G. Dale HERRINGTON, Mount Ayr Community high school basketball coach for the past nine years, reached a milestone
in his 25-year coaching career on November 17 when Mount Ayr downed Diagonal 90-67 and gained for Coach HERRINGTON
the 400th victory of his career with only 169 defeats. HERRINGTON started his coaching career at Redding and later
coached at Newberg and Van Meter and after a tour of duty with the armed forces, he returned to his home town of
Diagonal, where as a coach he maintained the winning tradition of Coach O.C. (Pop) VARNER. HERRINGTON came to Mount
Ayr as a coach in 1956.
Leonard Wayne SWANK and Donald Gene SCHUSTER reported November 17 to Ringgold County Local Board No. 13-81 for
induction into the armed forces and were sent to Fort Leonard Wood, MO. for their basic training. Parents of the young
men are Mr. and Mrs. Lyle SWANK of Benton, and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde SCHUSTER of Maloy. Reporting for physical examinations
on November 24 were Wallace E. LEEPER, Elvin L. MERCER and Lyle E. HOGUE. David W. RAINEY and Ley E. HARRIS reported in
Des Moines from their homes near Ft. Des Moines.
Mrs. Keith WALTERS and family, who had resided near Maloy for several years, went Sunday to Mount Pleasant where they
joined their husband and father who, on November 9, assumed the duties of assistant manager for the C.C.A. Grain
Elevator. Manger of the elevator, where Mr. WALTERS is employed, is Philip DUKES, formerly of Diagonal, whose wife
is the former Carol TAYLOR, also of that city.
STUDENT AYR -- Sharon LONG, Paulete DAVIS, Carol DAVIS, Susan LESAN, Betty MERRITT, Diana WEBB and Vickie
PRENTIS were inducted November 18 into Tri-Hi-Y by the officers.
~ ~ ~ ~Nine students of the Mount Ayr Community High School have been selected to play in the
Little All-State Band Festival to be held December 2 and 3, in Creston. They and the instruments played are: Jeane
BLACK and Brian HUNTER, baritone; Janice CALDWELL, trumpet; Carol DAVIS, flute and piccolo; Marilyn DAVIS clarinet;
Collus LAWHEAD, trombone; Paul LONG, tuba; Lola MINNICK, French horn; and Mary Lou MULLENAX, bass clarinet.
