RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, January 22, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

A rural Hatfield man was killed and his son injured in an electrical farm accident at the farm 12 miles south of Mount Ayr Tuesday, Jan. 13. Bill WASHBURN, 68, died of what Ringgold county medical examiner Dr. Duane MITCHELL ruled as an accidental electrocution. According to a spokesman for Grundy Electric Cooperative of Trenton, MO, the accident happened when electricity from a 7200 volt main line came down through the auger. Joe WASHBURN tried to revive his father, who was transported to Ringgold County Hospital by the Eagleville ambulance crew. WASHBURN was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The accident happened as the two men were positioning an auger to unload grain from a grain drying bin on the farm. Both men were knocked to the ground with the shock.

Joe WASHBURN was treated at Ringgold County Hospital and released Thursday.

The Ringgold County Ministerial Association and the Ringgold County Hospital cooperated in making available to hospital patients an emergency chaplain service. This will involve members of the RCMA being on call in case of emergency. The chaplain assigned will respond, evaluate the situation and notify the pastor chosen by the patient and/or his family.

Mount Ayr's "front door will be beautified this summer when highway work is done through the city on Highway 2. As part of the project to widen and resurface the highway through town, some of the ditches along the highway will be worked on as efforts are made to widen the shoulders. In addition, the community will have its first "four lane" stretch of highway -- part of the change in the intersection of Highways 2 and 169 in the east part of Mount Ayr."

Members of the Mount Ayr Resource Commission (MARC) welcomed Mount Ayr Foods to the community Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony during the grocery store's grand opening.
