MACHS marching band members, Ron SCHAFER and Shonn MAPES, will be joining
240 members from over 50 schools in Southwest Iowa to perform at the Cotton Bowl parade in Dallas, TX on New Year's Day.
SCHAFER, a trombone player and son of John and Marilyn SCHAFER of Mount Ayr, and MAPES, a tuba player and son of Gail and
Cyndi MAPES of Mount Ayr, are both freshmen. They are students of Mr. Marty ALDRICH, who will accompany the young
musicians to Dallas.
At the Ringgold county ASC convention held Friday, Dec. 12, Theron JOHNSON of Mount Ayr was elected
to a three-year term to the Ringgold County ASC committee. JOHNSON was a member of the Rice township community committee.
He operates a grain and livestock farm about two miles southeast of Delphos. He will be filling the place of the
committee formerly held by Marion CREVELING of Ellston.
U.S. Republican Senator Charles GRASSLEY visited the Mount
Ayr Community high school. Students in government and social studies classes heard the senator speak and answer
questions they had prepared for him.
Two Ringgold county students are among those studying in
the electronics technology program at Southwestern Community College in Creston. The program provides graduates with the
basic skills and knowledge required to assist in the development, installation and maintenance of electronics
equipment. Eugene WAUGH of Mount Ayr and Tim MINNICK of Kellerton are building
and testing a sample computer as part of the course work.
Marion CREVELING of Ellston was presented as ASCS award
for 18 years of service at the annual ASCS Christmas dinner held at Small Corral on Saturday, Dec. 12. CREVELING has
been a community committeeman, a field reporter, a commodity inspector and since 1979, a member of the county ASCS
committee.
Guests of honor Friday night at a pow wow banquet given by Archer Petroleum of Omaha, NE was Ringgold county
manager George HOSFIELD and his wife, Naomi.
The Ringgold County Soil Conservation District presented the district's
conservation achievement award to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth SMITH at the annual awards meeting December 1. The SMITHS own
160 acres in Clinton township. They also farm in partnership with his parents, Paul and Frances SMITH. They have a cow
herd of 100 purebred Angus and farrow and finish 600 hogs a year. The SMITHS' conservation practices include contouring,
crop rotation, no-till farming, terracing and grade stabilization structures.
