A break-in, which occurred Sunday night or early Monday morning at the Wicker Cafe in Kellerton, is being investigated
by Sheriff Elbert STRANGE. Stolen from the cafe were a box of King Edward and a few Perfecto cigars, approximately
20 packs of Winston and L & M cigarettes, two boxes of Big Deal cookies, one box of Brownie cake, three boxes of
doughnuts and six pints of chocolate milk. Approximately 62 cartons of cigarettes and three boxes of cigars, stolen
from the Breckenridge Store in Tingley on January 20, were found Wednesday of last week discarded five miles north of
Blair, KS. The items were found in a five-foot steel tube of a culver by the sheriff of Troy, KS, who notified Sheriff
Elbert STRANGE of the discovery. Sheriff STRANGE went to Troy and returned the cigarettes and cigars to his office,
where they were identified by Dean BRECKENRIDGE as the ones taken from his store.
Eugene RICKER, senior sprinter of the Mount Ayr Community high school, placed second in the 50-yard dash at the U. S.
Track and Field Federation, Iowa divisoin, indoor meet held Saturday at the Drake fieldhouse in Des Moines. RICKER,
who competed against the top prep sprinters in the state, ran :5.6 three times during the day and finished second
to Clyde Duncan of North Des Moines in the finals.
Rick DEFENBAUGH, Mount Ayr's outstanding hurdler, was disqualified in the high hurdles for two false starts. He won
his preliminary and semi-heats in the 60-yard low hurdles; was clocked in the excellent time of :6.4 in the
semi-final heat and finished fifth in the finals.
Marvin E. POWELL is one of 42 science teacher selected from 12 north central states to participate in the Academic
Year Institute of the State University of South Dakota, Vermillion, during the 1964-65 school year. POWELL, son of
Mrs. Gerald MUNDELL of this city, is a biology and science instructor, assistant football coach and student
counsellor in the all-senior high school in Westminster, CO.
Linda HARTMAN, an outstanding member of the Raiderette basketball team and a district champion, finished high
among the top ranking participants in the free throw contest held March 13 during the state basketball
tournament. By connecting on 22 of 25 shots from the free throw line. Linda ranked sixth in a field of 31
district champions and runners-up.
Elbert T. STRANGE announced his candidacy for sheriff of Ringgold county, subject to the will of the Democratic
voters at the primary election on June 1, 1964. Mr. STRANGE, who is serving his fourth year of a first term,
seeks a second term as the county's official peace officer.
Nancy BLUNCK, senior in the Mount Ayr Community high school and outstanding guard of the Raiderettes basketball
team, has been named to two first all-state teams and an all-southwest Iowa team. BLUNCK is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Roy BLUNCK of Benton.
