A screech owl was nursed back to health in Mount Ayr this week after it flew into a car driven by Tom KINTON
near the Loren WINEMILLER farm. KINTON took the injured bird to Ringgold County Conservation executive officer
Rick HAWKINS, who shared the owl with elementary school classes during the week as it recovered from the crash
and damage to its beak. The owl was released back in the wild early this week.
Ringgold county will be invaded by thousands of bicycle riders Wednesday, July 29, when the bicycling hordes of
the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa IX cycle throught the county. The ride through Ringgold county
will be part of a day's ride between Greenfield and Leon that will cover 95 miles, the longest section for the riders.
All three defendants in the murder of Mount Ayr school teacher Alberta MICKAEL will stand trial together in
Winterset beginning June 22, according to official notification of rulings on motions in the cases received
Tuesday morning by Ringgold county clerk of court Rollin NOBLE. Judge Robert O. FREDERICK of Winterset made rulings
in a number of motions in the information received including moving the criminal cases against Ronnie D. TODD,
Harold TODD and Charles Loyd TYLER to Madison County where the trial will be held in Winterset.
Toxic fumes in a corn silo caused Chuck KLEJCH, 22, of Diagonal, to lose consciousness and narrlowly escape death
as he was working in the Elton WERNER farm eight and one-half miles northwest of Mount Ayr at 8:40 a.m. March 11.
Quick action by Jim WERNER of Diagonal brought KLEJCH out of the silo into fresh air. The Mount Ayr volunteer
fire department rescue unit had been called and they administered oxygen and gave resucitation. KLEJCH was rushed
to the Ringgold County Hospital where he remained a patient for three days. He has now been released. Evidently
it took WERNER two tries before he was able to get KLEJCH out without himself losing consciousness. When KLEJCH
was removed from the silo, he was given mouth to mouth resucitation and other aid by WERNER and his mother,
Marjorie WERNER. Mrs. WERNER had received cardiac pulmonary resucitation training in connection with being
certified as a nurse's aid.
