The queen and princess of the Ringgold County Fair will be named this Sunday, July 20. Sandy WEEDA, last year's queen will crown one of 12 lucky candidates to begin her reign. This year's candidates are:

  • Karen TAYLOR, age 19, from Diagonal. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack TAYLOR.

  • Linda BARKER, age 17, from Benton. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan BARKER.

  • Robyn SMITH, age 18, from Mount Ayr. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert SMITH.

  • Shari ENGLAND, age 18, from Tingley. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim ENGLAND.

  • Liz SCHNOOR, age 18, from Mount Ayr. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger SCHNOOR.

  • Brenda WOOLLUMS, age 18, from Kellerton. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry WOOLLUMS.

  • Teri KRAMER, age 16, from Pratt, KS. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert KRAMER.

  • Tami KLOMMHAUS, age 17, from Mount Ayr. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry KLOMMHAUS.

  • Ellen JACKSON, age 18, from Ellston. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Junior JACKSON.

  • Hope HUMBARD, age 18, from Diagonal. She is the daugher of Mr. and Mrs. Louis LUMBARD.

  • Vita WEBB, age 18, from Kellerton. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sebern WEBB.

  • Mari HUGHES, age 18, from Mount Ayr. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arlen HUGHES.

    This year, there are six candidates competing for the princess title. They are:

  • Sara Watson, age four, from Diagonal. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jay WATSON.

  • Tara SMALL, age four, from Mount Ayr. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Steve SMALL.

  • Kemmie HEBENSPERGER, age six, from Mount Ayr. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth KEBENSPERGER.

  • Debbie SMITH, age five, from Beaconsfield. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jim SMITH.

  • Angelina TULL, age five, from Mount Ayr. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ivan TULL.

  • Elizabeth DOAN, age five, from Mount Ayr. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Tim DORAN.

    Royce DAVIS was presented a plaque in recognition of his 18 years of service as treasurer of the Mount Ayr Community school district at a board meeting Monday evening. DAVIS resigned from the position and Jack ELLIOTT was named treasurer for the new school year.

    Small Corral had its grand opening on Friday and Saturday, July 18-19.

    The Redding Frontier Days celebration, July 12-13, drew good crowds who braved hot weather to enjoy a parade, contests, horse races, a dance contest, a mud run, barbecue and dances.

    Ranked 13 in the state this week, Mount Ayr Community's Raiderette addes a win giving them the Tall Corn conference softball title again, then won one game and lost two in tournament action at the Waukee Invitational tournmanet over the weekend. The Raiderettes made it a clean sweep of Tall Corn conference foes last Tuesday, the seventh straight summer conference championship for the Mount Ayr girls. In the last 70 summer conference games, they have only one loss.

    Steve JOHNSON, Mount Ayr Community high school vocational agriculture instructor, was elected to the executive board of the Iowa Voc-Ag instructors. JOHNSON, who is beginning his third year as a voc-ag instructor, will serve a one-year term as state vice-president representing the South Central District of Iowa.

    Pharmacist Steve ROE is a new partner in Horne Rexall Pharmacy in Mount Ayr. ROE is the new partner of Les HICKMAN after buying the portion of the business formerly owned by Bill HAROVER. ROE, a 1975 graduate of the University of Iowa, interned at the local pharmacy before going to work for the Hartig Drug Co., in Dubuque. He most recently was the manager of the chain's Locust Street store in Dubuque. ROE is a Mount Ayr native, having graduated from Mount Ayr Community high school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob ROE of Mount Ayr. he and his wife, Nancy, a Diagonal native, have two children, Cody, three, and Brittany, 15 months.

    BIRTHS REPORTED FROM RINGGOLD COUNTY HOSPITAL:

  • July 09, a daughter to Tim and Susan DORAN. The baby's older sister is one of this year's princess candidates.
