Soccoro WAUGH of Benton, a nurse at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, has been named the Iowa representative in a
national nursing "Search For Excellence" program sponsored by the American Nurses' Association. She will be one of 53
candidates from across the county from whom a top nurse of the year for the nation will be chosen. WAUGH, who has been
on the staff at Ringgold County Hospital for 30 years, was nominated by Kathleen SCHUSTER, director of nursing at the
hospital here.
Funeral services were held this week for a Clearfield teenager who died Saturday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Chad LARSON, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory LARSON, died about 7 a.m. Saturday at his home south of Clearfield.
A new Ringgold County pork queen for 1989 was crowned in a ceremony over the weekend. The 1988 pork queen Tracy
FORD passed the crown along to a new pork queen Jennifer STEPHENS. STEPHENS is a junior at Mount ayr community high
school and the daughter of Dennis and Donna STEPHENS of rural Mount Ayr.
A Mount Ayr farmer was among 55 soybean growers honored by Asgrow Seed Company recently. The program recognized growers
whose high yields with Asgrow soybeans made them winners in the 1988 Iowa Masters Soybean contest. Craig ELLIOTT of ELLIOTT
Farms received the award. ELLIOTT planted Asgrow A3127 and averaged 59.34 bushels per acre for first place in the
conservation tillage category on the district level.
Ron R. SHAFER, secretary/manager of the Ringgold Mutual Insurance Assocation and owner of SCHAFER Insurance Agency,
has been selected to speak to the Nebraska Association of Mutual Insurance Compnaies at the annual convention, March 28,
at Lincoln, NE.
Julia HENDERSON, a resident of Clearview Home, Mount Ayr, received a special award March 9 from the Salvation Army.
Ronald L. Tollerud, planned giving director of the Salvation Army, presented HENDERSON with the "outstanding friend of
Salvation Award." The award is one of less than 100 ever awarded in the western division of the organization. Tollerud
made the presentation for HENDERSON'S many years of supporting the Salvation Army.
Some of the top award winners at the annual Mount Ayr community FFA chapter banquet were star chapter farmer Lee MARTIN,
star chapter greenhand Russell HENSLEY and star agribusinessman Steve REEVE. REEVE also received the award for the
top senior record book and was named the chapter's most valuable member among other awards.
The Culver-Stockton Collee Concert Choir will sing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the start of the Kansas City Royals-Boston
Red Sox baseball game on April 8 at Royals Stadium in Kansas City, MO. Angela THOMAS, a sophomore and daughter of
Jane and Bob THOMAS of Mount Ayr, is a soprano in the choir, which will begin a European Tour on May 19.
