Six seniors and eight juniors of the Mount Ayr Community high school were initiated into Parnassus, the school's honor society, during a candlelight ceremony held Friday afteroon in the schoolhouse. New members were seniors Judy McGAHUEY, Mary BLACK, Patty RICE, Ed HOFFMAN, Carolyn DRAKE and Gay Lou FERGUSON. Junior members were Joe BOWEN, Dan CARR, Carol FEAR, Paul RUCKMAN, Nancy NICHOLS, Jim DENHART, Ruth PETERSEN and Kathryn McCREARY.

Members of the Mount Ayr chapter of Future Farmers of Amercia participated in district contest Saturday in Osceola and returned home with one gold, two silver and one bronze ratings. Dale BICKEL won a gold rating in public speaking. The chapter's treasurer's book kept by Edwin HOFFMAN, won a silver rating and the chapter's program demonstration team, composed of LeRoy CREES and Royce RINEHART, with Edwin HOFFMAN as projector operator, won a bronze rating. LeRoy CREES and Edwin HOFFMAN served as official voting delegates during the afternoon business meeting and Dale BICKEL responded to a request to give his winning speech during the business session.

A double-slat corn crib, containing 700 to 800 bushels of corn, was damaged by fire Sunday evening about 7 p.m. on the Ralph LONG farm in Washington township. The fire, caused by lightning, was discovered by a neightbor, George STILL. Some of the corn, on which Mr. LONG carried no insurance, can be salvaged, although it was extensively damanged by the water.

As an economy measure, two elementary schools in the Mount Ayr Community school district will be closed, effective at the close of the present school year. They are Beaconsfield in Monrow township and Delphos in Rice township. It is estimated by the board of education that the net savings will amount to more than $8,000.

Dan CUNNING was one of 88 Iowa State University, Ames, junior and senior men honored Thursday at the Cardinal Key Leadership Banquet. The junior and senior men were honored on the basis of their leadership, service to the university, character and scholarship. Dan is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. CUNNING of this city.
