Donald GOOD, a 56-year-old pilot from St. Joseph, MO was injured on Saturday when his plane malfunctioned and crashed
into a field near Delphos. The plane was an antique 1947 four-passenger Bellanca that he had purchased at an air show
in Oshkosh, WI. He was flying it home to St. Joe when the plane began experiencingtechnical difficulties and GOOD tried
to land it in a field. The plane crashed into a small gathering of trees, went through a fence and finally came to a
halt along the shoulder of the road. A resident of Redding, Burl DILLENBURG, heard the commotion and came to
investigate, finding the plane and its pilot along the road. DILLENBURG gave GOOD a ride in his tractor to Ringgold
county hospital where the pilot was treated for lacerations, abrasions, bruises and a cracked vertibrae (sic) in his
back. Although the pilot survived, his place was not so fortunate; FFA investigators reported that the antique
plane was damaged beyond repair.
The street stock car races ended in disaster for three drivers on the first lap. Roger TODD of Maloy was just rounding his
fourth corner whenhe managed to flip his car. It landed upside-down on the hood of fellow Maloy resident Larry OVERHOLSER'S
car. A third driver, Jeff WHITE of Mount Ayr, swerved to miss the accident and ran into the wall, wiping out his radiator
and steering. Luckily, all three drivers were able to walk away from the crash unharmed.
Fire ravaged the Miracle Recreation Company plant on Friday night. The Mount Ayr Community Fire Department is still
investigating the cause of the fire which is, as of now, unknown. No one was injured in the blaze though there was
much damage. Materials such as plastic, fiberglass, and painting supplies were ruined, and the building sustained heat,
smoke and water damage and productions in the building ere halted until repairs can be made. The fire department
thought they had the flare under control but had to come back at 2 a.m. to extinguish a fire that had caught on the
eastern part of the building due to heat that was still trapped inside. It took two hours to put out this second
outbreak of flames which damaged still more supplies.
