Twelve students who represent 20% of the senior class of the Mount Ayr Community high school scholastically will be entertained the evening of April 19 at the annual scholarship dinner sponsored by the Mount Ayr A.A.U.W. Those students are Charles LONG, Merylin PAIST, Paul HANSEN, Marilyn SHIELDS, Karen PAYNE, Dale WALTERS, Barbara BARKER, Betty BRAND, Janetta SALTZMAN, Karen RICKER, Garry WION, and Sharon FORCE.

Members of the Mount Ayr chapter of Future Farmers of America made an outstanding records at the state F.F.A. contests and convention held Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids. Their accomplishments included a nomination for the American Farmer Degreee, two Iowa Farmer degrees and two gold and one silver ratings. Melvin GRAY, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. GRAY, received the Iowa nomination for the American Farmer degree. Two members, Eddie BROWN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claire BROWN, and Royce RINEHART, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claud RINEHART, received the two coveted Iowa Farmer degrees, the highest honor bestowed on an F.F.A. member by the Iowa Association of F.F.A.

Announcements of Candidacy

Thomas CANNY of Grant township announded his candidacy for member of the board of supervisors of Ringgold county, term commencing January 1961, subject to the decision of the Democrat voters at the primary election June 6. Mr. CANNY'S family consists of his wife, Zoe.

Maurice H. HANSON of Grant township announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for member of board of supervisors of Ringgold county, term commencing January 1962 (sic, 1961) at the primary election June 6.

Victor THOMPSON of Mount Ayr announced his candidacy for the office of sheriff of Ringgold county, subject to the decision of the Republican voters at the primary election on June 6. Mr. THOMPSON is married to the former Edith SAWYER, daughter of W. V. SAWYER. They have one daughter, Darlene (Mrs. Bob E. JONES), of Colorado Springs, CO.

Stewart V. ELLISON, Ringgold county farm owner and operation, announced his candidacy as a member of the Ringgold county board of supervisors for the term beginning January 1961, subject to the decision of the Republican voters at the primary election to be held June 6, 1960.

C. W. HORNE, of the HORNE Hardware, has purchased from Glen and Doris HUTCHINSON their business building, formerly occupied by the Mount Ayr Supply Store, on the north side of the square in Mount Ayr. Mr. HORNE and his employees moved the stock of hardware merchandise the first of the week from the I.O.O.F. building to the new location.

Connie SANDAGE, senior business student in the Mount Ayr Community high school, was one of the 500 students invited to participate in the annual FACIT Regional Invitation Typing Contest to be held April 30 in Kansas City, MO. She will be accompanied to Kansas City by Bernadine BASSETT, her typing instructor.

Mrs. Carl F. PETERSEN and Mrs. W. B. CUNNING were elected secretary and publicity chairman, respectively, and Eldon MAIN was re-elected treasurer of the Mount Ayr Community Council at the annual meeting of the organization. Mrs. PETERSEN and Mrs. CUNNING succeed Mrs. Rollin NOBLE and Mrs. Milton HENDERSON. Directors were named as follows: Royce DAVIS, Mrs. Lloyd ANGUS, Mrs. W. T. TIMBY, Arlen F. HUGHES, Rev. John LIPPINCOTT, M. A. RUBEK and Jim BURGE.

  • April 12, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Wesley FREEMYER, Mount Ayr
  • April 12, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Max L. MURDOCK, Grant City MO
