New street markers enhance the appearance of Mount Ayr. The four-way signs, installed last week, are white with a dark
blue background. The 256 name plates and 128 supporting 10-foot lengths of gas pipe were purchased from Iowa Industries,
Inc. (Reformatory for Men), Anamosa, at $9.30 per unit for a total of $1,190.40.
Franklin S. MAIN, Democrat candidate for the state senate from Ringgold, Union and Decatur counties, has been appointed
chairman of the agriculture subcommittee of the pre-platform committee of the state Democrat organization.
A European vacation for two has been won by Jim SMITH, owner of SMITH'S Motor in Mount Ayr, in a nationwide contest for
Rambler dealers sponsored by the American Motors Sales Corporation.
An option was obtained last week for the purchase of a swimming pool and park site, if the bond issue to be voted upon
carries. A plot of ground, which contains approximately 18 acres with frontage on Ringgold Street, Highway Nos. 169 and 2
and a county road, has been secured. This land belongs to Mrs. Mae STANLEY and can be purchased later for the sum of
$7,600. The engineering firm hired by the swimming pool committee is at work making the preliminary report and it won't
belong until definite specifications, etc., will be available.
Wm. S. BRECKENRIDGE of Tingley suffered cuts above his right eye, bruises and minor injuries Sunday morning about 10:30
a.m., when his car went out of control and struck an embankment three miles south of Afton on Highway 169. Mr.
BRECKENRIDGE was en route to his home after playing golf in Creston, when his car, a DeSoto, hit a soft shoulder,
careened across the pavement and struck the embankment.
A severe grasshopper infestation is plaguing Ringgold county, says J. N. CHICKEN, county extension director. Several
species ranging from one-fourth to one-half inches long are being found in great abundance in alfalfa and clover fields,
along roadside fence rows and ditch banks. They seem to be especially attracted to alfalfa and red clover, soybeans and
corn.
