Marilyn PEPPMEIER and Monte AKERS, juniors at the East Union Community and Grand Valley Community high schools, respectively,
have been adjudged winners in a written essay contest sponsored by Rideta Electric Cooperation, Inc. As winners, each will receive
an all-expense paid trip next month to Washington, D.C. with the Iowa Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Parents of the
winners are Mr. and Earl PEPPMEIER of Shannon City and Mr. and Mrs. Harold AKERS of Kellerton.
Twenty-eight seniors of the Grand Valley Community high school -- 11 more than last year -- will receive diplomas at
the commencement exercises to be held May 18, in Kellerton. They are Charlotte ADAMS, Gloria BADGEROW, Ted BEAR, Helen
BOLES, Irene BROWN, Rosemary BROWN, Dean BEEMER, Sue FOWLER, Jack GARRITY, Patsy GREENLAND, Lyle HARRIS, Nancy HARRIS,
Jerry HOWES, Bob HUNT, Ronald JIMMERSON, Alice MINTHORN, Daniel MOREN, Hazel O'DELL, Ann O'GRADY, Mary PETERSON, Deanna
PHIPPS, Nancy POWERS, David RAINEY, Darwin SNOOK, Ronald STARK, Gary TONEY, Jerry VANDERFLUGHT and Carol WEIGE (sic,
should be WEIGEL.)
The swimming pool in Lewis Park will officially open for the season on Memorial Day, May 30, according to an announcement
by Doyle THOMAS, pool manager. The pool was repainted last week and with the heater installed last season in operation,
the water should be maintained at a temperature acceptable to young and old alike, and swimming lessons given throughout the
day and evening will be made more enjoyable.
Four members of the Mount Ayr Junior Chamber of Commerce -- Bob EVANS, president, and Don NARIGON, Billie KELLEY and
Lary DVORSKY, officers -- attended the state Jaycees convention held recently in Des Moines.
Hospital Day will be observed Sunday, May 17, at the Ringgold County Hospital. Open house will be held from 2 to 4
p.m., arrangements for which are being made by Mrs. David IRVING, chairman of the Gray Ladies.
Mrs. Robert BECK, chairman of the Ringgold County Extension Family Living Committee, was honored Thursday as the
county's "Rural Homemaker of the Year" by the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, annual sponsor of the event. Mrs. BECK
was accompanied to Omaha, NE by homemakers from Taylor, Union, and Adams Counties and Mrs. Helen STREEBIN, Ringgold
County Extension home economist.
Mary Lou MULLENAX, daughter of Mrs. Roy MULLENAX and the late Mr. MULLENAX, was elected worthy advisor of Mount Ayr
Assembly No. 160 Order of the Rainbow for Girls, at the state meeting of the assembly held Monday night. Other officers
elected were Cathy REYNOLDS, worthy associate advisor; Cherri MITCHELL, Charity; June MERCER, Hope; Doris ANGUS, Faith;
and Lynda MAIN, treasurer. Sharon LESAN will continue to serve as recorder.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Mount Ayr Community high school has been placed on the list of secondary schools approved
for the 1963-64 school year by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
The Mount Ayr Community high school Raiders marching band came within one point of received the only trophy given in
the Veishea Parade held Saturday in Ames.
