Representatives of county boards of education and county superintendents of Taylor, Adams, Fremont, Mills, Montgomery,
Ringgold and Page counties held a second meeting in Clarinda, December 5, and organized a regional study committee.
Officers elected were John WARIN, Maloy, Ringgold county, chairman; Jack R. CAMPBELL, Blockton, Taylor, vice chairman,
and Miss Esther HENSLEIGH, Clarinda, Page, secretary.
The Amos RYAN home, located four miles north of Mount Ayr on Highway
169, was damaged by fire about 1:30 Monday afternoon. The fire, believed to have started in a flue, was confined to the
kitchen, the damage to which has not been estimated. Other parts of the house were damaged by smoke. Members of the Mount
Ayr Fire Department and neighbors responded to the RYAN's call for assistance, and were responsible for bringing the
flames under control.
Richard W. GISH of Clinton was employed Saturday by the board of supervisors as engineer of Ringgold
county and he will assume his duties the first of January. Mr. GISH will succeed M. A. RUBEK, who died September 22, after
faithfully serving the county for 12 years.
The mercury dropped to 17 degrees below zero Tuesday night at Mount Ayr for
the lowest readng of the season, according to H. L. CORENLISON, local weather observer. The season's first major snow of
three inches was recorded Friday and again on Monday, blizzard-like conditions prevailed with another accumulation of
five inches of snow.
The Diagonal Maroonettes defeated the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes, 57 to 55, in a thrilling
overtime game Saturday night in Mount Ayr. It was the first defeat in four games for the local sextet.
