RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 22, 1960

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

An approximated 6,500 persons attended the sixth annual Ridiculous Days activities Saturday in Mount Ayr, heard Iowa's Governor Herschel C. LOVELESS speak, witnessed an outstanding parade and availed themselves of hundreds of bargains offered by merchants. Spectators lined the square and many side streets to watch the parade, one of the largest and best since the county observed its centennial in 1955.

The Tingley Home and Garden Club held its annual flower show Tuesday afternoon in the Legion Hall. The 156 entries of beautiful arrangements, single flowers and houseplants were judged by Mrs. John YOUNG of Afton. Mrs. Cora WEIGEL of Ellston and Mrs. Charles MILLER received the most blue ribbons on their entries, and Mrs. Julia HENDERSON and Mrs. LeGrande MILLER ranked second.

Three of four Mount Ayr teenagers -- Dorothy KIBBE, Ula Agnes TROWER and John WORTHINGTON -- were injured Saturday night in a two-car accident within the city limits. The fourth occupant, Lyndon HACKER, escaped injury. The accident happened about 10:30 p.m. at an intersection of Monroe and Hayes Streets in east Mount Ayr. WORTHINGTON was driving east when his 1960 Ford was struck at the intersection by a 1953 Oldsmobile, driven at a high rate of speed by HACKER, who had run a stop sign.

Norman KLEJCH was elected president of the board of education of the Mount Ayr Community school district. The oath of office was administered by Mrs. Pearl BEATH, secretary, to Loren IBBOTSON and Milton HENDERSON, who were re-elected September 12 as member of the board, and to Chas. A. HETZEL, treasurer.

Fourteen persons from Ringgold county enjoyed a luncheon Friday at Berning's Cafe in Creston and afterwards joined a caravan to Guthrie Center to hear Vice-President Richard M. NIXON deliver a major address at the state plowing match.

Dale BICKEL, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. BICKEL and a senior in the Mount Ayr Community High School, won the State Soil Conservation public speaking contest held Sunday in Diagonal. His speech was entitled "How Soil Conservation Affects My Future."
