Ricky Lynn JOHNSON, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill JOHNSON of Benton, was fatally injured yesterday afternoon
about 1 p.m. when he fell from a car onto the highway, on-half mile east of the Benton corner. Ricky Lynn was en route
to Mount Ayr from Benton in a car driven by his mother, when the accident happened. The boy was riding in the back seat
of the car when the door came open and he fell and struck his head on the pavement. He was brought to the Ringgold
County Hospital in the RHOADES ambulance, but was dead upon arrival.
For outstanding achievement of keeping 4-H record books during the 1960 club year, Lucille FARIS and Jerry BARKER
of Mount Ayr have been named by the county 4-H committee as winners of trophies presented annually by the
Mount Ayr Lions Club. Lucille, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur FARIS, is a member of the Gay Farmerettes 4-H Club. The son of
Mr. and Mrs. Marshall BARKER, Jerry is affiliated with the Benton Bearcats.
Neighbors and friends went Saturday to the Grover BEDIER farm in Union Township and picked corn for Mrs. BEDIER and family.
Final population figures for Ringgold County, which have been announced by the U. S. Department of Commerce, show that
the county gained 69 over the preliminary figures issued in May. The official total is now 7,190. Mount Ayr's population
is now officially 1,738, a gain of 10 over the preliminary figures. Totals for Beaconsfield, Benton, Delphos and Maloy
remain unchanaged. From the early report Diagonal lost 28, Ellston gained four, Kellerton gained one, Mount Ayr
gained 10, Redding gained one and Tingley gained five. Rural areas gained 55. The total rural population is now 4,594.
An ice skating rink is being developed at the Lions Club park north of Mount Ayr through cooperation of the Lions Club,
the Mount Ayr Park Board and the county engineer's office, according to a report made by Mr. RUBEK. Elevations have been
taken, a dike developed and the area is being graded so it can be flooded to a depth of six to eight inches.
