator for the Ringgold county A Little Love Assures Youth (ALLAY) Council was named this week. Wanda BENNETT of
rural Mount Ayr is the new coordinator of the council which works to prevent child abuse. BENNETT will be coordinator for
a home health visitor program which will use volunteers to visit the homes of first time parents to give support and
encouragement for new parents.
The Construction Technology class has used part of their class time in assembling and erecting of the elementary
playground equipment. The project which is far from completion has been a very rewarding experience to the dedicated
students of the class. Chet ROED is their instructor.
Randy SMITH of Mount Ayr was honored as the first driver ever to win the track championship at the Knoxville race track
for four seasons at the track's annual banquet Saturday, Nov. 14. SMITH received a championship jacket, clock and a
cash award for the feat.
Debbie WEBB, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Jim WEBB of Chelsea, MI,recently won top honors for her school and established a new
varsity diving record at the Jackson, MI swim meet. Debbie and her brother, Doug, attended school in Mount Ayr until the
family moved to Chelsea. They are the grandchildren of Bob BASTOW of Mount Ayr and the great-grandchildren of Mrs. Mary
TRIGGS, also of this community.
