Only one game separates the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes from a trip to the
girls state basketball tournament in Des Moines. With their 60-56 victory over Bedford in Creston Tuesday night, the
Raiderettes moved to the finals of the regional girls basketball tournament, where a win would put the girls in the
state tournament. The regional final will be held at 7 p.m. Friday night in Shenandoah with the Raiderettes facing
Tri-Center of Neola, according to an announcement from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union early Wednesday
morning..
At a special meeting of the Mount Ayr city council Mayor Albert DRAKE resigned from his position effective
February 28, 1987, and the council accepted the resignation with regret. DRAKE has been mayor of Mount Ayr for a
little over nine years. He said Tuesday that the resignation came following a difference of opinion with the council
over recent decisions dealing with the Mount Ayr Park Board. Mayor pro tem for the council is Raymond HENSLEY.
Investigation in to the death of Olin MURPHY, seventy-nine, of rural Delphos, continues this week with an official ruling
in the case not available Tuesday. Murphy was wounded with a 22 rifle shot to the head at his home four miles
southwest of Delphos between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, according to Ringgold County Sheriff's Department
officials. He was taken to Ringgold County Hospital and then flown by Life Flight to Iowa Methodist Medical Center
in Des Moines, where he was pronounced dead about noon. MURPHY lives with his son, Doyle, on a farm, and his son
found him on the porch Sunday morning, according to officials.
NOTE: Olin E. MURPHY, son of Asa Gilbert and Ida A. (ATHEY) MURPHY, was born on November
5, 1907, and died in February of 1987. He was
interred at Redding Cemetery.
Dana WEEDA, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Dan WEEDA of
Tingley, showed the grand champion heifer in the shorthorn division of the Iowa Beef Expo Junior Show over the
weekend in Des Moines. The heifer is from the herd of Dan and Lloyd WEEDA of Tingley.

LPN student Barbara GORMAN of Kellerton received a $100 academic award from a gift of the 1985-86 LPN class this
semester..
Kelly GRAHAM of Benton was chosen Iowa Polled Hereford queen at the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines Sunday.
Kelly is the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert GRAHAM and a junior at Mount Ayr Community high school.
Kevin O'MAILIA will be the sole Mount Ayr Community high school Raider wrestler participating in the state wrestling
tournament this year. O'MAILIA wrestles at 167 pounds.
