Estimates reached as high as 2,500 people swelling the ranks of the 35 every day residents of Maloy as the community
southwest of Mount Ayr celebrated its 100th birthday Saturday and Sunday.
Five high school students from Mount Ayr recently attended Northwest Missouri State University's Summer Music Camp '76.
More than 250 outstanding high school vocal and instrumental musicians attended the popular summer camp of music and
recreation. Participating were Shaun HAYSE, Anne ROTERT, Sean THOMAS, Nicki BURGHER and Jeremy CULBERTSON.
Fire June 12 at Maloy caused burns around the face, hair and arms to Sherry OVERHOLSERr and on the leg and hair of her
four-year-old daughter, Rachael. Another child, Ryan, who is almost two, had no reported injuries. Mount Ayr volunteer
firemen were called to the scene in late afternoon, Friday, where an explosion resulted in fire around the washing
machine area of the OVERHOLSER home. The Iowa firemarshal's office is investigating.
Three Ringgold County students interested in health care careers were named the recipients of scholarships from the
Ringgold County Hospital Auxiliary at a tea Monday afternoon. Marcia STAMPER of Mount Ayr, a junior nursing student at
Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines; Christy SOBOTKA of Diagonal, who plans to attend Jennie Edmunsen Hospital
School of Nursing in Council Bluffs this fall, and Becky MYERS of Mount Ayr, who will be attendingthe University of Iowa
to study in the physical therapy program. MYERS and SOBOTKA received $200 scholarships while STAMPER received a $100
scholarship renewal.
Ronald "Bud" TICE is opening an insurance and investments office just south of the Kellerton post office. He will handle
Princor Financial Services (formerly Banker's Life), Ringgold Mutual and Grinnell Mutual Insurance. TICE has four years
service as vice president and agriculture loan officer with Lamoni National Bank and 18 years with Okey-Vernon Bank in
Corning where he was vice president. TICE has been in Ringgold county for five years and resides on a farm five miles
south of Kellerton with his wife, Shirley. Their four children are all adults.
One of the games for youngsters at the Maloy Centennial over the weekend was the toilet paper toss. A toilet seat was
rigged up and participants had to send duct-taped rolls of paper through the seat to win prizes. No information was
available on whether the sport was popular enough to start professional competition yet.
Three Mount Ayr girls will be participating in the Iowa High School Rodeo Association's final in Albia Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, June 19-21. Shelly TAYLOR of Mount Ayr heads into the state finals with the highest point total in the barrel
racing. She has 87 points. TAYLOR also will be participating in the breakaway calf roping even, but is not currently
among the top five in the state in this event. Jill TAYLOR of Mount Ayr will be participant in the pole bending
competition. She currently ranks second in the state standings with 73 points. Also competing will be Krista SHAHA. She
competes in breakaway calf roping and cutting, but is not among the top five heading into the finals. The TAYLOR sisters
are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Steve TAYLOR of Mount Ayr and SHAHA is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kyle SHAHA of Mount
Ayr.
