Ringgold County Attorney Arlen HUGHES, 61, died suddenly Monday evening, January 15, at his home at 405
West Madison Street, Mount Ayr, after apparently suffering a cardiac arrest. Probably because of its suddenness,
news of the death of HUGHES was received with disbelief throughout Iowa and telephones at local places of
businesses and at the Ringgold County Courthouse, particulary at the sheriff's office, were ringing almost
nonstop with inquiries that would confirm what had happened.
The Ringgold County Soil and Water Conservation District met Jan. 2 and re-elected Lee FARIS of Mount Ayr as chair.
Vicki SICKELS was re-elected as vice-chair and Rebecca TAYLOR was re-named secretary-treasurer.
Ringgold County Sheriff Lyle MINNICK is among the 17 Iowa law enforcement officers who have volunteered to help
organize and supervise security as the 1996 Summer Olymics in Atlanta, GA. "This is the first time they have tried
having certified law enforcement officers as security personnel," according to Bill SAGE, Cass county chief deputy,
who is helping with the Iowa group.
A lawsuit charging Ringgold county with negligence in an accident in which two people were killed in January 1994 has
been filed in Ringgold County District Court. The suit is being filed by Leonard D. WITT, father of Matthew A. WITT,
who was injuried in the accident, and as administrator of the estate of Suzanne WHITT, one of two people killed when
their car went off a bridge and caught fire. The suit charges the county was negligent in the manner in which it
maintained the bridge and road about 6.2 miles northwest of Diagonal where the accident took place.
