A vote to sell the Tingley school building to the Tingley City Council was among items treated at the Mount Ayr Community School Board meeting Monday night.

H. Alan SMITH has joined the Record-News staff as news editor effective Monday, Jack TERRY, publisher, made the announcement. "We are glad to welcome Alan to our staff and feel fortunate to obtain an experienced newspaperman with his background and experience. He will cover the general run of news throughut the county as well as contact advertisers." TERRY said. SMITH comes to the Record-News from serving as general manager of Southern Iowa Newspapers Ltd. in Fremont, Iowa, a group of seven weekly newspapers. he also has served as news editor of the Red Oak Express in Red Oak.

A graduate of Graceland College in Lamoni, he received a master's degree in journalism and mass communication from Iowa State University. SMITH and his wife, Valle, have a son, Nathan, four, and a daughter, Erin, one, and live at 500 W. Adams in Mount Ayr. "We are very pleased to be part of the Mount Ayr community and look forward to the opportunity of working here," SMITH said.

Fire a a farm home three miles south of Diagonal about 2:45 a.m. April 9 destroyed an unoccupied two-story farm house. The house had been vacated several weeks before by Mel BROWN, who had moved to Diagonal. The flames were discovered by a passerby who went to a neighbor's and turned in the alarm which bright Diagonal volunteer firement to the scene. However, the house was totally involved when the firemen arrived, according to fire chief Ron SCHLAPIA. They were able to keep the fire from spreading to outbuildings.

Two young men escaped serious injury when they were pinned beneath the collasping roof of a shed they were tearing down Saturday, April 12. Chuck BENNETT of rural Mount Ayr and Buddy ALLEN of Diagonal were working on the project at the Charles BENNETT farm eight miles northeast of Mount Ayr when the accident happened.
