An approximated 6,500 persons attended the sixth annual Ridiculous Days activities Saturday in Mount Ayr, heard
Iowa's Governor Herschel C. LOVELESS speak, witnessed an outstanding parade and availed themselves of hundreds of
bargains offered by merchants. Spectators lined the square and many side streets to watch the parade, one of the
largest and best since the county observed its centennial in 1955.
The Tingley Home and Garden Club held its annual flower show Tuesday afternoon in the Legion Hall. The 156 entries
of beautiful arrangements, single flowers and houseplants were judged by Mrs. John YOUNG of Afton. Mrs. Cora
WEIGEL of Ellston and Mrs. Charles MILLER received the most blue ribbons on their entries, and Mrs. Julia
HENDERSON and Mrs. LeGrande MILLER ranked second.
Three of four Mount Ayr teenagers -- Dorothy KIBBE, Ula Agnes TROWER and John WORTHINGTON -- were injured Saturday
night in a two-car accident within the city limits. The fourth occupant, Lyndon HACKER, escaped injury. The
accident happened about 10:30 p.m. at an intersection of Monroe and Hayes Streets in east Mount Ayr. WORTHINGTON
was driving east when his 1960 Ford was struck at the intersection by a 1953 Oldsmobile, driven at a high rate of
speed by HACKER, who had run a stop sign.
Norman KLEJCH was elected president of the board of education of the Mount Ayr Community school district. The
oath of office was administered by Mrs. Pearl BEATH, secretary, to Loren IBBOTSON and Milton HENDERSON, who were re-elected
September 12 as member of the board, and to Chas. A. HETZEL, treasurer.
Fourteen persons from Ringgold county enjoyed a luncheon Friday at Berning's Cafe in Creston and afterwards joined a
caravan to Guthrie Center to hear Vice-President Richard M. NIXON deliver a major address at the state plowing match.
Dale BICKEL, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. BICKEL and a senior in the Mount Ayr Community High School, won the
State Soil Conservation public speaking contest held Sunday in Diagonal. His speech was entitled "How Soil
Conservation Affects My Future."
