For the first time, Mount Ayr city employees are in the process of bargaining a union contract withthe city. At a special meeting of the city council Thursday, Sept. 18, Sandy Opstvedt of Union Local No 55 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and city employee Charles WASKE met with the council with their opening contract proposal.

Grand Valley Community school district voters overwhelmingly voted to dissolve their school district effective July 1, 1998, when they went to the polls in large numbers Tuesday. The unofficial vote was 248 voting in favor of the dissolution plan for the district and 52 voting against the dissolution plan, or 83 percent for the issue. Over 40 percent of the eligible voters took part.

The Grand Valley Community school district dissolution vote was featured in a Des Moines Sunday Register story September 21. "School district awaits final bell" was the story by Mark Siebert which told of the final year for the elementary school in Kellerton and included several color and black and white pictures of the students in their final year.

Chip BRUNDAGE of Mount Ayr is starting defensive end for the Simpson Storm football team this year. The Storm had a pre-season ranking of fifth in NCAA Division III football.

Cherry tomatoes are growing in big clumps like grapes on a tomato vine that has shot up to over 18 1/2 feet tall at the home of Mary GARDNER of Mount Ayr. One cluster had 11 tomatoes and another had 13.

Place's Discount Store in Mount Ayr is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week. P.M. PLACE purchased the R.E. Maryland Variety Store in Mount Ayr in April 1947, the fourth store in Place's group of stores and Joe PLACE was the first manager.
